In this video I continue diagnosing a surging idle in my 1984 533i. The early 533i, 633csi and 733i have a separate idle control module or ICM located in the glove box above the ECU (engine control unit). These commonly fail or burn out causing irregular idle and running conditions when they can no longer send proper signal to the idle control valve.
The idle control valves also commonly fail or get dirty in these cars, requiring cleaning or replacement. In this video I show you the removal and installation of a fuel injection control unit to repair the surging idle once and for all. As it turns out, the circuit board on the original module was burnt and as a result not sending enough voltage to the idle valve. #e28 #e30 #ProgRama
The early cars share the 13411286134 Programa idle module and the 13411709898 idle control valve. These are also found on the 528e, 325e and 325es ETA models.

Thank you for posting this series. I have been working on the hunting idle on my 1986 528e for a while. I'm original owner and it now has 346,000 miles. Replacing the ICM proved to be the solution for me.

This video and your last video "Surging idle part 1" are incredibly well described. Thank you for taking the time to go through each little step and setup you did. I'm hunting down a surging idle issue as well. Only happens after driving the car. Upon startup, when the car is cold, the car doesn't have idle or surging idle issues.

Wow! I give you huge props for buying those wheels! These are the nicer ones the E24 and E23 used. The E28 metric wheels were a little plainer near the center-cap. For the E23, TRXs were a performance option from `84-on. I still say new TRXs were the best for avoiding hydroplaning. Still have the orig. radio from my 533i in a closet.

excellent and thorough video diagnosis! you are definitely helping me with my euro spec 1984 635csi (05.84 build date), which uses a different idle control valve. it is the earlier metal style. i'm still diagnosing, so my next step is to see if this euro motronic has the separate idle control computer. your videos are very helpful. thanks

Everyone hates on the TRX wheel but I love the factory look. I just had mine reconditioned to a factory finish and new Caps on my L7.

I agree with you James! I love how they look. In fact, this style TRX wheel is Forged (not cast like Chinese made BMW wheels today) and they came factory on the Euro e28 M5. At BMW Welt museum in Germany, the e28 M5 has these wheels on it! Eventually, after decades of people scrapping these TRX wheels due to expensive tires, they have become quite hard to find. Only downside is having to stomach the $1,200 it costs to purchase new Michelin TRX tires from Coker Tire.

Great video. I have same idle issue. When I tightened hoses, swapped temp switch, & ICV, it stopped hunting rpm up n down. It is now has high rpm n I adjusted ICV (you can adjust flat screw like plate), it brought down rpm slightly. Now it idles at 1000rpm. 150 more to go!

Thanks. Still having idle issue with mine. The hunting came back... sooo strange. Not sure what’s going on but is getting expensive! Car is in storage for the Connecticut winter. I’ll continue in April.

Hi Rich, Nice editing and the photo inserts were a big plus on this quality video! That VDO/ SIEMENS circuitry wouldn’t have been an easy remanufacturing process... not much left now to diagnose, think your right that it’s probably a vacuum leak. Cheers

Cheer Philip, thanks for watching. I agree with you, the $100 cost for the rebuilt computer was worth it as it took the least amount of my time. I've ordered a temperature sensor, throttle position sensor and fuel filter to continue ironing out the possible solution. Rich

ive had a surging idle issue on my early model e30 for the past year. I tried almost everything with no luck and i had no idea there was an idle box. im going to give this a shot and report back i have a feeling it may just be loose. It makes sense because the idle would sometimes fix it self when going over a bump or pothole.

You mentioned the voltage to the ICV was about half what it should be - what values were you seeing and what should it be?

Great video. Did you ever get it fixed? (saw the comment where it came back). I have a E23 that has this problem.. I do not have the module and I think I have a older type ICV with a screw to adjust idle. I tried looking for vacuum leaks and tested the TPS.. not sure how to fix this problem :I

Hi, yes I did get it resolved. BMW put black plastic idle control valves on these early cars. Even though it passed the bench tests, it was defective. I put in a 325e metal body idle control valve and it resolved the issue permanently. They're not cheap these days, but definitely try that next.

I'm going to buy a nice 83 BMW 533i which never had A/C. Do you know if anyone makes a complete kit? If not any suggestions? The seller recently put a 3.5 motor in it or maybe its a 3.4 .

Yes, the original black plastic idle control valve was faulty (despite passing the electrical tests). I replaced with a metal body valve from the 528e/325e and it solved the idle issue immediately.
