Things I got out of this video: 1. If your head is grabbed, you need to give the opponent a reason to let go. 2. #1 counter to the underhook in no gi is the headlock. 3. (Lexi on back from standing position) I pull her knee across my body and lower my upper body, so her weight is no longer supported by mine. 4. Push down on the support leg to prevent a butterfly sweep (prevents the opponent from generating any power). Allows you to set up headquarters position. 5. Where the head goes, the body must follow (using a cross face to flatten an opponent out from a position on their side, however, also take advantage of back takes when the opponent is on their side. 6. Threatening two submissions simultaneously often leads to you getting one of them. 7. To defend a front headlock, go belly down; get to the knees where it will be easier to fight off the opponent’s hands on the neck. 8. Don’t go through a frame, go around a frame; change the angle. 9. Counter arm triangles from the bottom by getting your opponent into your half guard. Still possible to be submitted but it’s harder for the opponent to get the correct angle. 10. The opponent cannot take your back (from truck) if you keep your hips in front of his. Keep your lap out of his lap. 11. Control the far arm from half guard because that is the arm they need for their own offense (i.e. to control your head). 12. Controlling posture is key to controlling your opponent. 13. Find the path of least resistance. 14. Keep a knee up to prevent the closed guard, i.e. “combat base” (you should think of getting caught in closed guard the same as being mounted or having your back taken). 15. When the knees are smashed together, the guard is weak. Don’t allow his knee to come back in to re-guard…especially if he has T-Rex arms…knee touching elbow - bad. 16. Defend everything by fight the grips.

I love the concept of customizing your rolls with whomever you're rolling with to not only minimize injury but also to get the most of out the roll! "Mode has a bad left knee, be careful you don't make it worse!" "Rich was a D2 wrestler, get him on his back if you can!" "Caitlin is small yet powerful, don't let her fool you!" "Anoop really improved his butterfly hooks this month, watch out for those long legs!" This probably seems obvious to a lot of people but as a fresh blue belt with a sprained knee, I appreciate the consideration of the other person's injuries and skills too :)

Man I love your videos. This one was super fun too hahaha. I wish I had found your channel a few years before...incredibly helpful, you are making me think about returning to training nogi again! Gave up because of injuries (yes, i think this sport is way more keen to injuries than others, ie muay thai which is what I am doing now), and frustration (I never really had a solid base / attentive instructor during rolls, so I found myself being smashed by higher belts in any imaginable way for 2 years and mostly rolling defensively heheh). Keep it up man!
@JordanTeachesJiujitsu3 жыл бұрын
Thanks man, you should!! It's all about finding the right gym and coach. Muay Thai is awesome too but with crappy training partners they can kick your knees or try force sweeps when they're not there and tear your shit up too. Good BJJ training partners that care for your safety are essential. I'm doing my best to instill safety as a priority though out my videos 🙂

@@JordanTeachesJiujitsu hey Jordan, thought you'd like to know that yesterday I tried a nogi class in a new gym after such a long time. Gym and people were nice and rolling brought back very good feelings and sensations, I enjoyed it a lot and found myself remembering things quickly. I was able to submit several times, and of course get submitted a lot hehe. The thing is my body doesnt like bjj as much as my brain does tho. Rolling with a very physical and strong guy, I inverted/rolled back to go to turtle and felt uncofortable in a particular zone of my ribs (which I had broken and craked in the past) when he put his weight on me mid-movement. It was just 1-2 seconds. However, at night i got a sore rib, and for the type of pain i am feeling right know, id say I got a cracked rib again. There is either something I do wrong in that position, as this is the second time it hapens to me, or I need way more core strenght, which I dont really know how to achieve. Maybe something you could cover in a vid?? Thanks a lot!!
