Pricewise, Ariya is a direct competitor to RWD EV6, not to Niro EV. At least in Finland. A great video, you just forgot to promote one very necessary improvement vs. the old Niro: This new one preheats the battery when navigating to a fastcharger. Major improvement for Nordic drivers, especially as the optimal charging curve is rather mediocre. Cold coldgating battery is a true annoyance in the old e-Niro. A small improvement that is major at least to me.

Vehicle-to-load is a big feature for me, something I’ll be looking for in my next car. The MEB cars don’t have it, and I haven’t heard about the Ariya having it. It’s a big deal. That’s a huge upgrade for the new Niro EV for me, so to call it un-upgraded isn’t fair IMO. It’s not an important feature for everyone, but for some of us it is.

The MEB cars have just added a VtL VtG in software update (ID software version 3.5), it’s currently rolled out on the facelifted 2023 models. It is limited in meantime to about a couple thousand kWh, I believe to preserve battery.

One thing to consider is that with better efficiency, you may not need to stop and charge & in the UK that is now very expensive. So a long journey, with great efficiency means a much cheaper cost to recharge back home 👍

Also the Ariya may be better but it starts at £46,000 compared to £35,000 for a Niro EV. That is a massive price difference, could just get a Tesla model 3 instead!

Why is Bjorn negatively slating the Niro EV? The comparison with the Ariya is strange when the latter car - 63kWh Evolve - is £7k more expensive than the top of the range Niro EV in the UK and similar in non-Norway markets. Ariya has 11-13% higher consumption according to Bjorn’s range tests. It has a range of between 171 and 252 km at 90 and 120km/h respectively. The Niro EV has 288 or 416 km range from Bjorn’s tests at the same speeds. The Niro EV is significantly lighter, improving the handling and the performance. In spite of a lower charging speed it was only 5 minutes slower than the Ariya on the 1000km challenge; though I take issue with the frequency of Bjorn’s Niro EV charging stops with these consumption values. These are some of the reasons that the Niro EV will continue to outsell it’s competitors. The reason that Kia has not made more significant changes is because the existing car works well. And most owners only rely on public charging for occasional long journeys. Most homes can only provide a 32A AC charger, c. 7kW, so this is a levelling factor in many purchase/lease decisions.

Hi Bjorn, thanks very much for this summary. You have driven so many cars so your more experienced than most so your opinion is awesome. For me I purchased the Niro and agree with most things you said. The Ariya is somewhat more expensive in Ireland. The base Ariya in Ireland is 55k euro more expensive than the EV6. The top trim Niro is 45200 euro (what I paid). But everything you said is correct. It got a design update but everything else is pretty much the same and that's disappointing. However i do love the car and delighted with my purchase. Charging in Ireland is no where near Norway so 50Kw is standard here. So again thanks for your video. Been waiting on it for months 🤣

I think that about sums up how I feel about the new Niro. For a first time EV it's a great value purchase, but I feel like it's a bit disappointing for older Niro owners, especially since the price hasn't gotten any cheaper vs. the previous model and it doesn't offer any more range either. Other brands are quickly catching up so I'm worried that the 75 ish kw max charge won't be enough to compete in the near future. The interior is quite a bit nicer than the outgoing model though and if it's anything like the old E-Niro it's rather nice to drive as well. 45k for a fully equipped Niro is good value though, because they come very well specced.

