Eurasian Jay collecting acorns and peanuts and caching them away in preparation for winter when it will remember where it had hidden a high proportion of them. Also a close up view of its habit of tossing peanuts.

Amazing, I didn't know they could cache and carry food like that. When I've seen a jay with an acorn I thought it was just carrying the one.

Thanks for this valuable information b, I have just had my first one arrive in my town garden south of Oxford after 18months daily feeding and watering the wild birds it . is a real surprise to see one of these that I thought was very rarely seen In gardens even though they are UK garden bird I guess . They remind me of a paler Magpie I'm pleased to now know I need to keep feeding peanuts and acorns from the large over hanging oak tree soon to keep them returning . I started in lockdown boredom from my usual hobbies not being able to do having never had interest in birds . However I enjoy it now as a younger mid 20s birder as I even feel guilty for not refilling food up daily incase they don't come back ! it turns into a labour of love and new thing to look forward to outside over the cold shorter winter days and a joy for me to look forward to more of the 16 or so different species I had visit often since I started beside the frequent hedgehog and the odd fox !

I just searched for this behaviour. We have 2 Jays visit the garden every day and although we put out loads of different bird food each day, we never used to put out whole peanuts. I always thought that little birds might choke on whole peanuts (although I don’t know why I thought that as I’m sure they are pretty sensible!) . Anyway, a month or so ago, we threw some nuts out for the squirrel and I noticed both the blackbirds and the Jay’s going straight for them so we do it every day now. This morning I saw the Jay doing exactly this and storing loads of nuts. I wondered if he might be stashing them somewhere. It was good to see him helping himself to a nice feed! Thank you for your video.

Thank you for this video showing the Eurasian Jay. I find those small blue/black check feathers in my garden many times but didn't realise which bird was visiting.
