People have made fun of Ice/Grass as having a million weaknesses, and they're not wrong, but it also has some unique resistances. You get Water, Grass, Electric and Ground resists while not being weak to Ice. That means you wall pretty much every Water-type since those are all the coverage types they're likely to ever run.

When I first began exploring competitive GSC, I like many others viewed Snorlax's dominance as a "problem" to be solved. I was brainstorming on my porch one morning about what mon out there exists that both resists normal STAB and is strong against normal. I would need some sort of fighting type with a rock/steel secondary typing, and landed on Lucario. "Yeah, Lucario. He'd be able to deal with Snorlax. Sounds good". But that was a few months ago at this point, and I realize how absolutely demonic that proposition would be. Fighting/steel STAB is good in Gen 2, even if Luc were forced to run less than stellar inaccurate moves like cross chop or iron tail. Let's ignore for a second the fact that it gets both SD and Agility- let's assume in this theoretical gen 2 it gets neither. Even if its only boosting move is Curse, how does one answer it? It also has the elemental punches and a very respectable 120 sp atk. It can definitely take on Lax, it has ice punch/rock slide for Zapdos, Cloyster gets hit by cross chop or even t punch, Ttar is murdered by cross chop, Golem gets hit by ice punch. I guess Suicune could try to take it on? I guess? But the more I thought about it the worst it got. What can hit Luc hard aside from other Lucs? EQ but I'm not sure anything in the tier would have a good MU into Luc and also EQ. I suppose fire types, but Luc speed ties with Moltres- Houndoom is faster, but also has base 50 defense so it would get absolutely murdered by cross chop. If Luc were kept in OU for some reason, we'd have to bring Ho-Oh into OU to deal with it I guess. GSC is a tier that deserves a lot more love than it gets, but a hypothetical GSC with Luc would be extremely degenerate. It gives you an appreciation for how profound power creep has been in the game, cause at this point Luc has fallen all the way down to RU, but in Gen 2 even with having to rely on inaccurate STABs (and assuming no SD and Agility) 115/120/90 offenses would just be a much.

I find it kinda hilarious how hail lagged behind the other three weathers for a couple of gens. It was introduced in gen 3 (while the others were in gen 2), and not only was there no snow warning in gen 3, the overworld hail effect was unused in gen 3. I suppose the devs might have been hesitant about having any sort of permanent hail, considering how much harder it is to deal with than sand in-game (having a rock, ground or steel type is much more lenient than specifically having an ice-type, even without considering ice's famously bad defensive typing). Heck, even to this day, hail lacks any of the inherent defensive properties that literally every other weather has (sandstorm buffs rock-type's spdef, sun and rain reduce the power of water and fire, respectively, the primal weathers completely nullify certain types, and delta stream neutralizes the flying-type's weaknesses.) Hail was also the only weather that didn't have its speed-boosting ability in gen 5, as slush rush was added in gen 7, meanwhile sand managed to get sand rush just in time to have an *Excadrill Moment* that pretty much ruined weather for later gens (maybe they would have nerfed weather regardless, but I still feel like the extreme weather wars probably forced their hand).

I talked about it in the comments of your last video, but I actually did a whole tournament, testing those kind of hypothesis, with Tran/Hippo/Rotom-W/Vikavolt/Roserade/Abomasnow with Snow Warning, etc. Abo was way better than expected. The Hail cheap is really great, negating Skarm/Jira Lefties was really huge, and it still hits decently hard. Plus it's really slow, so you can invest just a bit of speed, and play mixed with HP invests. Really a formidable test, which I didn't regret doing at all.

