Incredibly, this is mostly a “room recording” meaning they played it live in a few takes and added vocals and (sometimes) drums after. An accomplishment I can hardly believe having done some recording in my life. The level of talent is immense considering they were all in their VERY EARLY TWENTIES. I am so old….

Mark’s Theme is a tribute song to saxophonist Lewis Evan’s late uncle, who passed away from COVID early in 2021. Here is what Evans has said about the song in an interview with Alternative Press: “Yeah, it was [for] my uncle who passed away from COVID about two months ago now. I had my sax at the workshop for ages, and I got it back the day I found out he passed away, so I just thought we’d write him something. He was a massive fan of the band, at all the gigs in the front moshing away. He was an absolute nutter. He was crazy and annoying and awesome, so we thought we’d write him a song, and we’re going to put it on the second album.” Annotation from Genius

Hey K8! You’ve started out the channel with some banger albums. Keep it up! If you haven’t listened to any Elliott Smith yet, I’d highly encourage going through his entire discography. One of the best singer-songwriters to have ever lived, and by the end he was essentially all four Beatles in one.

you need to watch them live at queen elizabeth hall, they play songs from this and their previous album and its somehow even more heartwrenching. Isaac (the singer who left the band for mental health reasons) really gave it all. The ending crescendo to Basketball shoes live is insane and god i cried listening to it. Also the whole 7 piece band went off in that performance.

Hey a lot of good recs in the comments but I really want to shout out "Twice Around the Sun" by Ugly (UK). It's their debut EP that came out this spring. It's not as crushing emotionally but sonically gave me the same kind of awe. It's a bit more folky and uses a lot of ritualistic vocals at time but the complex yet delicate production with incredible builds with horns and all is there.

I know you’re sort of on a roll with heart wrenching music but if you’re interested in some more I would recommend Elliott Smith. His music doesn’t just connect with you on a deep level but he is genuinely an incredible songwriter and guitarist/musician. I’d start with Either/Or or his selftitled from 1995. Especially the last one sounds just like a good friend singing his soul out for you in a basement, it’s very intimate.
