If you're ever going to try this again my two suggestions are: Suet dumplings instead of the cornbread. These are a classic herby English accompaniment to stews. Mincemeat instead of the raspberry sauce. Mincemeat is actually a fruity mixture for mince pies but if you go back a century or two did actually used to be made with both fruit and meat. If you can find an old-school recipe, take the meat part out it should work with the meat layer on top.

Bit of a random UK tidbit! The show is completely wrong, this is not a shephards pie. In the North we have both a shephards and a cottage pie. A cottage pie is what Rachel and Babish made as it’s made with beef and beef stock whereas a shephards pie is lamb and lamb stock and obviously different herbs to compliment each meat. To serve you have the meat with mash potato on top, kinda like a two storey lasagna and to signify which is which you run your fork across the mash to create lines if it is cottage, to symbolise the thatched roof and leave it fluffy or fluff further if it’s shephards pie for the little sheepies! Totally useless bitta info for you foodies but thought I’d share ☺️

Yes! Thank you! Although, learnt something new about the potato design on top, never put the hatching together with a thatch roof. Very cute :)

This is an American centered video. In America, we call the beef version Shepard's pie. We don't eat a lot of lamb in the US, it's expensive, rare, and seen as fancy. I do happen to have some in my fridge right now, but I won't put it into pie. In America videos, we use American words for things. In British videos, use British words for things. A British pub in the US will probably serve beef in the their Shepards pie, as few people want to pay the extra money for lamb. But when I went to the UK, they served me lamb (roast, not pie) even when paid for with government money. Cultural difference.

Fun food fact: what Rachel put in her trifle isn't actually filling from a shepherd's pie. Shepherd's pie is traditionally made with lamb, hence shepherd. What Rachel made half of is a cottage pie, those are made with beef.

@raynemichelle29963 жыл бұрын
Originally shepherd's pie used any cheap ground meat, as a shepherd was poor. The insistence that it must be lamb because it is called shepherd's pie came much later as did the term cottage pie for the beef version. This is why really old American cookbooks say any ground meat. The recipe came to America long before the distinction was made in the UK and Ireland.
