Really looking forward to the comparison between the Cinema 6k and the S5ii. I'd love to see a over exposure/under exposure test between the BMCC6k and the S5ii. The S5ii has base ISO at 640 and 4000, vs the Cinema 6k at 400 and 3200. Assuming they are using the same sensor, I'd be interested to see if those base levels are actually the same exposure and just numbered differently by the two brands, or if one gives you an advantage in dark lighting situations.

ISO/ASA sensitivity are the same regardless of digital image sensor or film emulsion "box speed" (sort of). If they weren't, the mathematics at the root of photography wouldn't be repeatable. The cameras just have their dual gain circuits wired for those sensitivities rather than something else.

This camera reminds me a lot of shooting with Leica M cameras. Lacking in so many ways (IBIS, low-light sensitivity, battery life), but the extra effort forces the filmmaker to learn the craft - like don't whip at 24fps, use cinema glass wide wide aperture in low light, and use a tripod - to get truly incredible results. Also, learning to light a scene is a wonderful skill that effectively supports this little beast. Great to see you list the shortcomings, but stand behind a great cinema tool. Thank you! ~Michael

You are the first person I have found that is planning on comparing it with the lumix S5II braw. Can you test it while recording outdoors to see how it compares since the Lumix has IBIS. It would be great to see the comparison between IBIS vs Gyro data. Also, I have not seen anyone try to take photos with this new camera and I often think if they will look better since it is full frame.

Just got Mine , been with BM since the 2.5k . Looking forward to putting it through the usuall tests , Just a note for anyone that's never shot film it's S35 mode is (what us old uns that had the pleasure to work on film call ) "4 perf" which is basically as much of each single celluloid frame you can expose . Got quite nostalgic when I swung on some of my ole series II Cookes !!

side note for the rolling shutter, you can turn on gyroscope data and fix the jello effect in resolve. If people aren't buying this camera for that reason they're missing out lol

In the color page it is possible to stabilize the rolling shutter with a setting of zero. Search KZbin for the process. It’s not the same as stabilizing in the inspector though. It does crop but only enough to cover the jello’s.

Nice review! Your issue with the native lenses focus, is not actually a camera issue, i think. It is that the lenses are focus by wire. In many pany cameras, i believe you can set the focus to "linear", and then these FBW lenses will behave more like a normal lens. But im guessing that the blackmagic cameras doesnt have this feature

Great video as usual. I am curious how bad the autofocus is. Could it be used to set focus initially? I'm curious to see how this camera compares to other cameras that claim higher dynamic range than this camera. I think other companies overstate their useable dynamic range whereas Blackmagic seems to stick closer to what the camera can actually do. So I think the S5iiX claims 14 stops, FX6 claims 15+, etc. and this camera claims 13. So a real world comparison with a subject inside with a window in the background might be cool to see. Or other real world high dynamic range scenarios would be good to see. These might be harder to do but I would like to see would be side by side image quality against Red Komodo X, Alexa Mini LF, Sony FX6, Canon Cinema, Z Cam, etc. I'm sure you will cover it but I am curious to hear your thoughts on what situations this camera is great for or who it might be a good tool for as opposed to the S5iiX or any other cameras.

Thanks for the video, great suggestion that memory card brand. I would like to see same scenario shot with 6K Pro and 6K Cinema. Colorgrade the shots in the way you like and in a way that you would like to achieve as a final look/style. How well those grade? Is one of them easier and more pleasent to work with? Or are they just the same?

Awesome video. I'm wrestling between this camera and the Panasonic S5iiX and I really want to know if the Sony FX3 is worth the extra $1000 compared to this camera. I'd love to see a moire and chromatic aberration test compared to 6K pro to see how the OLPF works (and if sharpness is affected). Do you think Blackmagic will improve the framerate options with a firmware update?

I'd be very surprised if blackmagic changed framerate via updates. But I very much expect to see this sensor move into a new body at some point and then I think we'd get better frame rates.

Won’t happen. It all comes down to the 'sensor clock speed'. The top speed is usually the top speed. It’s not usually arbitrarily chosen. This is why the higher frame rates tend to be found on more expensive cameras.

The fact that black magic have re-marketed it separately as a “cinema” camera comes with higher expectations for image quality and software features. The image is nice, but it isn’t different enough from the 6k pro (especially rolling shutter). It would be like if the fx3 had zero software features between the A7SIII. It’s been 2-3 years since the last colour generation. A “cinema” camera should have multiple codecs to choose from (even a LOG option). The audio options are very minimal, needs to be more options for tweaking audio input and frequency from XLR.

