To me it comes down to "Do I find what I'm looking for", and usually with Bing the answer is no. It will point me in a general direction, but even if I enter very specific search terms they rarely come up with a very useful result in the top 3. They may have it on the first page, but by then I would already be reading the content had I been using Google. As you said in the video, this is due to Google being able to see not only what people really search for, but which result they end up clicking on. That result then gets weighted as better. This means if I search for "Lenovo System Update" on Bing (which I frequently do since that's the default search engine in the default browser on a newly installed computer), the first result is the Lenovo info page about System Update. Relevant, yes, but not what I was looking for. On Google, that's search result 2, since they know that people who search for Lenovo System Update generally want to download it. The download page is result 1.
@rct9992 жыл бұрын
You describe a good test case. Microsoft should have millions of these to test. But when I search for "Lenovo System Update" I actually do get the download page at #1!
@Lost-In-Blank3 жыл бұрын
Bing is my default, but I frequently use the shortcut I set up to search google. Why? (1) Bing doesn't have the *site=* parameter. (2) The ability to *specify date ranges* for searches is broken in Bing. For example, if something is big happened to someone, and I want to find articles about them from before the big event, I'll search for articles older than a month. Easy with custom search in Google, but custom search broken in Bing when using Chrome.
@StephenJoines3 жыл бұрын
This may seem odd, but I actually use both. Google is the main one, but thats only because I have an android phone so all searches done on one device sync with the others. But, as you pointed out with bing is it displays results better that I find easier to get what I am looking for. It is a good feature with bing as you get points to turn into a reward. As an Xbox user too I get points for playing games, buying games ... they even have a rewards page for answering a few questions etc. I turn this into free Xbox game pass (ultimate) OR even e-vouchers for shopping online. So, it may seem odd, but use both.

What I missed is some explanation about the business models of Google Search and Microsoft Bing. Do both of them offer people that their results get a better ranking if they pay?
@froodtube Жыл бұрын
Not sure on Bing. On Google, people can pay for rankings, but any paid item that comes up in the rankings will have the *ad* logos in the corners. Usually the 2 or three tops results you get will be flagged with *ad* and all the true results based purely on Google's algorithms not influenced by pay will start below that. So if you use Google, usually your best bet is to go to the first non *ad* result, but usually the ad results are very good too because they still get filtered by the search engine and people pay quite a bit for them.

Google has such extensive localisation of search results, it's amazing. many websites i look for come up at top of my google search but it's not in Bing. and it extends across everything else with bing- bing maps, bing voice search- both are horrible. bing maps still doesn't show up the building where i live in, although its visible in the satellite view. and the voice search, whether it be Cortana or swift key, or in-built windows voice recognition tool, or the dictation feature in OneNote all of them fail miserably to identify my English, when google does it correctly 99% of the time. Microsoft really needs to improve bing a lot more. and bring bing rewards to India, i mean come on! more than a billion people live here and with Covid leaving most of the population job less, penniless- you want your bing traffic to go up, we are the guys for the job. 😉. everyone wins! plus i bet it will help you a lot with localising your search results which google is so good at.

I noticed that if I am signed into Edge with my corporate office 365 account it shows my company’s name in the search window. Does this mean it tracks results related to what other users in the company search for?

I think because a lot of people using Google, that's made google have a lot feature rather than Bing. Because google has more data from user rather than Bing.

Fun fact: I was searching for internet providers to sign up as I was moving in to a new place. Turns out that Bing found a better deal that google couldn't find, for the same internet provider, same plan, same everything. I don't know know why that happened, but today I pay less just because I didn't used Google search