I feel like a set with focus punch over protect and quite a bit of spark could work very well on dugtrio offense. Offense already crumbles to passive damage, might as well make your opponent suffer the same, focus punch smashes blissey, and leech seed can be helpful for your teammates. The special attack is mainly to hit things like celebi and spdef skarmory harder

I think if Aboma was in gen 3, some ice types would get a bit more usage since they don't lose HP under hail, plus no rocks. sure, you're still an ice type, but without rocks you can actually do stuff. However, a lot of stuff would be losing HP to a different kind of sandstorm. what I think it would be really interesing, is if cloud nine got rid of weather alltogether instead of voiding its effects, same for air lock.

Suggestion: Video where you lay out a format where you set the rule set: eg - Which generation mechanics, a list of *** amount of pokemon, which moves are illegal or restricted, which items are added/removed and which abilities are allowed/banned Edit: probably should expand on the comment. @@rubythebee3958 Snorlax and Chansey have so many moves they could do all sorts of stuff, hard to predict. Chansey with Calm Mind becomes a sweeping threat, that's for sure. Also RBY Curselax becomes a thing, although in general I think Lax drops off big due to its low special becoming a huge liability. Maybe the biggest beneficiary that wasn't already OU is Aerodactyl, whose main problem was not having any moves but now has STAB and coverage and a boosting move in Hone Claws that pairs perfectly with its inaccurate moves like Rock Slide or Stone Edge.

nevermind close combat, consider instead cross chop. Not a guarenteed crit because of machamp's low speed, but it's still very likely, and it one shots snorlax and chansey regardless of reflect.

Would Piloswine be somewhat viable? Its stats suck but it can make some use of Toxic + protect and it can be pretty durable in any weather if played correctly. Ofc its still never taking meteor mashes from metagross or sth crazy like that. On a side note I always like to theorycraft about rough skin Garchomp on gens 3 and 4. it would be probably still busted it gen 4 since by power alone it was broken, but in gen 3 it can probably be a threatening pokemon in any non superman team with a mixed set, sd, or toxic protect.

@@vitovitovito4927 There are a few checks to different possible sets, but not true counters. I agree that it might be above OU. Celebi, Flygon, Claydol and Skarm can probably deal with sone sets but everyone has issues. Flygon dies to dragon stab and it is worse than chomp outside maybe superman teams, celebi dies to hp bug and its weak to dug, and claydol is also weak to hp bug. You can also revenge kill sd variants with gengar or starmie but only gengar switch and its not safe.

im late but i had a similar debate on another video about gen 3 abomasnow and im pretty confident it would mainly be used for hyper offense. sand would still be more consistent because ttar is way stronger and you don't want to hail chip your own defensive mons, but an aggro team with like a glalie lead for spikes, gengar to spinblock, dug to trap ttar, abomasnow to set hail, then two terrifying spike abusers like aero and moltres, that would be very hard to deal with

I'd imagine Abomasnow would be borderline. With top tier threats it will never break through even with coverage, such as Metagross, Skarmory, and Jirachi, it has no business being in OU. Even it's niches of checking Swampert and Celebi wouldn't be enough since Moltres with hp grass and banded heracross can do that more efficiently. However, Abomasnow will be incredibly useful in ubers. Even without access to choice scarf, ice shard, and wood hammer/leaf storm, being neutral to ice, having solid bulk, and access to sub/seed and giga drain would be enough to infuriate Gen III Kyogre spammers. T-tar in OU is just too good. Teams that want to be creative will use Abomasnow but Tyranitar is the superior weather setter overall.

Despite gen 5 ou being a restrictive metagame, not a single thing is checked by literally only 2 pokémon, psyspam is checked by ttar, jirachi and scizor, hazards by 3 spinner options (drill, starmie and tentacruel), thundy by latios, ttar and blissey, keldeo by latios, jellicent and celebi, not only two, also the tapus aren't switch ins into amoonguss either, the other way around instead, as amoonguss walls them

@@sandrahwu It would be somewhat insane if you could do 50% damage to everything that's grounded with 3 layers of rocks and 3 layers of spikes, so for the sake of the game yes. My alternative idea for this was to replace spikes with neutral rocks and let them stack.
