Hell yeah!! I've always loved Tony Martin's voice and he really doesn't get the accolades he deserves. Every Sabbath album he sang on, except " Forbidden ", is a great album. Martin only had the misfortune of singing in a band that had more than one reunion with Ozzy and Dio over the years. Loved your comments....The CROSS PURPOSES album is a gem that also features Geezer on bass, so check it out.

I love your reactions! This is one of my favorite songs by anyone. This was the great and underrated singer Tony Martin. who went on to record several albums as Black Sabbath's singer. All of the guitar (other than bass) is all Tony Iommi, layering. Out of the whole original Black Sabbath, this album featured only Tony Iommi as an original member, before Geezer Butler rejoined. The song was the studio track overlaid on a concert video, so that you could have the best sound possible while still having something to see to add to the experience. Tony Iommi was not only a creative genius as a musician, but was also a master at spotting talent and hiring singers, and making the most of their talents by tailoring the music he wrote to adapt to the singers' strengths. The drummer here was Cozy Powell, who was the drummer for Rainbow with Dio, and did the drumming on Stargazer, so Iommi was even great at picking drummers, like Bill Ward. Thealbum was "Headless Cross", which was the name of the title track. The line you were trying to decipher was, "This is the hours of dying." This song also has one of the great lyric lines ever, which is, "Don't laugh in the face of death, or your tongue will blister." :) (Just in case, I assume you have the images reversed on purpose.)

Thank you for doing this song! For me this is, qualitywise, a frikking Sabbath classic! Up there with their alltime best songs! Tony was and is such underrated and underappreciated singer by the the Black Sabbath fan-hardliners, by a lot of Metal fans even. Mid-nineties he suffered vocal/throat issues and that did him in for a good number of years (and it showed in his live performances), but oh man back in his first Sabbath years, he was absolutely fabulous! Check the Tyr liveshows in 90, he was on top of his game. Less high notes perhaps, but so incredibly powerful!

It’s refreshing to hear you reacting to Tony Martin era Sabbath!!!! I find myself going to this era more than the Ozzy or even Dio eras. No drama: just badass tunes!!! Hopefully you react to the title track to this album, “Headless Cross”…the riff is so heavy & such an epic song. The rest of the album is badasssssss!!!! Try “Devil & Daughter” & “Black Moon” as well….for further Tony Martin era Sabbatb, check out “TYR”, “Cross Purposes”, “The Eternal Idol” & “Forbidden” 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽

I guess I assumed he did. Must be because Tony and geezer were so unhappy with Ian I guess. I went to see them with Ian and loved it, lol. I have seen them with Ozzy for "Never say Die!", and their reunion on Ozzy's "No More Tears (Tours lol)" and with Halford on that nigh. Dio dipped because he didn't ant to play an Ozzy show so Halford stepped in. I would have loved to see Dio and Martin too. I think Ray was good too.@@rodrigozzy

The Album this is from: ‘Headless Cross’ (named after a Village in the U.K. county of Redditch not far from Black Sabbaths home City of Birmingham) is a great album. It’s like a walk in a clear moonlit October night across fields and forests. Kill in The Spirit World is also a good track from the same album. Yes the Tony Martin era of Black Sabbath was underrated, was a bit more prog rock than metal, but considering this was the 1980’s hair metal era (think Poison, Motley Crue, Skid Row etc)…it’s head and shoulders above 90% of what was coming out at the time 😎

