So today me and my friend Frankie visited a Chinese hair salon in NYC’s Chinatown of Flushing, Queens and totally shocked the staff when both of us all of a sudden started speaking in fluent Mandarin (and some Cantonese and Fuzhounese)! We also hung out in Flushing and got some great street food, bubble tea, and some snacks in the market, all while speaking Chinese! Frankie’s language learning story is actually really cool because he learned to speak Chinese by working in a hair salon in Flushing, and he’s never been to China.

My ex-wife's family all lived in New Mexico near the border and all of them grew up speaking fluent Spanish without a single lesson, just from hanging out with so many Spanish speakers. Her niece spoke better Spanish than English at four years old, because of her Mexican baby sitter.

i think one reason is because it removes that element of racism. there's always the chance with anyone, that they might be rude, ignorant, or whatever (especially in america), so most people are cautious. but if you hear them speaking the language, you know that person is the same as you, or at least has enough interest in the culture to learn the language, so you immediately see them as one of your own. so you can start joking around, saying random things, etc.

I moved to China in 2019 and I just figured it was impossible to learn mandarin so I didn’t even bother. After meeting a couple foreigners who did speak Chinese I thought I’d give it a try. That’s when I found this channel, by the end of 2020, and I couldn’t understand anything aside from 你好 and 谢谢. It’s now 2022 and although I can’t just go and speak about anything in Chinese, I’m able to get by daily at work, restaurants, hair salons and such. And I’m so happy to come back here and basically understand everything.

It's totally understandable. For one, as someone who's learning Spanish, it's so mentally exhausting when you're speaking a new language since you're constantly focusing hard on what others are saying, trying to remember words and conjugation, etc. When you get a break and get to go back to speaking your native language it's so much easier. Plus, as humans we love the unexpected and we love to connect with others. Hearing a white/black American speaking an Asian language fluently is super rare and gives an irresistible urge to want to find out about them and to find things in common and kind of push their limits to see what they can do. It's natural.
