The difference is those examples are mostly in survival situations of one kind or another. The bird has no concept of the fact that its evolved hunting technique causes pain for the fish it impales and eats, nor does it have much choice in the matter at any rate-it acts entirely on a deeply ingrained survival instinct. Humans are the only race currently known to willingly inflict suffering on members of their own populations purely because the idea of the other humans' suffering amuses them. There's some evidence to suggest there may also be some octopods that do likewise, but as yet, sadism hasn't been successfully isolated as the sole cause of the bahaviours in question. It's exactly like James Cameron put it: _"I don't see them fucking each-other over for a goddamn percentage."_

There are several animals that torture others for “fun”, not just humans. It’s not necessarily high intelligence that leads to it, just some higher degree of consciousness/self awareness. They tend to be on the spectrum in some way or other but the defining feature is some degree of sociopathy/a lack of empathy. There are quite a few serial killers who had shockingly low IQs and then there were those who had higher IQs, so their intellect isn’t what drives the urge to cause harm. The Christine Chubbuck thing was something I recognized almost immediately. Poor woman had a lot going on and was trapped in an era where getting help for your mental health was looked down upon, but she obviously needed the help of she felt the need to get her point across in such a graphic, horrific way. There was also a certain politician whose self-unaliving was aired (I know his name but I’m not going to say it here because it was super graphic). People have mixed feelings about him but it apparently came out that the accusations against him were false. He just knew he was going down and there was nothing he could do about it, so he didn’t want his family to suffer/be in debt because of the scandal he was being accused of, and what he did was allegedly the one way he could stop that. If that’s the case, that’s horrible. Corey Feldman’s mental health has been pretty bad and he’s made some pretty gnarly accusations about some people he worked with when he was younger. He seems to be doing better now, but it definitely messed him up and was probably the reason for some of the weirder shit he did in his career. But he advocates for these things now, because he doesn’t want his own son or any other kids to go thru what he went thru.

Chimpanzees definitely know how to torture, or at least they know instinctively how to cause pain to their own kind. There have been stories of chimps mauling other chimps and humans. During these attacks, they aim for the face, nose, ears, eyes, and fingers. This is because they know that if their victim somehow survives, they'll still have a horrible life since they've lost a lot of their important body parts.

I think acting like this kind of cruelty is just human nature only absolves awful people of guilt and any responsibility to be better. If cruelty is human nature, then they can just claim they "couldn't help it". In reality evil acts are a deliberate choice, just as acts of good are. People always can and always should be better, and many choose to be. Good on you for not letting those who choose cruelty decide your view on humanity when there is so much good and so many people who need the help of those who choose compassion.
@JetterM2 жыл бұрын
IMO, we hear about heinous human crimes the time. It's on the news, online, even in our real day-to-day lives. Of course, it's not as common as it seems, but having this constant exposure to it really makes human society seem extremely bleak and violent, at times. Of course, animals also do horrible things, but we don't really see it as often, or if we Do, it's explained away by nature or instinct. We don't typically look for deeper, psychological reasons when animals do things like that (Of course, we find reason for it, but it's often much simpler than the reasons we give to crimes committed by humans). Like, if a dog bites someone, you don't assume the dog is doing it out of 'cruelty'. It's probably just uncomfortable, or anxious usually, right? It's easier to understand. Even when animals kill, a majority of the species we know or are around often, are doing it for survival's sake. EDIT : I do think you're right, though. I wouldn't say I really care deeply for the entire human race but having empathy (or sympathy) for others is important. I just think it does make some sense why some people would look at humans as a whole and see them as incredibly violent.
@kolbayada49382 жыл бұрын
Media essentially glorified animals to the point that people see them as "nice" and "caring". Just ask people about hippos, for example. I'm willing to bet that majority of people either don't know how psychotic they are or learnt that only recently.

Granted there was a picture of it online so he figured it's good. The kid who was selling it lived an hour away and offered to overnight it. My buddy was kind of skeptical but he really wanted it it was dirt cheap. He agreed to wire the money bcuz the kid said he needed the money to even send it, he was broke or something like that. So my buddy did. 3 days later when the package came it was a cardboard box and on the top of it it said XBOX. It was heavy so he thought it was inside. The box was full of bags with stones in it and Styrofoam so it wouldn't make noise. So instead of buying an XBOX, he bought a box with an X on it. Moral of the story: Don't trust craigslist!