After the original Black Sabbath reunited to play Live Aid in 1985, there were legal issues between Ozzy and the band... so the reunion was for that show only. Ozzy went back to his solo career in 1986. Guitarist Tony Iommi recorded a solo album 'Seventh Star' w/ vocalist Glenn Hughes that same year, but his record label wanted it to be a Black Sabbath album... So, he released it as Black Sabbath feat. Tony Iommi in 1986... However, without any of the original members in the band, fans would not accept this new Black Sabbath, despite the quality of the record being great... Unfortunately, Glenn Hughes was struggling w/ addiction and couldn't sing live. He was replaced by vocalist Ray Gillen, but the tour was cancelled after poor attendance. While writing the next Sabbath album 'Eternal Idol' in 1987, Ray Gillen was fired and replaced by this vocalist - Tony 'Cat' Martin, who recorded the album... Sales for the record did not meet label expectations, so Black Sabbath was dropped by Warner Bros. Records. They signed w/ an indie label, Tony Martin stayed as the vocalist w/ Tony Iommi on guitar and veteran drummer Cozy Powell... they released this album 'Headless Cross' in 1989 and bassist Neil Murray joined the band, and u see that lineup in this video. As far as I know, Tony Iommi was the sole guitarist, but had keyboardist (the late) Geoff Nichols behind him... The next album 'Tyr' was released in 1990 and was a commercial failure. The fans did not want to hear Black Sabbath without either Ozzy or Ronnie James Dio. So, Tony Iommi brought back Black Sabbath's 1981 line-up w/ Ronnie James Dio on vocals, Vinny Appice on drums, and original bassist Geezer Butler... they recorded and released the 'Dehumanizer' album in 1992, which did much better. Unfortunately, Ronnie bailed after Black Sabbath signed on to open for Ozzy in 1993... Judas Priest's Rob Halford did those shows on vocals for Black Sabbath. But another attempt to reunite the original band failed in 1994. With Tony 'Cat' Martin returning on vocals and Bobby Rondinelli on drums, Iommi and Geezer Butler recorded the album 'Cross purposes' in 1994... In 1995, Butler and Rondinelli left Sabbath and Neil Murray and Cozy Powell returned for the album 'Forbidden'... it was Black Sabbath's worst-selling album. They were literally touring clubs in 1996 to support the record, while Ozzy was playing arenas as a solo artist. In 1997, Ozzy offered Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler to reunite as Black Sabbath for his Ozzfest '97 tour... And that was the first time the original band had toured together since 1978. Later in the year, original drummer Bill Ward signed on and the full Black Sabbath reunion was complete.

As the video audio is from the studio album, there's probably a few layers of each guitar on the track, not counting Brian May's guest solo (which would have needed a few more layers for his guitar harmonies) with Tony Iommi playing the end lead during the fade. The rhythm guitar has (at least) two tracks for the main riffs. Tony Martin's era of Sabbath is vastly under-rated. From the same album as this, I'd recommend...all of it! Seriously though, 'Devil and Daughter' and 'Black Moon' have fantastic grooves and 'Headless Cross' is slightly faster than the bulk of 'When Death Calls' but doesn't lose any power

A couple of other Tony Martin Black Sabbath songs that I'd like to see a reaction to are "Nightwing" from this same album, which features a combination of acoustic and electric guitar. From the first Sabbath Tony Martin album, there's "Eternal Idol," a doom laden track, with one of Tony's massive ponderous riffs.

WOW WOW. You know Sabbath can do no wrong in my eye and ears. I'll tell you what it is that set Sabbath apart from most others in the genre, Its like hearing them is like rolling hills, rather than jagged mountains, that's the smoothness you refer to. I don't much care how they do it. Just that part of their sound being there is awesome. I gave up with Sabbath when Dio left. I was thinking that now the best has gone, they'll never be as good. What a stupid mistake. (My lie's been full of those). This guy's voice is fantastic. I have a feeling that this was an over dub. It sounded to clean and crisp to be live. And not only that, the person editing was, how can one say crap without offending... Oh, got it, not very accurate with the cutting. Hehehe. I must mention the reactions to Sabbath are increasing growing in keen appreciation. It took a little while for them to take hold me. It was ib the 80s when I started buy Sabbath albums. By then rock had been in my blood for about 15 years, going back, slade, the sweet and other glam rock outfits that regularly topped the charts in the early 70s. (I'm not that old really. I case you wondered... LOL). Stuff to do. Catch you soon. TTFN. Hi Mike.😊😊
