When WCW and Eric Bischoff started booking Nitro shows in close proximity to WWF Raw events, Vince McMahon decided to send some superstars to Nitro to "knock on the door". DX, consisting of Triple H, Chyna, X-Pac and The New Age Outlaws, were tasked with bringing the fight straight to WCW's doorstep and the whole thing was shown on TV.
With a jeep (or a tank as the WWE likes to tell us) and a ton of artillery, D-Generation X drove to the Norfolk Scope to invade WCW. The mission was to travel to Nitro, try and get the P.O.W.C.Ws released (Kevin Nash and Scott Hall), and make their way back to WWF Raw after the mission had been completed. The clips of DX invading WCW proved to be a massive success, and the WWF decided to do it all again when D-Generation X visited the CNN Centre just 2 weeks later.
Eric Bischoff decided he had to retaliate and take the focus away from DX. On WCW Nitro, Eric answered by challenging Vince McMahon to a fight at WCW Slamboree 1998. Vince declined the invitation, and many believe that Eric's challenge felt more desparate than enteratining.
This video looks at DX invading WCW Nitro, DX visiting the CNN Centre, and Eric Bischoff challenging Vince McMahon in retaliation.

According to Big Show on the Stone Cold podcast, when DX invaded Bischoff was going around saying he wanted to challenge Vince a a fight. Hogan then apparently turned to Show and said “Vince is crazy he’ll tear his eye out”

I can believe it, if half of what was reported is true, Vince McMahon is absolute apeshit. Dude is probably some form of bipolar and likely has a history of some roid rage.

I tend to believe that McMahon wouldn't want DX going into the Scope. Your own product is finally catching up and even beating the competition, and if they appear on Nitro, that just goes back to how the "anything can happen on Nitro" vibe Bischoff wanted to create.

Nah I don't think so. If the people know that DX, a stable from the rival's company, successfully made it inside and cause further chaos, it would've been a spat in the face for WCW. Eric Bischoff does the right thing at the time by closing the door on DX, as well as Vince and Triple H for capitalizing the both companies rivalry by invading them.

It would have been interesting to see how this would have played out on a WCW PPV. Perhaps they would have struck some kind of deal where we got to see a WCW VS WWF “war” on TV. You know... with hindsight being 2020... If the WWF & WCW knew Vince was going to end up buying WCW; just imagine what kind of angles we could've had if they never closed those shutters. Of course Vince wouldn't want to see his guys lose because that'd result in wrestling fans viewing WCW as superior but this could've been something that laid the groundwork for the "WCW Invasion" in 2001. Granted this is all fantasy booking & definitely would've never seen the time of day but there were so many possibilities here. With the success of the DX Invasion, I'm SHOCKED Vince didn't book something similar for the WCW/ECW invasion in 2001. I guess it's just something that will live on in our minds in an array of "what ifs" from yesteryear.

Yeah Vince's pride would have got in the way and would have prevented WWF from looking weaker than WCW. I often hoped Vince would have purchased WCW but allowed Eric Bishoff to run it as separate show instead of absorbing it so we could have legit got invasions where it appeared wrestlers crossed over from one show to another. It was wasted potential.

Everytime WWE comes to the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, they give out free tickets, at least over the last decade. They still struggle to fill up the venue even with the free tickets.

I went to raw that night and had to pass the scope on my way from where I live. If I remember correctly it was a craft show that was giving away free tickets, but you are 100% accurate that it was clever editing on wwf’s part.

Having live in Virginia Beach at the time, I went to all the wrestling shows that came to the Scope around then (World War 3 was my favorite). I was there the day DX showed up. And I remember thinking to myself why they would be talking about "invading Nitro" long before the show even started. Still, it was fun to be a part of it all.

I got free tickets when RAW came to Cleveland (during 98 I believe) so it's fair to say that both companies occasionally threw some freebies to the fans...which was nice to see, man wrestling was so much fun back then...then it quickly faded away

I remember going to nitro in st. Louis in 2000 or 2001. We were walking up to the arena looking for a ticket window and a guy walked up to us and asked if we needed tickets. He handed them to us and I remember we all thought they were fake. But sure enough we walked right in and sat about 15 rows back from the ring. We were so excited!

If wcw invaded the week later after DX invaded,Vince would have let them in then and he would've won the Monday night war right there. His logic was "what show would you watch? The one everyone on it or the one with nobody on it?"
