My Thoughts On White Women Wearing Braids And Other Kinky Styles
White women wearing braids is a huge topic of conversation but is it a case of imitation being a sincere form of flattery or just plain wrong

I agree with you, we shouldn't be gatekeeping hair styles. That's silly. Tons of black women use Ayurvedic herbs on their hair and I never see Indian women checking us BUT we also aren't renaming the powders. I do have to say white women do tend to go the extra mile and rename and reclaim. That's where I think a majority of us have a problem, not that they wear the styles in the first place. At this point though we can't control what they call something so I think we need to just let them call it whatever, ignore them, and continue to refer to the styles by the same names we always have been using.

Everybody has a right to wear the hairstyle of their choice, this is ridiculous!

I agree! Those ppl that try to rename things steal from everyone not just us. They are just dishonest thieves I wouldn't take it personally.

You are right, I think the issue most of us have is the renaming and not so much the style itself.

@@ariannahawkins5945 and I can add to that, it took a long time for black women to really a chat and figure out beautiful great exotic access or hairstyles that they can relate to something that means something to them something that is cultural, for a long time they have been very controlled and how the where their hair to fit in to Western standards and beauty their hairstyles important to them it's fraternal its cultural it hair identity that represent them I don't want anybody else taking anything that doesn't belong to them because it's cute exotic or beautiful I don't like that.. remember, ROCK N ROLL WAS ONCE BLACK.🤔 protect your culture

This is an interesting topic, but so many other topics such as skin color, clothing, etc. the only opinion I have is that I feel not enough people wear and style themselves based on what looks appealing on them! People should wear hair styles, clothing, etc based on improving their looks. What I have a real problem with are those individuals who feel its ok to deny anyone a job, housing or the ability to enter programs based on their hairstyles. . . especially those styles that are natural for their type of hair. A good example is this country having to put into law "The Crown Act". Why did that become necessary??? because certain individuals denied Blacks a job, the ability to enter contest of any type based on their hair style!!! This is what I'm against. I don't care who wears braids, cornrows, twist and any other style determined to be BLACK! If it looks good on you have at it!

If braids, dreads and plaits are strictly for Blacks then I would have to change my hair since I have long relaxed straight hair and that is not happening. Hair is trivial, pay more attention to the things that matter. You know what is just for Blacks? Educating ourselves in STEM subjects, financial literacy and introspective growth. Those things matter not who or what is doing a hair style. Now let us see a race towards the Maths textbooks.

Well if white people are ABLE to wear braids I can't say a thing - We've been wearing their hairstyles for years - pressed, permed, etc. It's just recently that we have embraced the natural tight curl of our own hair and taken pride. There are some whites with hair as curly and some as tightly curled as ours. We are living in a time where all styles of clothing, shoes and hair are welcome for personal expression.

I don't agree. We've worn "their" styles because the slave masters didn't want to see our hair and wanted us to look like them. The pressing and perming are so damaging to our hair.

That's so true - we had to conform but now what? We have choices - we can go straight or kinky - whatever we want. The beauty of being a woman. We can be blond today with straight or kinky hair and next week have black hair down to our knees. It's a fun time for all women. I think whites wearing our styles is a sign of admiration. They admire and want what we have - the versatile hair, full lips, big butts and as summer approach, they will show admiration for our brown skin in tanning salons and with tanning lotions and we will show our admiration with long flowing locks that we may have to buy😁

Blacks have always worn their hair creatively and natural, they didn’t just recently embrace their natural hair texture. During slavery our ancestors were forced to wear their hair straight by the demands of their White slave masters; they planned to instill in our people to get them to want what they had and to be like them, and to make some Blacks feel superior to other Blacks and going against their race, which a lot of that is happening (read the Willie Lynch Letter, or information regarding Eugenics). I think you need to research Black History, especially during the period of the Jim Crow era. The Whites have always adopted our style of music, fashion, hairstyles, dance, etc., I’ve heard well-known musicians (Bob Seeger and Bruce Springsteen) say if it were not for Blacks, there would not be jazz, blues, R&B, dance, etc., Bob Seeger stated Whites would still be doing the Fox Trot. Country music was created from the blues. Our hair texture can be creative to any form of hairstyle and hold it well. Our ancestors use to braid guides in their hair to map out their escape from slavery. I just read an article the other day about a White elementary school teacher who had shaved the head of a seven-year-old Black kid because she didn’t accept him wearing his hair natural, and this is not the first time a White school teacher or coach of a team had cut off the hair of a Black student, and wearing natural hair just didn’t come about recently. Black women wore their hair natural all the time, until they got caught up in wearing wigs and weaves, something the White women had worn for centuries; and today more Black women are copying after the White women by wearing long, bone straight hair down their backs by the way of weaves and wigs, and are coloring their hair blonde more than they did years ago, but a lot of Black women are returning to wearing their hair natural, but for some reason can’t shake off wearing their hair blonde, and I must say, blonde hair looks better on our skin tone than it does on Whites, that is, if you have the skin tone to carry it off. Maybe, there’s a jealousy issue when it comes to our hair texture by the White people…IJS!

