Looks good, Tim. Yes, it's your old friend back watching your videos again. But so you know, I wasn't watching any videos. I am almost ready to build my own tire hammer and my own press. So, yes, I rewatched your videos on the building of yours. Not sure when they will be done, but I will send you some pictures when they are. Take care my friend. Can't wait to see the knife you make from this.

Huh. I thought delaminations was the devil. Nice work! I remember you said you were concerned when you squared things - they get a nip and weird distorted pattern on each corner. I watched Shupar and he has a different square module for his hyrdaulic press that he uses to flatten the sides of the billet before putting it in the "tooth" module. This was I noticed his squaring is almost completely without nipping. He uses it in almost every video, but if you wish, I could try and find the one I saw and link it.
@BIGDOGFORGE4 жыл бұрын
That would be awesome thanks. And thanks for watching.

@@BIGDOGFORGE I did not find the exact video I watched but this one shows the special attachment shurap uses, at 1:55 here kzbin.info/www/bejne/kKOqe3-ro9V7eZY to make the billet a rectangular shape and then he squares it off with those "tooth" attachments. VERY sorry for using all the wrong words but I'm Swedish and not a blacksmith, sorry.

Lot of work for a mild pattern, plus if this is for a knife, the wrought Iron, plus the amount of heat during the forge welding would reduce the carbon....not sure how high the content would be?

What about the scale in the voids? How do you get the welds set?
@BIGDOGFORGE2 жыл бұрын
At the rite temp the scale becomes a non issue and its not captured between layer like in a knife billet the layers are round and push the scale to the sides as they flatten , kind of like forging welding motorcycle chain.
@d0sitmatr3 жыл бұрын
what sort of pattern do you think it would make if you cross cut the braid, stacked them with the cross cut for the pattern ?

I was just curious if a braided damascus, pineapple damascus, or square damascus pattern would still show up if the steel is used to make a knife or if the pattern would just be ground away and no longer be visible? Thanks for any thoughts or insight.

If you can't braid your hair, you might as well braid steel. Wisdom from Possum Lodge
@illya23484 жыл бұрын
Absolutely LOVE the pattern.....I can see the W1 and the Spring steel...but the wrought iron? Would that not leave some soft spots if you were using it for a blade? Just asking....i know the braid looks cool, but if the wrought iron ended up on the "edge" not the spine you would have soft spots on the blade, no? or did I miss something here? I would have thought braid the W1 and Spring, then laminate on the spine with wrought iron since it is not able to be hardened? (or was it Tool steel, and you were calling it wrought iron?)

Not to be that guy. But ANYONE seeing this im in desperate need for some wrought iron. I mean i can't find anything within 100 miles. I live in the south so any old wrought iron wheels or other tools are "precious" yard art so i cant get my hands on it. Im making something for my nephew who is sick (not dying but having a rough few weeks) so ill buy any for decent price! Not looking for hand outs just making a tough little boy a cool knife.
