Trying to do more than take the order is a lot of pressure and time for someone who can’t speak their native tongue in a whole different country. Frankie, first of all, this is the first time I watched one of your videos and I’m really impressed. Learning foreign languages is no small feat, especially Chinese and Arabic. With that out of the way, I think she wasn’t trying to “pretend” to not understand you. When you said tuījiàn your tones were just slightly off. Overall I think your accent is pretty good, but because she wasn’t expecting you to speak Chinese and you slightly mispronounced the keyword in your question, I think she just legit didn’t understand you. Once she realized you could speak Chinese she engaged in conversation with you. I want to clarify that although I’m Chinese American, I’m trying to put my bias aside here. I live in Germany now, but back when I used to live in the States, I used to go to Spanish speaking neighborhoods in NYC or Miami and talk to random people in Spanish. I experienced also a lot of surprise (you kinda catch someone off guard when they don’t expect you to be able to speak their language) at first, before they realized I could speak the language, and after that it was all smiles. In any case dude, that’s just my two cents. Keep up the good work, 加油!

@@ct-gt2dt It's important to note that the decision to encourage children to learn multiple languages depends on various factors, and there's no one-size-fits-all answer. Here are a few points to consider: 1. **Cognitive Benefits:** Learning multiple languages has been associated with cognitive benefits, such as improved problem-solving skills, creativity, and enhanced memory. 2. **Globalization:** In an increasingly interconnected world, knowing multiple languages can be advantageous for future career opportunities. Many employers value multilingual skills, especially in industries with international exposure. 3. **Cultural Understanding:** Learning different languages can foster cultural understanding and appreciation. It allows individuals to communicate and connect with people from diverse backgrounds, promoting tolerance and empathy. 4. **Academic Performance:** Research suggests that learning additional languages can positively impact academic performance, including in subjects like math and English. It may enhance overall cognitive abilities. 5. **Flexibility and Adaptability:** Knowing multiple languages can contribute to adaptability and flexibility in different environments. It may also make it easier to learn additional languages in the future. While these points highlight potential benefits, it's essential to recognize that every child is unique, and their educational needs may vary. Striking a balance between core subjects like Math, Science, and English and introducing language learning can be achieved based on individual abilities and interests. It's not about knowing an excessive number of languages but about the advantages that a second or third language may bring in a child's personal and academic development.

She didn't pretend. If you spoke multiple languages you'd understand. I am from Belgium, native languages are Dutch and French. I also speak English and German. It has happened rarely, with my siblings, when I don't expect it and someone switches mid convo in French to Dutch for example. I litteraly don't get it for a few seconds, my brain is still wired in French. It's as if my brain is trying to understand in french intonations or trying to get what french words ressembles what they are saying to get the sentence. Then I'm like... you are not understanding this french bc it's not french dumbarse. And it's weird bc I KNOW Dutch, I've been speaking it since I was 2yo its basically a native language. And the opposite happens too. It's like when you read, you don't read each letter to get the sentence. You recognize the words and this knows what it says. There are many psychological tests made where there are big mistakes in spelling or words missing but you legit didn't notice before it's pointed out to you. Like I have dig bick. You this read wrong. You read that wrong too. See ? That's how are brains brainwash you. I'm half Belgian and half from the Cape verdian Islands. But I'm in the capital of Belgium, Brussels, that is bilingual but mostly french speaking. Dutch speakers then Sometimes try asking directions or whatever of me on streets and I notice the accent so I switch midway to Dutch. The amount of Dutch speaking ppl who just persist in broken french like for a few back and forths, until I just stare at them for a few seconds, seeing the slow realisation that I've been talking to them in Dutch this whole time and their brains failed to acknowledge this is priceless. It's funny bc you see it's a legit brain short-circuit and not on purpose. But you also realise that if I looked 100% Caucasian, they would've unconsciously accepted it straight up. Like 'ah she's Belgian, probably from Brussels or Flanders hence she's speaking both'' Nvm that I am litteraly from and born in Brussels, Belgian, with my whole mother's side with Belgian origins. But their brain refuses to subconsciously compute it with my caramel ass face. It's the same for this lady, she wasn't being purposely Malicious no. However she was subconsciously discriminating, by not understanding the possibility that anyone who doesn't look like her could be talking her language. Her brain kept trying to analyze English, which she's already not very good at and none of his words made sense in English. She just taught her English was just too bad to get him. Took her a few seconds to pull her head out of her ass and realise not only is he not speaking English, but the language he is speaking is one she knows. Honestly her it's more acceptable bc she's in a foreign country speaking a foreign language. I would litteraly be speaking the countries languages and ppl would even asked me where I learned as if I wasn't speaking fucking Dutch in fucking Belgium. And then I'd just say ''I went to school you know'' or ''i lreaned from....my mom ?" and then it would click that they were being absolute morons on top of being kinda racists. These dumb questions almost exclusively come from old ppl but seriously, you'd think this is some isoled place with ppl who had never seen other ppl in their while lives when we were litteraly in the fucking capital, with tons of immigrants like what. Sorry for the rant lol