Hi Ml, I've a 21 Eniro & am considering upgrading to a new one. The only thing I find with the Eniro is a bit of road noise & the seats could be better,otherwise a great car. I suppose what I'm asking is would you buy the new Niro again. Mine has 40k kms on it & judging by done deal I might get close to 40k...so it wouldn't be mental money for 2 yrs. Tks in advance, Joe
@MichaelDoran23
@MichaelDoran23 2 жыл бұрын
@@Joe-ud2hb that decision would ultimately be urs. In my opinion the new Niro is a great car. We are missing a few small things that the British 4 got like Sunroof, memory seats, side sensors and the self park feature. But we got the heat pump and that has a more practical use. Overall the cars are very similar and if your happy with the existing car I wouldn't upgrade. But if you don't mind the extra few euro to spend every month then go for it. For me I had a choice of it and a used EV6 Earth. I love the heads up display and the ventilated seats which the EV6 didn't have. Delighted with my purchase. ENIRO or NIRO EV, I think you would be happy either way. But remember you won't likely get one til next year and by then more choices of evs will be out and a better opinion could become available.
@MichaelDoran23
@MichaelDoran23 2 жыл бұрын
@@DerpotronGames agreed. I plan to keep an eye on the used market and the battery market. When both meet me in the middle I might upgrade again. NIRO EV will be mine for the next 3 years in my opinion. Range on the Niro is quite good and which a full charge you can practically get anywhere in Ireland. I can get from Donegal to Belfast and back on a single charge so charging isn't too much of an issue for me yet. I can also do Donegal to Dublin and back to Monaghan where I stop for about 15min to charge to get back home.

In my opinion, Kia unintentionally made it hard for them selfs years ago with the Kia e-Niro (Niro EV gen 1?). They made the e-Niro so good compared to the competetion at the time. To an attractive price. This made the e-Niro (and in may aspects also the Kona Electric) at the time really superior to many of its competiors, even with models yet to be launched. To make my standpoint clear, the e-Niro have 200hp with 400nm, 64kWh _NET_ capacity, heat pump (in my market, this differs from other markets), a full blown TMS (looking at Nissan Leaf...), good aero, camper mode, resonable charging speed and good praticality. Was it perfect, no. But it was a good car, that many already knew from earlier iterations of Niro (HEV, PHEV). Most countries outside US could not get the Tesla Model 3 at that time. Fast forward to MY2023: Now we have more Kia EVs, and closest new one is EV6. From Kias perspective, Niro EV gen 2 cannot compete with EV6. Kia have to make the Niro EV gen 2 "less refined" than EV6, not to have customers go for a cheaper Niro EV. If I guess freely, this is the reason why the Niro EV gen 2 is NOT getting much better sound isolation (that EV6 has), NOT getting better charging speed (peak around 84kW), and NOT getting bigger battery (do not count 0,8kWh as bigger, sorry) and NOT getting AWD, ONLY 750kg on tow hitch (in our market, only MY21+MY22 could have tow hitch at all, and then only 300kg). Also, the Niro EV gen2 is slower (engine torque is reduced to 255nm from previous 400nm). Kias official statement to this is to reduce tire wear. Kia could simply not make the Niro EV gen 2 too good, or it would impede with sales of EV6. Most likely is this the last Niro EV (to be replaced by EV4 or simililar size car). As an owner of both e-Niro (MY19) and Kia EV6 (MY22), I can really tell that Kia made much improvements to quality and premium feel of the EV6. Havn't been able to drive the Niro EV gen 2 yet (just sat in one), but I can tell the quality/premium feel is not really there. Is Niro EV gen 2 a bad car? By any stretch, NO. It's a great car. The "problem" is that Kia made the e-Niro (Niro EV gen 1) so good, it even competes with cars released in 2022/2023. So Kia have to make the Niro EV "fairly good", not "great good". Please note that all above is my thoughs and opinions.

Here in California, the base price of the Niro EV has been very close to the base EV6. The Kona is much less expensive. It feels like this Niro EV redesign should have also come with a lower price to make sense versus the competition, as you summarize, and within their own lineup. Maybe that's still going to happen, but they figure they can make that money as long as there's a waiting list.
@FHB71
@FHB71 2 жыл бұрын
Just a remark: you may not want to compare the Niro to the Kona, since the Kona is in a lower segment. A few years back the Niro was the equivalent to the classic Ioniq which again was a segment above the Kona.

I think the Ariya is a bad comparison, in the UK the base model is £46 where the Niro EV starts at about £37k, maybe a better alternative would be the EV6, the base EV6 is cheaper than the entry level Aria at £45k and has a bigger battery! I'm biased as have a Niro EV on order, but better comparisons would be the VW ID3 that cannot be ordered at present in top spec, the infotainment system is slower and a bit substandard with its omitted backlighting on haptic controls, and the boot size on the Niro EV trumps both the Ariya and the ID3. I do feel the charging speed is the main bug bare, but I intend to use the car for sub 200mile journeys and city driving so should suit me.

