Great video! Also, just so you know, 22:43 in smb1 you don’t need to land on the exact pixel. There’s a 5 pixel window. If you land right on the top pixel of the block, then you can Wall jump, or if you collide with the wall up to 4 more pixels lower, the game will snap you up to the top of the block and you can still WJ. So 5 Y pixels in total.

The thing about speed running is that every “unbreakable barrier” eventually gets broken, either better gameplay or new strategies. I fully believe in the next 2-3 years speed runners will be approaching 10:39

Excluding category, sure. Some categories certainly hit hard walls though due to not allowing certain tricks and glitches. OoT is a great example thereof.
@TheGerkuman
@TheGerkuman 4 жыл бұрын
The closest TAS category to this does it in 10:24.340, but it almost certainly involves some time saves that are beyond the human limit. But clearly not all of them are. I think that there will be a barrier hit eventually, unless new techniques are found, but there's definitely room to beat this one.
@skyehoppers2
@skyehoppers2 4 жыл бұрын
Eventually sure, but 2-3 years is way too soon. This record was set almost two years ago already and nobody has made a serious attempt to beat it since. And getting to 10:39 will take several new records, each one bringing it down by a small amount. I'd say 10:39 is at least 5 years away at a minimum.

One category of SMB3 you missed in the beginning is my favorite version. All Castles. This category requires you to beat all the various castles and forts. This means you can't just rush the end of the world each time like Warpless requires, allowing for more variation as there are branching pathing options. Additionally it allows players to skip a lot of the extremely slow autoscrolling levels 100% requires.

Whats frustrating, and fascinating at the same time is seeing all these little tricks and moves my friends and I used to do in SMB3 almost thirty years ago in these speedruns. However we didn't have the insight nor the drive to try to string them together for speedruns. Speedrunning a game just wasn't on our minds back then. But sometimes when clearing a level we'd pull off one of these feats just to show off. Nowadays I'm lucky to be able to even beat a NES game. Just don't have the quickness or preciseness I used to.

Exactly, I remember sometimes accidentally clipping through a wall thinking it was a mistake, now it's done intentionally to basically skip through the level......

Yet another incredible video. You deserve so many more subscribers and views. Just wanted to say you have been a massive inspiration for me; I recently dropped my first “Speedrun explained” video, very much like your ones, after 5 months of hard work. It’s not nearly as excellent as yours, but you’ll see it was heavily inspired in terms of the visuals and diagrams etc. and I can’t wait to make more. Keep it up and thanks so much! :)

Why do speed runners pick a game that has such heavy rng? Being on world record pace only to get screwed by the hand seems super frustrating.

This run involved extremely little RNG. It just seems like it because the run is so incredibly optimized. At some point, almost every game gets optimized to the point where even a few frames of RNG-based time loss become unacceptable.

1:8 chance of being grabbed and 2 times ~1:5 for the walljumps to work, that's a 0.5% chance altogether just to have a shot... every 200th try! Imagine to have spent hundreds of hours to master the speedrun beta and then having to deal with that kind of RNG. That's some crazy dedication right there.

Interesting, I remember hearing someone mention game quality testing being done with a broken controller that allowed left, right, up and down to be held at the same time to see how games handled it or if they'd crash.