They never had hairstyles. Everything about the world dates becak to when Jesus and even before him. People in Egypt/Africa were black, braids, box braids, all OUR styles go farther back than white pople would like to admit. It makes me sick that black people dont see a problem with them wearing iur styles, then say we are wearing " styles" when they took styles and called it their own. Stole many cultured and called ut their culture. Cornrows is what got us out of the plantation, did you know? Cronrows were actually maps of wasy to get out!! And people call it just a style, uf it wasnt for a "style" black people be able to do half the things we do and have today. Its a slap in the face of our ancestors that we are just giving up our stuff and not protecting it. They're already claiming our music, our slang, the way we dress, they do black face, nowadays some white people are feeling kore and more comfortable with calling thier black friends the N word. We keep giving up and sharing, then we wont have anymore of our own culture to really cherish without them having it, shooo will we even have our culture. Woukd we even be able to call it Black Culture anymore. So yes I will gatekeep, because my history, my roots, my style is very precious and literally anyone on this earth woukd do anything to have and profit off of US, So yall please yall wake up and see the devil in sheep's clothing. Wake up!!!

@@ariannahawkins5945 what is all that energy really accomplishing though? A white person wearing braids doesn’t mean they are claiming it as their own or taking credit for it. That goes for anyone tbh. Do people actually post a picture of a hairstyle and say “ I created this it’s mine I’m the originator”? I would have a problem with that yes. But back to topic, let’s say you managed to accomplish banning any person that’s not black from wearing any hairstyle you deem not appropriate. What then ? And what about people who are biracial? Where do they fit In?

I have zero clue why its glazed over that the Venus statue from 30,000 years ago was found in AUSTRIA... Not Africa. Braids are not owned by one race, just as makeup is not owned by one race or gender. We do not give credit to any of the French men that wore makeup in French court, or the Jewish women that wore it in Egypt during the reign of the Pharaohs... Why then, is everyone so bent out of shape on a hairstyle? Its the silliest thing. As the video states, people may just like the look of braids, emulate the look or want to try something daring for them. Why does everyone care? I honestly think this just feeds into the "snowflake" attitude that has happened with the last 2-3 generations. Its NOT political or cultural at all. Its HAIR... Is it hurting anyone for me, a pale white girl with gray white hair to get box braids? Not in the slightest. In fact, I am spending my hard earned $ to support someone that is great at installing them for me. This will likely be a black woman due to the frequency of her installing them on both black women and men and white women an men... Be great at your craft. I utterly respect ALL people, so please everyone stop trying to find reasons for division. And remember to thank the Jewish women and French men at court, for makeup before you put it on every morning. ;)

Would take it and claim it as their own they're doing it now I see on internet forums. Oh, they are so traditional. So when people say that these grades don't belong to a culture, I'm sorry but the absolutely do. They've been in these ethnic group in Africa for thousands of years. I would like to believe it does belong to them. When you have black people who I believe want to be accepted by whiteness want to be accepted want close proximity come on you guys are young I'm an older generation black man, I know some of you guys grew up with white people you went to school with them. But keep in mind. Do not forget who these people are. They are the ruling class. These are people who take things they spent the past 500 years whipping off stuff, cultures, thrashing through it. Taking things away from people, look I know some of you guys admire the fact that other races of people are wearing seeing that come from this culture in this race, it must make you feel some kind of way, I don't know.. Important love the right I don't know what the case may be, but I don't feel that way, I have a sense of one-season protect culture, not give it away. Before people out there that's running around here saying that this does not belong to a particular race oh, it absolutely does, it was born in Africa out of these ethnic groups all over the continent, it absolutely belongs to them! That's all I have to say, because a lot of you guys do not understand the importance of protecting culture. Especially from a group of people that have a history of taking culture away from people. Got off a comic video section the other day arguing with the white guy who says that a white man invented hip hop. Made my blood boil. White guy said that white people created jazz music. You see, this is what happens when you let people dip in your culture. It doesn't end well!

you cant keep someone from wearing a certain hairstyle if they want to wear it regardless of what culture it may belong to. all the energy you put into getting upset about it is not accomplishing anything.

Yes people should do what they want, but can I also say that everything isn't for everybody no matter what race or background. I have seen very beautiful braids on some individuals. I have also seen others that looked like a complete disaster. Same for dreads. I don't think its a style that everyone should wear even if everyone CAN wear it. I have to tell myself the same thing. I know when something works for me and when it doesn’t. I think if it works for an individual, then they should do it. If it doesn’t fit then don't force it. And that is just my opinion.

Shoo they trynna brung back slavery abd if we just open our hands and let then take our culture, then they might just start back slavery. Aint nobody gone like that. Not everything needs to be shared with them and this is one of them.
