my mom teached our cats a specific call that means "I have food/treats!" Our cats listen to the word and to the tone my mom says it in. Our cats literally jump up to run towards her when they hear her calling (she also teached them whistling means the same) Whenever she wantsd them home she calls them and usually they run up immediately. When we don't see one of the cats for a day or something my mom also calls. Usually it shows up, but when it doesn't we only then really get concerned So far they have always returned! Maybe teaching your cat something like this would be helpful for you!

My family and I went on a hike a few years ago and lost track of my brother who was like 15/16 at the time. All of us screamed ourselves hoarse and my sister and I were absolute messes in tears. We did find him and he had no idea anything was wrong. He never goes more than 5 feet away from us on trails now

The last story makes me wonder if the kid got kidnapped and 4 year later when the case seemed to have calmed down, the kidnapper dropped off the human remains and clothing in a random area near enough to the trail, but didn’t think about it enough? Maybe the shoes were covered in evidence or got lost and so they went out and bought a fresh pair of shoes and left them out there.

When I was around the age of 4, my parents took me up camping with my grand parents. One day, my dad and grandpa took me on a nature walk in the woods a little way away from the camp. At some point, we came across a huge meadow with tons of green plants and flowers and very tall grass. They're chatting and walking in a strait line through this meadow, but I'm off to the side a few feet checking out all the amazing flora and running around as excited kids are known to do. Within a split second, I'm no longer running in the meadow anymore; instead, I'm in some hole in the ground, hanging on to the lip of the hole with all the strength my tiny body could manage. It's dark aside from the light filtering in from the tall grass above and the lower half of my body is immersed in murky water. My feet aren't touching the bottom and I have no idea how deep this water is, and I can't swim. I start screaming at the top of my lungs for help, but it takes them a minute to notice that I'm gone and hear my faint cries coming from somewhere they can't see. So they're running around calling out for me, and I'm screaming for them and trying not to let go because I could very-well die if the water is deep enough. Eventually, they get close enough that they can start to tell what part of the meadow I'm in, but they don't see me at all (because I'm underground and the hole is surrounded by tall grass and other plants). They're yelling "Honey! Where are you!? I can't see you! Where are you!?" I tell them that I'm in a hole full of water and they need to hurry because my hands hurt and I can't hold on too much longer. It took what felt like ages of them tearing through the grass to try and find the hole, but eventually they were able to find me and pull me out of there. I was crying and shaking and totally soaked from my belly button down. It was scary then, but it's even more horrifying now that I think about it as an adult. If I hadn't managed to grab onto the lip of the hole on my way down, or if I hadn't managed to keep holding on, I could have possibly drowned before they even noticed that I wasn't anywhere in sight! And, while searchers may have been able to find the hole during a grid search, it wasn't all that big of an opening, but the cavern was a little bit wider from what I remember, so it could have been missed, or my body could have sunk and not come back up until days later! There was actually a chance of me becoming another kid that "mysteriously" disappeared! Seriously folks, keep your kids close and be aware out in the woods.

I got lost with some of my friends, we were trying to look for this spot where a huge tree fell over to make a fort, long story short, we ended up in a new county and finally got help after finding this doggy day care cabin in the middle of nowhere and we had to walk the road for a little over a mild or so. Trucks thought we just wanted them to honk, but we where honestly just trying to find someone to help us get back home. An older couple finally saw us walking the road spotting trucks and they helped us call my sister in norwalk. We were completely gone from everyone for about 4 hours. I still feel terrible for how my sister had felt when we all went missing. We didnt have phones, we were all poor kids looking for fun, but nature cant know if your lost nor to give you any help. Honestly if your a child, dont infuse your ego, you will more than likely get lost. Please stay safe, and always tell your parents where or which direction your going, especially if you dont have a phone to let your parents know if you need help or are afraid your lost.

Forests are one of my favorite things to explore in the morning, it’s such a beautiful time. But I would never in my life stay anytime NEAR the sun going down I can’t imagine losing yourself in the darkness of a forest, resources going down, direction completely out the window, praying you somehow find a street or anything close to real civilization. Never underestimate the forest. Disorientation can set in incredibly fast and spin you around real hard, I know this from personal experience of getting disoriented only a few hundred meters into a forest.

When I was like 12 years old, me and my family went hiking in Switzerland and at some point, my little brother decided to try and do a little shortcut by walking away from the path and straight up the hills. Yeah and suddenly he was gone, literally vanished. Like, we thought he'd just realize that it was too much work to climb up like this and return to us at some point but nope, he was just gone. So my family decided to split - my mother, me and my other brother were just going to keep walking the usual path while my father would try and find my brother by walking the direction he went; and we would meet up on top of the mountain (there's a platform up there, a small restaurant and a gondola and all that) and the whole way up there I was panicking because I was of course old enough to realize "oh shit, my brother might be lost forever". LUCKILY at some point during his short cut my brother found the path again where he met a very friendly couple who - thank god - actually realized he was lost (my brother was still trying to be cool and pretended he knew exactly what he was doing, so idk lol he couldve fooled them, that idiot) and accompanied him up the mountain where we all reunited. BTW You'd think you couldnt get lost on a mountain because "theres just one way up" but uh. If you ever were in the mountains yourself - theres usually more than just one hill top and mountains are often connected and if you have absolutely no clue, you could very well just walk the absolute wrong way. But forests? Bruh, I'm staying out of these. (sorry for bad english btw)

This reminds me of a weird case I remember I got really into spelling bees and my parents put on a documentary called spellbound which came out in 2002 so I got curious and researched the kids and one of them Named Ted brigham died… In a forest in 2007 and his cause of death was never released to the public Just saying this video reminded me of that case

I find national parks scary, especially when I was hiking as a kid once, and I swear to god I saw something stalking me so I ran back to my group at the summer camp and told them what I saw. I’ve never gone alone hiking since.

