to be honest, this blackberry phone looks very nice, it might be awkward at first but it's unique. And I think blackberry should not join the trends of full display touchscreen thing, they should stay designing physical keyboard phones, because that's what they're good at. so its nice knowing that they're going back to the classics. :)
@StrickenWithFear10 жыл бұрын
But they have full touch screen phones already.

yah, I know. but i think they should go back to the basics and not making another full touchscreen smartphones. because that's not their thing. :)

Modesto Manuel Have you actually seen their touch screen phones? In particular the Z30? It's an amazing phone. Also they have been making fully touchscreen phones before their new operating system BB 10 was out. Blackberry storm and torch were touch screen phones.

Great review and good tips. One of the things you mentioned is going to the hub. In fact if you press and hold the row of numbers on the bottom of the screen, as you move left and right it takes to you all the pages on your device including the hub without too much finger movement :)
@jwisit10 жыл бұрын
FYI. If the only "Google Services" you use are GMail and Calendar (like me), then the Passport is unmatched. Also, those "browser issues" you mentioned are not BlackBerry issues, but rather limitations coded into the mobile website by the Google Plus team. Video/audio. Did you try moving the camera focus square? And you don't have to worry about covering the bottom microphone--it has 4 microphones. Which are used to create the best phone call audio quality on the market, if you ever, you know, use your phone as a phone. :)

Great review. This review shows why you are the best. Instead of just using the Amazon app store and complaining about the lack of apps like the other reviewers, you put some effort into using the Passport by getting the Google Playstore sideloaded, then making your decision about the Passport. Having access to the Google Playstore is important to people thinking about making the switch to or back to a Blackberry. Great job Erica.

I really enjoyed my time with this device. It was a new, refreshing experience after so many Android and iOS phones. In the end, I sent it back because of the annoyances Erica mentioned of getting things to work. At first, it's a challenge, but after a while, you just get frustrated that things you need/want to work won't and it's just easier to go back to an iPhone or Android phone. I guess I was trying too hard to turn it into an Android phone, since it runs most of the apps, but Blackberry's meager offerings don't leave us much choice. Still, I think Blackberry did a great job with the hardware and it was not an easy decision to return it.

New Blackberry 10 devices is great, really great, and OS is great as well, but the situation with apps in Blackberry World makes me sad. Thanks for the positive review of the BlackBerry Passport. Just a few things to consider: Seems that you spent a lot of time on things like Color Balance that almost NOBODY cares about much. Why don't you mention the swipe down option to scale Android Apps? Your hand movements are very distracting. Who cares about Google Plus? Many of us really try to avoid Google knowing everything about us. Games are NOT a big deal for the Passport intended target users. You never discussed the superior calendar, usage flow, sharing, file manager, Blend, USB and all of the other connectivity like built-in cloud storage, BBM, how great the Hub is, etc.
@EricaGriffin10 жыл бұрын
I have a primarily android based audience and I challenged myself to use this device from the perceptive of an Google user. I most certainly didn't promise an exhaustive review and who is to say that people don't care about what I covered? Scaling didn't work. For now trying to scale apps just restarts the app. I'd have to use the device for longer than a week to make an exhaustive review. I think you simply missed the point of my video and expect me to cover it from the perspective of a blackberry fanboy. That's not what you are getting here from me but that doesn't mean I didn't review the device correctly. If my video didn't please you you are free to search one of the many others out there who really understand the blackberry platform.
@Thiesi10 жыл бұрын
Erica Griffin To be quite honest, I really like your review, Erica, as it is exactly what we (= BlackBerry "fanboys") as well as BlackBerry need. We don't need CrackBerry reviews praising even the worst shortcomings as the greatest innovations, but of course we don't need haters ranting about how BlackBerry fails at everything when instead it's them failing at understanding even the most basic concepts behind a BlackBerry device. The truth is, BlackBerry's handheld business is probably not going to survive with just us "fanboys" buying their devices, so they *need* to attract people from other platforms. Not hundreds of millions though, yet they still have to convert at least *some* Apple and Android lovers. However, in order to be able to do that, they need to improve on their weaknesses --> as perceived by people coming from these other platforms
@TheRicosauve10 жыл бұрын
Your reply is right on point, the constant attempt to compare BB phones to others without taking into account their target market is laughable. I as a consumer don't use much of Google services, in fact I limit my use to a general email and KZbin given the serious security and privacy issues. This device is geared towards serious power users...we don't play games largely if ever, we don't use Chrome as a browser (again, security & privacy issues), we do use the powerful hub, we do require top of class security, we do use superior productivity tools. Another words, if I want a toy then I wouldn't consider a BB. If I want a top of class business device then there isn't another choice other than a BB. Folks when you attempt to make videos, you should remember the intended use of the device on a daily. Not gonna be many power business users who even know about Google services let alone care to use them. Try to demonstrate the features of the device rather than how you use your phone.