I had a 6k pro before and traded it towards an fx3 - found that I really missed the 6k pro and luckily I’m down with the guys at my camera store in Cardiff took it back and got the 6k ff (it’s on order) and the lumix which came with a free 85 1.8 and 300 off with trade in :D. I am eyeing a Lumix S 35mm for this camera when i get it but like you mentioned. The lenses need to be set to Linear Focus in camera. Do you think its worth dealing with until BMD sends an update? or just get a Cine Prime? @OBP

Would live to see this new full frame vs the 6K pro in real world terms and get your opinion on it, and similarly with the S5ii. I was bummed by the removal of ND's but then there is much less IR pollution on this model thanks to the OLPF. I've been pretty blown away with the ursa 12k footage I've seen, but have no need for all those resolutions and a lot of the features. I'm very curious and temped by this new 6K but I'm gutted to hear it doesn't include ProRes or H.265. Quite often I will need to share footage with another editor and a lot of them just don't want raw files to work with if it's quicker turnaround and/or need smaller file sizes.

Honestly, I just want to know what lenses from Lumix work I had a 6k pro but it didn't make sense to keep it because of the l mount lenses i have. I think it's a bummer to hear the manual focus on fly-by-wire is rough.

Interesting video… I cancelled my preorder for this camera. At first I thought it would be a good no fuss video camera. But the absence of built in NDs means it really will not be any more convenient than my other cameras. Also, given this is not a hybrid, I’d still need to take along a stills body. I really do wish BMD had redesigned the body, and found a way to include built in eVND. I guess will have to wait for the Panasonic S1HMk2 for that? Not bad footage for the price point, but the plastic build, awkward form factor and newly removed NDs took this out of the running for me. Nonetheless, I’ll be curious to hear how your get on with this camera.

An important consideration is that we can now share lenses between the likes of lumix and BM. Marry the lens date the body and all that. I think it's a very good time to be investing in L-mount lens with the Lumix and BM camera over the next few years.

@@OBP_ I agree. Lenses are SO much more important than bodies, and the convenience of having a common mount between your stills and video cameras is huge. Sony and Canon both do this well. I switched from shooting primarily Sony for many years to Canon because I had been shooting motion on OG Komodo and came to fall in love with not only that camera, but the RF glass. Nowadays I rock a pair of R5Cs and a Komodo-X, and I don't think I'd look back. Having one set of lenses you can use on all your bodies just makes life so much easier.

We need a firmware update to adjust for anamorphic from 0.5x to 2x. Btw you can let it looks like shot with global shutter by stabilize with gyro, even on 0% strength will do the job🎉

I can't help seeing this camera and feeling like a 4k is a better deal, or going sideways to the S5IIX that still gets you FF BRAW but with Autofocus, world-class IBIS, and stills capabilities for the same price.

It's a different tool for a different type of job to get a different look. If you can't see how this can potentially enhance what you're doing then it's definitely not for you. The S5IIX is a monster that you can't go wrong with and is probably a better camera for 90% of creators in terms of the trade offs

What's the 10% that the BMPCC gives at this point? Streamlined video workflow for more intentional video production? (Which I think is worth a lot, that's what makes Leicas such great photo cameras IMO.) That's the main thing I see looking at this cam. Dedicated video set up. @OBP Have you had an issues with Panny lenses as noted in the BH product page for the BMCC 6K? "Note: If this camera is paired with certain Panasonic lenses, images could be affected. Specifically, the Lumix S 24-105mm f/4 Macro O.I.S. and Lumix S Pro 16-35mm f/4 use a switch-mode power supply, which could radiate noise into the sensor."

Well given there is a lot of buzz around the rolling shutter "fix" that uses the gyro stabilization with out using the stabilization to fix the image skewing . I think it would come down to what is more important for a given shoot, lower skiew style rolling shutter or better AF. If a more global shutter style look with pans then the Blackmagic cameras are the better option, but if auto focus is the more important feature then the S5II is probably better.

Hi Have the P4K,P6K,S5 org with videoassist 12G. Love shooting BRAW,lately I shoot a lot with P6K rigged with 24-105 hand held run and gun slow mo etc..mostly music clip event shorts etc… I am really tempted with the S5iiX or S5ii,but then 6KFF was announced…still I have time till new year. Could be an alternative for my BMPCC6K combo…or my S5 combo with EF lenses and pana S35,s50… Hard to know thanks for your testing I trust your videos more than other maybe because your are not so hyped… Yours Fil from Birl

I mostly worried about the rolling shutter, Im looking at an Arri Alexa classic too, it’s limited to 2k and SXS hard drives but the low light is good and that arri color science is great. If the rolling shutter is around 18ms then I could use this

I was hoping the engineers would have tackled the linear focus issue with Lumix (and Sigma L-mount) lenses ahead of time, but I’m not surprised this has been overlooked. It’s not something which would naturally be in their wheelhouse. Hopefully that will change going forward. Dealing with the accelerated non-linear focus typical of stills lenses will be a pain. In fact, even for stills on my Nikon Z9 I’ve gotten used to the fine increments of working with long throws, especially for settings with exceptionally shallow depth of field. I also wonder if Blackmagic will partner with DJI the same way Panasonic has done so that the lenses can be controlled by the DJI LiDAR unit. Fingers crossed on that addition to the firmware. I know it would come in handy now and then.

You can fix the rolling shutters issue in Davinci Resolve by using the gyroscope effect.
