I've always considered bird shot great for home defense, especially if you have a gun that has multiple choke choices. At 5 to 10 yards which is the typical hallway distance in the average home, bird shot is still clumped together and is gonna hit like a slug but won't over penetrate your wall or door. Plus if the intruder survives he'll have a permanent reminder not to mess with your house. The doctor will never get all the pellets out. Lol

@bubbigguns49523 жыл бұрын
Its kinda the other way around. Lots of people shoot buck shot at deer, & crap like #3 & #4 BS, & shoot too far! Way too far! And no matter how much testing you do patterns are no where near accurate as bullets or slugs. Animals get wounded & that's the reason. Lots do, & I see it, every year, run off & die slowly or live messed up in pain & making their life harder. People that cant shoot for crap think they have a way better chance of killing a large animal bc they have lots of small pellets. They need to go back to science class & also learn something about firearms & how to use them! I literally hear people say I have a 1 in 12 chance of killing a deer with OOB & that's ignorant as hell. Hellmaring some buckshot at any distance & lots of guns with fixed chokes are close range & spread like crazy, deff not made for long distance. Close range it works, that is what it's for! It is a problem here & it needs to be illegal in my home state too. Shoot slugs, practice with them, slugs are awesome & lethal!!! You practice & you can take that deer at 70,80, even a 100 yards with a slug; no problem! Try different brands some guns are picky. Especially 20ga, lots of different weights. This is not directly at you either, just putting the info here for those who don't know about it or may could benefit from it.

Not being personally involved, I can't swear to it, but I was always told buckshot was no longer allowed for deer hunting because too many people tried to shoot too far with buckshot - results being many wounded deer. Have you thought about trying the different buckshots and maybe big birdshot like bb,bbb ,t,@f. Any way there was a idea back in the 80's with some older deer dog hunters. That #1 @ #2 buck at closer range under 40 yds. Where more powerful than 00, @ 000. The idea is there smaller pellets but the overall weight of the payload was heavier than the bigger buckshot. There by making the smaller buckshot more powerful and better for shooting running deer.
@TROOPERfarcry3 жыл бұрын
They make these "buck-and-ball" loads. I have some from Cabela's ... "Rio", I think? It's one .625 lead ball along with 6 double-ought pellets. The idea being that you give up some pellets for close range shooting, and in exchange you get a big-ball that can functionally increase the range-of-engagement beyond what would normally make sense for buckshot. The Winchester PDX1 that I also have does the same thing: it's a slug with 3 pellets of double-ought on top of it. When I patterned it, it also made a triangle with one big hole in the middle. At longer ranges, you'd lose the benefit of those three pellets, but that slug would still be going on along nicely. I consider it to be ideal for a "if-I-had-one-gun" scenario, but the truth is that it isn't quite as good as 8-9 pellet double-ought ... nor as good as a slug .... but tries to split the difference.

I think buckshot is illegal in many states because it gets a bad rap because many hunters don't understand its limits. Buckshot is a 30-35 maybe 40 yard load with the right loads and choke, unfortunately a lot of hunters can't tell the difference between 35 yards and 70 yards and end up wounding deer with buckshot. Stay within that 35 to 40 yard limit and buckshot is very effective for deer hunting. A buddy I used to hunt with used to use nothing but buckshot and finally one season he quit using it because he was "sick of losing two or three deer every season" turns out he was one of those hunters that didn't understand Buckshot is for close range and would be taking shots at deer 60 or 70 plus yards away.

@3:10 - So getting hit with bird shot would seem to be much worse than almost Everyone pretends it would be. Bird shot gained some respect for defense. Less collateral or over penetration. Who would expect less from Buckshot or Slugs on clay? But with Buckshot even a novice has a better chance to hit while panicked.

Of course buck shot and slugs would obliterate the clay block. But birdshot demonstrated interesting results. I wonder what different size shot or different distances would be displayed on clay. Especially on larger clay blocks.

Know what the difference between low brass bird shot and buckshot is? If you get hit center mass with buckshot you are probably dead. If you get hit center mass with low brass birdshot you will WISH you were dead.

If you’re stuck using bird shot as home defense aim for the face and throat. I’ve never shot any humans in the face with it, but raccoons really don’t like it, and my guess is a human shot in the face would be pretty much out of the fight, or a follow-up shot out of the fight for sure.

This is why I laugh when people think the AR is the deadliest weapon and the mean assault rifle that kills allt of people in a quick way. Well I'm here to challenge someone with an AR but I get to bring a mag fed 12ga pump with a 32 round drum mag. Thats 33 shots of 9 projectiles each

At 20 yards thr 12 guage is deadly. Slugs and OO buck would stop any animal in North America at close range of 20 yards. Birdshot impressed me for home defense

Can you try taking a bird shot shell, cut the end off, put the shot and some crayons in one of your wife’s good pans (😅), melt the crayons with the shot and pour them back into the shell. I have done it before but never with clay. Kind of makes it a slug till it hits them fragments pretty bad. Would love to see the “block head” after that!

I think everyone underestimates the potential of bird shot at short ranges. I shot a wild goat with #9 bird shot out of a modified choke Browning A5 12 gauge. I made a head shot at about 25 yards and he dropped where he stood. That was over 50 years ago and I was dove hunting which is why I was using #9 Winchester Super Speed shot shells. The land owner wanted to get rid of the goats and I was happy to help.