***** If I wanted to review this device for the niche BlackBerry audience, I would have. But the BlackBerry niche is few and far between, not so lucrative. It makes more sense from a video standpoint to observe it from another perspective...an Android or iPhone perspective (much more lucrative base). Mainstream users want to know what they can do with it. This review is for them. If you want a review from a BlackBerry fan, hang around sites like Crackberry, obviously.

Blackberry honestly has the best interface of any OS out there. It's fast, reliable, no quirks, full of options, no bugs, and quite simply, it's very EASY to use. I used a Z10, an old device, for about 5 days and was simply blown away. Puts iOS and Android to shame. The HUB idea to the left is quite simply brilliant and neither my iPhone 6 or Note 4 come even close to that simplicity.
@reliableandrew9 жыл бұрын
+AndreM678 Well said. I guess a 2 year old device is considered 'old' in current parlance but the Z10 is the original and the best in my opinion. Blackberry's R&D considered everything in the creation of that piece of technology. Nearly 3 years on, my Z10 continues to serve me well, everything else is mere embellishment.

Excuse me? You don´t have to bounce from the physical keyboard onto the virtual, the virtual pop up is a map for you, you can keep your fingers on the physical keyboard. Correct me if I am wrong.
@EricaGriffin10 жыл бұрын
No, you aren't wrong, you are right. The thing is though that if you swipe down and touch the keyboard to the mapped key, every single time you touch the keyboard it makes you swipe down again to get the virtual keys to pop up. It's faster to just press the keys on the screen...unless there is a keyboard lock to make the virtual keys disappear once you touch the keyboard I see no point in using the mapped keys.
@hayward500010 жыл бұрын
Erica Griffin The swipe down for symbols is only for quick one time use anyway. The same goes for the virtual keyboards on Z10/30 devices. Unless you are going to type a number out or a couple of symbols... 1234... (1) etc. then you would not use the mapped keyboard you would just press the symbol button and do what you got to do. BTW, 10.3 android runtime allows users to choose between 3 types of scaling for Android apps on 1:1 screen devices. Just swipe down from the top and it will give you a choice of removing the bottom bar and also to scale the app. I have the absolute latest Netflix and it works perfectly fine. Another thing is there is a secret back-button gesture for android apps. It is a diagonal swipe from the bottom right corner slightly up and to the left. Then there is no need for bottom bar. It seems like you went through a lot of work-arounds for some Android apps and I would say that you are right in saying that someone who isn't completely tied to one ecosystem would find it easier to use BB10 without needing to tinker with it. Your reviews have been great to watch.

I think the biggest hurdle when trying out a BlackBerry as either a dedicated Android or iOS user is they try to make their phone into the exact same thing they came from and either minimize or completely ignore the technologies a new platform has as its constantly compared to something its not and never intended to be in the first place. Erica realized that and took the Passport and judged it on its own merits. GJ Erica! Blackberry partnered with Amazon for the Android side of things due to the lack of developers to port an app to another platform and ensure it works 100%. Blackberry took this and are constantly updating and making sure their Android runtimes are up to date and are following the protocols Android uses when developing applications. They have come a long way in such a short amount of time that if more people gave BB a chance and told the company what they wanted then it would come sooner rather than later. That's the catch 22 and something Blackberry as a company suffered from in the past and is still reeling from now by not listening to their user base. With Chen at the helm hopefully there's brighter days ahead for the artist formerly known as RIM.
@jwisit10 жыл бұрын
You should try this again with the recently released OS 10.3.1. My Passport is like a completely different phone. The Android apps run much better. And the new SNAP client for Google Play is really improved too. (Still lacking support for Google Services though, as far as I'm aware). Also, you no longer have to worry about aspect ratio problems (like the Netflix issue) because you can emulate different aspect ratios. Just swipe down > Size > Rectangular app. And it remembers your settings for each Android app.

Got a Iphone used it for a week returned it for a Passport - havent looked back since. What your review has emphasised least on is most importantly its security features especially the Passport's login options - which is a mile away from other premium smartphones in the industry. The picture login interface is excellent and safe. Unlinke the iPhones finger print login which makes the phone vulnerable if the phone owner is asleep or drugged...the Passport is much safer - you could stare at the screen while I login and still be unable to access the phone - that is just remarkable.

From a functionality standpoint, this has to be the best phone ever created. Some of the gesture based actions, as we'll just the sheer fluidity of operating the device is nearly bringing me to tears

Asphalt 8 is available in the Blackberry App World as well. Not free though. But maybe that also means that you don't have any ads and (since recently) commercials... Anyway, great review as always. I really like Blackberry 10 OS. I have the idea that BB10OS runs smoother than Android, and that apps don't need the specs an Android device needs to run an app well. Strangely enough, in benchmarks it does lose out to any similar specced Android device. A feature that I really like and isn't covered is the fact that you can manage the access apps have to certain parts of the phone. In this respect it's also worth mentioning that you don't have those options for android-apps that you install. Also, Blackberry Maps works great and is basically the best working navigation-app I've used on a phone. Better than TomTom, Sygic, Navigon, HERE. Btw, I need suger. Not in my food, because I only eat green vegetables (tip for people who need to lose weight). But there's a lot of sugar in liquor as well.

