Marvel really knows how to blend real life Religious lore with Comic Pantheon. Bast is based on an Egyptian Goddess named Bastet who was a woman, a lioness and later became a cat. She was the daughter of Re, the God of the sun. Bastet herself was knows as the "Goddess of the home, fertility and war" who protected her house from evil spirits and especially diseases that mainly targeted women and children. People still speculate wether her name translates into "Soul of Auset" (Auset is another name for ISIS"). Also debate wether Auset was her mother or if she was actually Auset herself.

Rob, if you're looking to try something outside of Marvel and DC I'd LOVE to hear your thoughts on The Dresden Files. To be fair, I have not read the comics, only the novels. But the novels are AMAZINGLY good and I'd like to hope the comics are too.