I actually see many small improvements: little frunk, head up display, motorized liftgate, pre heat function, less wheel spin as they optimized the torque, vehicle to load, better sound system... Yes, they could've done more and the car should've been maybe 5-10% cheaper to make it perfect sell...

I tested the autosteer today with 2020 e-Niro without cruise control. It's not the same as in the new model but it does something: it makes a correction when a the car goes to the side of the road (on the line) and warns right away the driver to hold on to the steering wheel. It offered best value for money the only downside being charging speed. But then the car was apparently selling so well they bumped the price 20% and it is not longer such a great choice perhaps. I ordered this Kia Niro EV, got to testdrive it a whole weekend (seems normal in Norway), and just like you, not impressed. The auto activation of lane assist and autosteer was annoying. The constant needing to ‘pull’ the steeringwheel instead of just touching it was annoying. But the biggest dealbreaker for me was the size. It is just to small for me, also getting a baby soon, so I need something bigger. Will try the Nissan Ariya as Bjørn mentions, and see how that is. Why not get an enyaq in that case? We've had an niro ev 2021 for about a year - but it's increased in price since we bought it so we're selling it and buying an enyaq coupe instead. 4x4, bigger battery, 100L more trunk space, faster charging, not as many sounds and warnings as the kia and much more. The problem with the trim comparison is the no two countries/markets are alike. Here in NL you only get the 10 inch screen. In the UK, the basic trim is basic…. This is all driven by pricing strategies linked to the markets where it’s sold. I agree that the new Niro EV 120 kWh charging would have been better but as stated already the majority of charging is going to be done at home or parked at an office., so no real loss.. could some of the interior materials better, yes… that increases price. But the rest.. it’s down to taste and where you want to spend your money… I like the new Niro EV I have one on order to replace my Niro HEV.. I could have gone with a Chinese car or VW but for me this met all my requirements.. for others it will be different.

Hello Bjon; I follow your vídeos regulary and I like then, but this time I affraid I did not. This one was a kind of publicity for Nissan Ariya, did not count it, but i think you mencioned more times than the Niro. You did not mentioned the difference of privé for example. We will see in few years what customers says. In any case it is just my opinion. Keep on doing videos and greatings from NL

In Sweden Niro EV competes with price. And it still has that 7 year warranty. I can get a VW with 5 years warranty but that comes with a price tag. An Ariya needs the bigger battery to compete since it is less efficient so it's 20% more money.. An Ionic 5 was close in price, but they won't accept orders and don't know what the price will be for 2023 year model. EV6 is just too expensive. Family complains a little about the size of our current Kona, my only beef with it is that I can't tow a medium size trailer to get junk to the city dump etc. Otherwise its a fun car, not super comfy though.

Kia success rate in Sweden used to spell “best value price”. Since Kia now charges premium price, buyers will either choose same priced competitors or more likely lower priced Chinese cars. Bad strategy on Kia!

Delivery time for the Niro EV is currently up to 9 months according to my Kia dealership, so I don't think they have any problems selling them here. Apparently 1000's of preorders already...

@@oskich The first 3000 preorders in Sweden were signed at almost 2000 SEK lower price than todays leasing offers. The table will turn for Kia if they decide to price point with more premium brands.

I've seen lots of reviews talk about the problem with the top spec Niro-EV being close to the EV-6 and that being a problem for the Niro. I suspect the reason why they kept charge speeds as low as they did in the Niro-EV is because they were worried the top trim Niro-EV would be too much competition for the base level EV-6.

The KIA Niro EV is a great car, except it's reverse parking sound is much too loud. Imagine you are living in a quiet neighborhood, with lots of quiet electric cars. Sounds ideal wouldn't you think. No it is not. When your neighbour drives a KIA Niro EV (or EV6 for that matter), and he leaves the house at night, the whole neighborhood is woken by the sound of a truck (KIA EV) backing to the street.
