@@PaulSmith-ih8sb this engines have problems where rollers on lifters goes wrong and than in the high revs they do alot of damage on top of the valve resulting maybe droping a valve then valve hits top of the piston and this happens, i dont belive sparkplug is problem, and if something did go in the engine you would see that on intake side of turbo probably

We build and tune quite a few of the V10's. It's well known the earlier models had valve spring issues. Also keep the stock motor below 1500whp and if staying on stock valve springs do not rev them as high. The last couple of iterations of the V10 they corrected some issues with the valve springs which is why the new model's rev a little higher.

Just make sure the engine is built with stronger components in the really hard wearing areas. Redo the valve gear altogether though substituting stronger/better parts as that does seem to be a general weak spot. Then again, I’ve seen people bolt on turbos to those Audi/Lambo V10s with little to no upgrades (other than fuelling etc) and be fine for a good while. Pushing an engine over its rated value is always going to cause trouble somewhere down the line, just do as much as you can to mitigate those problems before they happen. Obviously, this can get astronomically expensive at near to the speed of light - so triage your upgrades (thinking about engine out upgrades - if that’s a factor) as best you can. Good luck with it though, they can be excellent engines and from what I’ve seen, it’s entirely luck of the draw if they’re going to be solid or not. Hope you’ve got a keeper. Oh, one more thing; something I’m sharing from personal experience (not this particular engine but similar rarity/power etc) when/if it becomes a money pit, try to limit damages before you spend the price of ten engines (and a house) fixing that one. I know that seems simple in hypothesis - but when we get our teeth into something, it’s VERY hard to cut our losses, even when it ‘makes sense’, Also, if it’s for driving on a semi-regular basis, don’t tune for set numbers (“I want 600 bhp!! etc) tune for how it feels on the road, how it picks up its skirt and gets down the road! Sorry if im telling you things you already know of course, it’s just a bit of advice from an old knacker that’s been blowing up engines for years :) :) It’d be nice to see what you’re building to be fair, if you’re thinking of putting it up here on KZbin, let us know! Best of luck though, I guarantee you will have fun, amongst the tears :) :) (only kidding).

@@John-yf8qh ha ha, yeah I am the same. Been building and breaking engines for years, usually due to a heavy foot 🤣 I need to finish my V12 build first then mybe I'll start the V10 project 🤔 I have a 5.2 and a 5.0 engines. I was thinking the 5.2 are pretty strong especially with that common pin crank. I was going to sleave the block anyway (I'm a machinist also). I am staying on the reliable side with the Mercedes m120 V12 so I was planning to tune the V10 since I need to run that one on standalone ecu. I will go for a mild tune at first until I can get some beam rods, valves, valve springs ect. The pistons are pretty good on these I believe. Yeah lots of projects as always 😆 I am new to youtube tho 😎 It's my first time recording a build

The way this looks (without the head popped off) You may get away with a new valve seat, maybe some light welding to the dome of the cylinder head, obviously a new valve (best replace all of them, preferably for some uprated ones), a piston, new conrod bearings and the turbo rebuild. With some luck it is "only" a service kit and a turbine wheel/shaft for the turbo. You may have scratches in the cylinder bore that are too deep, but given the damage to the turbo, I think you only had some aluminium from the piston fly around and that should mean your bore has a decent chance of being okay, even to the point that a light hone is all it needs and you don't need to go oversize on anything. You could have had the mushroom valve head fly around and give you some unlucky dents, or small bits of valve stem rattling around, but given the way the mushroom and the compressor wheel looked, I give you a decent chance you will get away with it. Root cause: I would say the valve broke at the neck, no evidence of the valve stem being bent because a piston pushed up on it so the break must have occured with the valve closing and hitting on the valve seat. Typical fatigue failure due to age/hard life. These are made to have to perform to the max of their ability and as a "race engine" part you can expect to have to replace them, like you already explained yourself.

Fingers crossed and best wishes for your block, Peter. I had a customer drop some valve seats in a Jaguar V12, and the bits bounced around 4 different cylinders: we used a magnet to find them in the piston tops, gouged them out, and crossed our fingers. The liners were OK, the head took some work to fix it up, but we put it all back together and it ran quite well. So maybe you will be lucky as well.

Just wanted to say thank you for showing me/us Nuke parts, I’m currently restoring a couple of old beaters and they’re both going to benefit by having Nuke’s magic wand saved over them. Unfortunately this won't be a cheap repair, but I can't wait to see the Midvo getting v1.5 or v2.0 updates!

Geezus that's the ugliest sparkplug I've ever seen 😳 I'd borescope the cylinders with a good borescope that can be manipulated over 90° so you can see your valves and heads from inside the plug holes as well as of course, the cylinder walls and piston tops.... easier than pulling the engine...but with a plug looking like that, I'm sorry to say, that doesn't look like detonation, that definitely looks like a big strike from something...so in this case, pulling is probably warranted regardless...but if you don't already have one, definitely get a good borescope that can flex "automatically" up to see the bottom of the heads... something that one in your position should definitely already have. Love the build, hope it's not serious (I'm commenting right at beginning of video before I know what's up), and keep it up... this is one of the sickest builds ever, let alone on YT, and I can't wait to see it's final form 👌🏻 Edit: also while the engine is out, cut a nice rounded rectangle out of that aluminum firewall and let's get a plexiglass or acrylic window put in there for some rear visibility 👍🏻

Anyway Peter, I think I saw metal dust in your oil, when you locked your VCT with a drill bit (The motion that circulates oil). Theres a nice dark line. Hows the oil filter? Did you see any metal in there? Might need to check all cam and crank bearings too, don't want any metal in there.

I can see why the valves break… the valve stems are really skinny below the guides. I guess it is for flow. Likely a good idea to change them to valves that doesn’t taper down towards the dish. In your case it would likely have very little impact on flow since you are running it boosted. If VAG was involved in development here that’s where the problem stems from. VAG engines from the 1.8T and forward have had this problem with the dish coming off when tuned. I’d replace all the valves. You could probably get “standard” valve cores that you machine to fit. Likely way cheaper and just as good as exotic valves made specifically for this engine. Smith is good with the lathe, right?