I think a lot of missing hiker cases, especially kids, can be attributed to mountain lions. They're stealth hunters and they can easily snatch a person in an instant.

Mountain Lions dont attack unless provoked and the clothes are intanct, the mountain lion would rip the clothes off, INCLUDING SHOES, its not mountain lions, as they rarely attack

For the second one he may have gotten a bad concussion when he fell left him in a delirious state and perhaps forgetting what he had in his bag. And thus him getting hypothermia and winding up naked 4 miles away. Additionally I know it may seem terrible but baby leashes people! Could have saved both thoose poor kids.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too. Got a head injury, was left confused and not fully there. It's very possible that he just started wandering off because he couldn't get his bearings, and like you said, forgot what he had and eventually hypothermia got the best of him.

I mostly just settle on "people underestimate the forest." It's no different than a person getting on a boat and sailing and getting lost, they underestimated the sea. I think people just forget themselves and think they got it all figured out and then it turns out they made a mistake. I never venture far into the woods, but even I have made the mistake of taking a different path and realizing that the path i was taking was not very good but going back would be difficult. Only reason I am not lost is because I don't venture far. So it was a tedious but a SMALL circle I had to make to get back to my usual trail. But if that were a BIG national park/state forest, that's practically a fatal mistake. You might need to make a bigger circle and if the sun sets, it's practically impossible.

When I was between 5 and 6 years old, I was lost during a practice fire drill from what I was told by my mother is that I had wandered off to the woods behind my school for a couple of minutes after we had gone outside to our school field. Thankfully some other kids saw me and told a teacher who had walked with me back to the school. Though I have little memory of what happened that day, watching hearing stories like this reminds me of how grateful I am I was seen and safely returned.

One summer my mother signed me up for a 2 week long outward bound program, now I'm sure it's exciting and fulfilling for those who seek it out for themselves but that was not my case at all. Anyway near the end of the trip, I was walking less than 1/4 mile back to our camp site and my light gave out. It was cloudy and in the middle of the woods so it was so completely dark that I could barely walk forward. Luckily my friend was close behind me so I wasn't stuck for long but those minutes stuck in the dark dragged. My theory for some of those disappearances is sinkholes. There are caves, old mines and underground streams and with the dense vegetation, you might not even notice one until you slip in

I’m so curious about these stories and love hearing details and theories of what might of happen. Although it is very sad how these poor kids and man ended up the way they did. Also idk if you knew this but a lot forest’s apparently have cave entrances all over America and they are apparently connected. Scientists speculated that’s why a lot of missing people in the woods are never found because they go to these caves when they are lost or hurt and never return.

She had cancer and went to Hawaii to a spritual community or so to speak. Her youngest kid was 4 and I guess one day the community was supposed to watch over the kid. There was a pool near by and the people watching him told him to stay away from the pool. P.s the 4 year olds parents didn't teach him no. I mean if you see a kid run back to who you assume is their parents/gaurdians you would think that means they're safe and being looked after. You wouldn't just assume that every kid you see isn't being properly watched after by the group they're with.

As sad as it is, a lot of the national parks cases can be chalked up to caregivers getting rid of people who are sometimes (wrongly) perceived as burdens: children, the disabled, elderly people, etc. Manslaughter is pretty easy to get away with in a national park. Just say you turned your head for one second and all of a sudden they “disappeared” off the side of a mountain. No questions asked and now you’re free to live the rest of your life off the hook for murder.

The big take away for me is that people need to be AWARE of the dangers they are in while in the wilderness & how quickly things can go wrong. Missing 411 framing the cases as more mysterious than they might actually be encourages discussions & helps to spread awareness of the dangers of the wilderness.

Cool, I love mystery/true crime stuff. Down for more of this. There are actually two more unsolved disappearances from GSMNP that happened relatively close is time to Dennis Martin. Trenny Gibson and Polly Melton both disappeared under similarly mysterious circumstances to Dennis, where the people they were with saw them, but after leaving their sight for just a few minutes, they vanished without a trace. There's a fourth unsolved disappearance from the park, Derek Lueking, but his disappearance is less "vanishing into thin air" like Dennis, Trenny, and Polly, and more likely foul play. He went on an impromptu trip to the park, bringing over $1000 worth of survival gear. His car was found abandoned, with all the gear still inside, and a note reading "Don't try to find me" National Parks in the US are fucking creepy.

My theory is someone saw the kid and the less experienced group, them not necessarily paying attention to the kid and in turn something happened which lead to him being taken (TW) The pants being turned inside out suggests them being taken off with force The clothes being in perfect condition suggests they where removed from him and the skull cap kinda gives me the feeling he was dismembered and hidden in pieces in separate locations Lastly the shoes, possibly, removed before hand and kept as a trophy to which was returned VERY recently after ether the perpetrator(S) a became spooked about getting caught or b the guilt became too much, chances are they where washed to remove DNA so that could also be why they looked clean Finally I also believe the actual group may have done something to it or at least someone in it due to the change in plan lack of care and the OH bring your kid with us please

This is gonna sound crazy but I’m such a naturalist that I’d love to be lost in the woods. I climb trees in my free time and if I got to the top of a really tall one I’d most likely be able to see for miles and I’d be outta there lmao. A tip that I think everyone should have when venturing out into the wilderness is that everyone should have some primitive survival experience because you’ll never know what will happen.