Yeah when he first starts speaking Chinese I think they were expecting English so they couldn't interpret it. The tones were a bit off on that first sentence so unless they were expecting to hear Chinese they likely genuinely were not able to understand him-I don't think they were pretending. Usually if someone is expecting to hear Chinese the tones being slightly off won't matter, but if they think you're speaking English then they genuinely would be confused and not pretending. I couldn't really understand it the first time he said it and I was actually expecting it so I don't think they were pretending. Also these people may primarily speak their own dialect most of the time so they may also just not be as much on the lookout mentally for Mandarin.

Being a linguist is so underrated. They never expect it from a black person but it’s nice that they light up. I feel like you are educating them while learning their language and customs at the same time. Education is beautiful.

I think it had nothing to do with him being a young Black man. I believe she was shocked that an American was fluent in her language. She could recognize him as an American by his accent.

The white guy who does this is never met with anything but acceptance and the joy of someone knowing their language. This young man was met with annoyance and given the statement "I dont understand you" knowing full well she did. I'm glad he was able to turn it around with kindness and the love he extended to them. I hope this is a learning moment for this restaurant and those that watched. Blackness to them are the things they have been taught. Rather, they, other people of color, have been taught to hate blackness and socialized to understand that if they stand with blackness they are essentially standing against their own progression in society in any place on earth and they will accordingly be treated as black people are treated. All the while, they share in our blackness genetically. This self hatred is a psychological problem that people all over must unlearn and must stand against in order to establish trust and love among us that then can be extended to the world. Only people who want to control you and your resources will tell you to hate others that share your history. They tell and point at you that black takes from you, all the while they steal from you with the other hand. We must do better! Hatred can not reside in heaven.

as someone who worked at my families mexican restaurant for years, i am curious about why they may not have understood you at first. i have had people order in spanish when im expecting them to speak english, or the other way around. it really throws me off and i have to ask them to repeat themselves. this happens all the time, even now that i don’t work there. if im expecting someone to speak one language and then they start speaking a completely different language, my brain jumbles up and i have to restart the conversation lol. i remember once time a man walked in with his girlfriend. they both said hello and greeted me in english. they were also very obviously white americans. all of a sudden, the man started speaking to me in spanish and i was completely thrown off. i just stared at him and was like?? he ended up telling me that he studied abroad in spain and that’s how he became fluent. it was really cool. a few of my coworkers who only speak spanish were really excited to hear a white person speak flawless spanish.

I agree. Also, his first sentence was in the wrong pitch/accent, which completely changes the meaning of the word he said (from recommendations to foot release). As a fluent Chinese speaker, it also took me a second to understand (actually i only understood after playing it back and reading the subtitles), so its not actually the workers fault on that part
