During China's One Child Policy, if a family had a second child, they would have to pay amends in order for the child to have basic rights. Otherwise that child would be illegal. That child would not have the right to travel, work, anything. As the fee was a bit pricey for a lot of families, abortions were very common, some forced, some not forced. This went farther when you know how Chinese families worked at that time. To marry children to one and another, the family of the girl has to give a dote (money) to the family with the boy, which means that girls were more expensive and less wanted. At that time, telling the gender of the child became illegal, because when it was told it was a girl, they would ask for abortions, or find a way to loose the baby. That's a small part of it, I won't go into more details.

Yeah, babies were either aborted, or drowned, depending on whether they had a son or not... some kids just remained unregistered in the government and were hidden inside the house (basement, attic, secret hideaway). The government even went around and made sure there were no additional children in the house.... It is crazy, but you have to also understand how overpopulated they were, they didn't just have to half their population, but really make major cuts. Which is why it was around so many generations, and why the common knowledge of the poor living conditions, capsule hotel rooms, bad air, lots of factory workers.... they wen't from having 8 kids, to 1... it was tragic and drastic, but we can only learn from it, and thank the modern society for removing such a strict limit. I personally would like to have 2 kids, an equal replacement for me and my partner, 3 max... I was raised in a 3 family household, it's hard to juggle that many without a substanial career.

In China during One Child Policy, yes, many did kill or abandon their infants (mostly girls) because it was easier and cheaper to do that than find an adoption agency to take them. As far as I know, it was not the country, but they PARENTS, that made these decisions, but it was a prevelant issue. If the parents chose to keep their kids, they had to pay certain taxes and fines every year for each additional child, so really only well-off families did this. Extremely poor families would often abandon, kill, or put up for adoption (if they could manage it) their first child if it was a girl, because as adults girls become part of their husband's families and boys will take care of their parents as adults and inherit family names and possessions. I believe at one point, ultrasounds were outlawed as well, so that parents would not abort their first child if they found out it was a girl because there was a such a wide gap between male and female births in China. Sadly of course, this led to the infanticide and abandonment discussed earlier becoming more prevalent, as women were basically forced to have babies they did not want. Horribly vicious cycle. Very surprised Pig didn't know this! I remember talking/learning about it in my 9th grade Geography class. Unforgettable classroom discussion for me. That teacher was a real one for informing us about real-world happenings and being so open about the effects of it with teens.

the one child policy rarely meant the next hild being killed. abortions would happen but the children themselfs wouldn't usually get killed after birth, atleast not officially. what happened instead was that the parents would get punished by having to pay high fees and they could potentially lose their job and their medical insurance. in the worst case they could get sterilised, i think. and the children themselves, eventho they weren't killed, would hold a bad position in society. they would often not be allowed proper education and would be mistreated, often referred to as "black children" in a negative way. so, aborting or later on getting rid of a child would usually be the parents' choice to escape the negative results. also, "one child" usually meant "one birth", so dw twins wouldn't get any issues due to the law.

The one child policy often led to mothers being taken and forced to abort or children being killed after the fact. Both occurred. And to top it all off, baby girls were often abandoned because the parents wanted a boy to carry on the family name, which is why there is a gender crisis. China is missing something like 35 million women. Fun fact; since the 90s we've adopted 60,000 Chinese babies in America, and almost all of them are girls. Authoritarianism is freaking crazy. Particularly the communist flavor. No single ideology has killed so many people, worldwide, intentionally or otherwise, in such a short amount of time.