Erica Griffin Could it simply be an Android port? That would explain its loading times/behavior being similar to the that of the Android version.

This video is proof! That the Passport is not for the weak at heart. Becareful, you might get Carpal syndrome by putting a LITTLE effort in pressing down on an accurate keyboard!?!? Could not take that serious, I mean cmon, really?!?!?

@juanvidal31899 жыл бұрын
Another biased review. A week is not even enough to grasp the awesomeness of the BlackBerry OS. When you do a month then do a review. And for God's sake, stop comparing products with other platforms. Is like saying, John Doe sucks because he can't do a 100m dash like Usain Bolt. Review the product as if no other product exists. That's how reviews are done.

This device is just so bad for watching any videos or photographs because of that weird resolution. The letterboxing is atrocious! And I dont buy the logic that this being a business phone, it doesnt matter. Business guys are human beings too and everyone needs some entertainment once in a while. And in a world where there already are devices which handle both business and leisure competently, there really is no justification for a weird form factor like this just to stand out.Awkward to hold, awkward screen res, awkward phone overall !!
@bilalha12310 жыл бұрын
Exactly. 4:3 is better for browsing the Web and reading, but even then letterboxing for 16:9 and 21:9 videos is pretty bad. 1:1 screen is just ridiculous. Also, a physical keyboard that's actually slower to type on than a virtual on screen keyboard? Genius.
@dramdan110 жыл бұрын
***** Hi i am wondering what does your account picture is about?
@bilalha12310 жыл бұрын
Obviously there is a problem with movies, they're severely letterboxed. With a standard 21:9 movie, on a note 4 you'll have 23.8% of the screen blank. On the passport, you'll have 57.2% of the screen blank. Basically, on the 5.7" note you'll be viewing a 4.34" picture, but on the passport you'll be viewing a 1.93" picture. Are you happy watching a movie on less than 2 inches of screen space? I know I wouldn't be...
@daltonwilliams296210 жыл бұрын
4:3 is better for reading documents. So if this heavily geared for business use it the aspect ratio makes sense.
@bilalha12310 жыл бұрын
+Logical Reason It's simple math. 1:1 aspect ratio is 9:9 16:9 picture on 9:9 screen leaves 9/16 screen blank. 9/16 x 4.5" is 2.53" screen size on a 16:9 video. You're saying a 21:9 video is 3.5" on a 4.5" phone? Look at it logically. The video is more than twice the length as is item height, but for arguments sake let's say it's a straight 20:10, that's 2:1 on a 1:1 screen which means that half the screen is going to be letterboxed. You're either getting confused or you're not looking at the correct aspect ratio images. I agree that a 4:3 aspect ratio is better for browsing Web, viewing documents and reading, but a 1:1 screen is just stupid. A hardware keyboard is also stupid when you can type faster on screen. A large 4:3 ain't a bad idea, even 1:1 isn't too bad, but a big ass phone that could have had more screen space as opposed to a hard keyboard is a stupid idea.

This is a very interesting device. I didn't see this one coming from Blackberry. What I like from this company is that they are the only one who preserve the Full QWERTY keyboard at this generation where all of its competitors are touch screen. Ohh and this is an awesome review by the way Erica Griffin ^_^

You can hold the number key and use the keyboard to type numbers etc. You can scroll up and down in twitter using the N P and T B keys. There are still a bunch of shortcuts you probably still need to learn.

Using the Passport from when it was released so more then a week, about 8 months or so as only device. Erica did a general good challenge, not a deep review and missed a whole bunch of stuff like a detailed description of the Hub and what it does, Blend, FM radio, phone and speaker quality; docs to go, shortcuts, picture password and so on. Also, Erica also seems to have difficulties with opening the Hub from any screen. Well, you don't need to reach with your small hands to the middle of the screen, it works well from the sides 2, I just use my thumb, a 2 cm sweep and voila, you're in the hub. Even easier, just long press M and you're in the Hub. For KZbin and so on there are good and free alternatives. Also, use your non used fingers to support the Passport, I mostly use my pinkies in the middle, easier on the wrists and hands. There is so much more I could mention she didn't but that's not the point. It all depends on your personal needs and the Passport covers all my needs very well, that of the best communicator (mail,phone, social, etc). For videos or gaming I use stronger and larger devices than a smartphone anyway, any decent tablet, laptop, pc beats any smartphone in watching movies AND gaming so if other people use their smartphone for that, fine by me, I very rarely do.

black berry is the business mans phone, very good at multitasking and very quick at changing tasks, actual keyboard for emails and longer documents and very nice one handed use, a lot of these feature seem very office and fast pace lifestyle designed,
