I think the reason why this one works is because it's actually from PayPal. So scammer sets up a PayPal account, which allows estimates as part of the legitimate service. So scammers use this feature, then create the 'Note' to make it looks like it was a legitimate note from PayPal, not the scammer. So they add their own phone number and phish for victims. I suspect the way it works next is it'll use the note you send back to generate an actual invoice as if you've accepted the estimate. Then you'd have to go through PayPal's dispute process to deal with it. So they're exploiting an actual PayPal feature, and it's worth forwarding to the official PayPal scam/abuse address. It's why the header verification works, because they are using PayPal's system to generate the notes.

In simple terms, it appears that the scammers have highjacked the PayPal Server and piggybacked part of the server for their own use. PayPal will not wish to admit that. This is actually being done through paypals estimating service, part of the scam is they'll convert the estimate to an invoice through paypal if you accept the estimate: | Can I convert estimates into invoices? | Convert your estimate into an invoice at any time. Your customer doesn’t need to accept the estimate through PayPal for you to convert it into an invoice. That is also why the email did in fact come from paypal. In future if you are not sure though, your security measures were not enough, at least use a virtual machine to isolate just in case the link leads to malware.

Thanks. The other giveaway before even checking the email headers was the shoddy English. No-one at Paypal would say "...from billing department of Paypal". That looks like a translation of how non-English languages would word it. Also, they seem to start the sentence with "Billing department Of Paypal....", which suggests it's Eastern European, maybe Russian, since when speaking English they normally don't use the definite article "the". It's always a giveaway in their scams. They also capitalised the "Of" for some reason. So, not even remotely convincing!

That's another thing to be wary of - if you wouldn't trust someone with that amount of cash, don't buy something via 'friends and family'. I was buying a uke (secondhand) from a private seller online (£110), the seller asked me to do this. I said I wasn't comfortable with it, explaining that it protected him and me if we did it officially. He said, yes, but the fee will cost me about £5. I said, okay - I'll pay you the £5 extra. (all this through the official chat, so both sides were still protected.) I did so, got the uke, and am very happy with it. The seller was happy (since he still go the money without having to re-advertise). I hope the seller has also learnt that it would have protected him in the case of some problem or claim, and doesn't ask people to do it in future.

@@ukeleleEric Agreed the funny thing was this person wanted me to do the deal through PayPal never a mention of anything else and I had no idea about the other side of the service but now I have, I spent a little while on the phone with their customer protection team who were very very helpful and were going to credit me my money if the bank couldn't sort it out and I was told both parties were getting the law involved with the scammers.

I've had plenty of scam emails from PayPal, if you don't recognise any payment requests, just delete the whole thing. Simple as that.

Whenever I get similarly convincing emails, as soon as it says "click this button" or whatever - I delete it and then actually go through to the official site and then look at the issue.

I seem to be getting a lot of scam emails lately. I’m a bit paranoid. But I do tend to go to the actual company. But I’m bothered I may be having a “dozy” day one day and mess up.

I had this one today, it is indeed very clever. They're gambling on a tiny percentage of people misreading/misunderstanding the big button on that page and initiating a transaction.

Yes I get those PayPal mails at least once a week and I don't even have a PayPal account. A real bother because it prevents me from having the confidence to get a PayPal account whereas so many entities use it. Drag. Thanks for the reassurance.

I had something similar happen years ago with someone trying to scam my bank details. email looked legit, was directed to opening an electronic dialogue. They kept asking me to give my details but I just responded by getting them to verify who they're talking to. "I know my name, you say you're my bank, you already know my name and address, what is my full name?, would you like to ask me my security question?"... they gave up quite quickly.

It should probably be noted that once you load up the link that goes to that specific invoice you are at some level telling the site your visiting that you got the message, and you clicked the link, and by extension that your email address is active and you were tempted enough to click the link. The VPN and TOR do not protect you from that.

I never take any notice of any emails from PayPal.. They advised as much to me not to, but rather login to your PayPal directly and never use links..

I got a notification that there had been suspicious activity on my PayPal and they froze my account. I hadn't been on PayPal in 6 years or used it so I laughed. They wanted me to log in to fix the problem. Nope, keep it frozen. LoL

Thank you for this video. I also got a similar email. I knew I couldn't click on the link and didn't know your method for checking into the message so I just deleted it. I believe PayPal is up to some shenanigans in the US regarding their new terms of use. The terms are far reaching and vaguely-worded. They appear to be ways to cheat people out of money.

Thanks for the heads up. Scammers are incredibly sophisticated theses days. I always log into my PayPal account, never clicking on the links in the message and from within my account I look for proof of that request and then act from within PAyPal.

Very good video, big fan of the channel. I would say you forgot the obvious. I would leave all links well alone, including phone options. Open up the official app or go to official website for their customer support number to make sure. Personally I've saved PP, Bank, Ebay, etc numbers as I've used them. Never click or respond directly to the received message when in doubt. If there is a scam happening to your account you'll already be talking to the right people.

It is very simple. Never click on any links in emails. If you have an email that claims to be from anyone you have an account with, just log into your account in the usual way. Ignore emails.
