Blackstar ID Core 10 V2 (Affordable & Good?)
The ID Core is a very popular amp, and the smallest one in the range is supposedly a very good guitar practice amp. It's certainly budget friendly, costing just north of 100€ (roughly the same in dollars I think). As ever, what's really important is sound. Nothing is worth it if it sounds like a pile of dog's droppings. Blackstar make a whole host of different amps, some of which I've reviewed. This is the affordable Blackstar practice amp in their range.
So, check out the video to find out if Blackstar have a winner in the ID Core. Enjoy!Check out my Patreon page for music and exclusives: / elmojk For official website, visit elmojk.com

The gear I most often use.
A Stratocaster of some kind, either an Yngwie Malmsteen Strat, or a custom Strat with a scalloped fretboard. For 7 string stuff I mostly use an Ibanez Universe.
A Marshall 1987x into a Marshall cab.
A Fender Yngwie Malmsteen overdrive, plus a Boss NS-2 noise gate, or a Strymon Sunset.
A Morley Bad Horsie 2 wah, and a delay.
An AKG C-414 mic for the guitar.
For acoustic stuff I use a Taylor 710 short scale thingy.

I got the 20 watt version of this and it is a capable amp, as you pointed out it could have done without a the Superwide stereo claim plus the dozen or so 'headline' claims it makes on the box & on the top of the cabinet make it sound really cheap and it's not, it makes an excellent home amp with plenty of features for the price I paid £124 last month & was well worth it.

I have one, and I think I was the one who suggested this amp a while back (so thanks for that!) and I think this one suits my style (higher gain, primarily rhythm) better than the Micro Cube, but I completely understand why someone would prefer that. It’s down to personal taste, but this has been my go-to recommendation for a “first beginner amp” for a while because it’s simple to use, feature filled, and even when you graduate to a bigger, better amp, its still something that fits on a coffee table next to a couch - which is where I have mine. It also doubles as a surprisingly nice stereo with the auxiliary input. Is it better than my Marshall DSL40C pushed with a Klon KTR? Absolutely not, no way, not in a million years. Do I still like jamming on the couch with it? Yes! Good demo, even if you came away with a different opinion of it (I’m so offended, btw). :P

Well I enjoyed another vid from this guy! As a first time beginner amp it sounds fairly versatile so I think it would be a viable option. Side note, it would be interesting to hear you demo gear using a guitar with an HSS set up. Though I know single coils are more your style. Just a thought.

Hey Elmo - I hope you have been keeping ok with the world as it is (Corona Virus, etc.)! I started my teaching with one of these amplifiers (I forget which exact model), and the tone was not the thing that put me off : it was the user interface. ONLY by using a laptop (yes - its one of those amps), can you access 2 important features : the 3 band EQ and the Noise Gate! EQ'ing the amp out of the box was not enough for me, as a single tone/ISF stack goes from left (sounding usable, but quite bright and scooped) to right (like a bag of farts). After the ID core, I switched to many other "affordable amps" for teaching (Marshall Code, Fender Mustang, Boss Katana, etc. ) before finally stopping the excessive swapping with a Spider Line 6 V30 (which currently lives in the boot of my car!). After I realised that choosing a budget amplifier was like choosing your favorite piss flavoured ice cream (cat, dog, human etc.) in regards to tone, I just went with the one that had the features I needed, a reasonable sound and was fully acessible without using a laptop. I can undertand why you are feeling tired half way ; its all the same sh**! So keep your sanity mate! I hope the cultic fanbases of many of these products are not triggering and preparing you to be sacrified... Kind Regards, Gabe
@MrPolevaulter
@MrPolevaulter 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Gabe! I hope you're well too. You're mostly right about that piss flavoured ice cream thing (had a good laugh at that too :D). I find it odd that Roland did the Micro Cube ages ago, and it's still the best thing out there (for me at least). One would think that the advancing technology would mean that we'd get something slightly better than what we're getting.

@@MrPolevaulterAppreciate the reply :) It is the inevitable "Upgrade" to everything; no business would stay afloat if they couldn't find a new way for us to keep buying their products. But I don't think its simply about making a "Better Sounding" product, as I think these companies are consistently trying to find cheaper and more efficient ways to , design, manufacture and market there products. The reality is things sound "Different" from year-to-year ; a word I think is more believable than "Better". Seeing trade prices fluctuate from year to year (from my time working at a guitar shop) due to inflation of materials and workforce costs, I have seen more and more budget guitar amplifiers ditching tactile and traditional Input/Output options (like FX Loops), analogue reverb (spring/tanks), and standard EQ (3 Band EQ, Presence, etc.) before replacing them with a small LCD screen and a mandatory USB/laptop connection to access everything ; simply because it is cheaper to produce! So lets just use whatever we can that actually allows us to make music ; tone chasing in the budget price range is madness. Even if its Line 6 Spider, Marshall MG, Peavey Bandit, Fender Mustang, Roland Micro Cube - its all the same s*** buddy! :)

I had one, the original ID:Core 20. After a while I got tired of fiddling around with the software to produce tones and effects. I was doing more of that nonsense instead of playing. It wasn't bad as a practice amp but just not quite there with overdriven tones but barely almost. So I sold mine and replaced it with a Blackstar HT-1R tube combo. I replaced the stock preamp tube and replaced the stock speaker with a Celestion. I use my pedalboard with it and things have been good.

About the "Wide Stereo".. as it may not sound that way coming from two 3" speakers in the amp, what about when you have it mixed into your DAW? Obviously you'd be able to tell in the mix that the sound was widened, correct?

This if you like heavier, “chug” style stuff or want a good clean with a lot of effects. Micro cube if you want something with a much better off-clean or crunch tone (but slightly worse clean and high-gain tones). Katana is kind of a different class of amp, it’s much larger and not nearly as portable, but does everything better than either of these amps (but at twice the price and five times the weight). I like the Blackstar as a couch amp, but I also have a “main” amp. If you were buying your “only” amp, I’d suggest the Katana.

id core 10 v2 and boss katana mini have many differences. Katana mini is an analogue amp, and can run with batteries as well . so u can practice it anywhere. its smaller in size so very portable and easy to carry anywhere. where id core 10 v2 is digital amp and do not run with batteries. being a digital amp, idcore offers usb connection with pc/laptop and act as digital audio interface as well meaning u can use it for recording ur guitar as well. You can install Blackstar Insider software in laptop/pc. It enable EQ tweaking options and access various patches. Look it up. so you can choose as per ur need and ease. Personally i think id core is better amp. comparing katana with Blackstar Fly 3 seems logical than to compare it with idcore 10. idcore 10 provide more features. and its more than just a practice amp. more like beginner to mid-intermediate aamp. hope that clears ur doubt :)

For a hundred bucks, this little amp is better than anything teenage me could have dreamed of 20 years ago. Edit* Without a 3 band eq, this little guy sounds a little muffled. Only after a year of ownership did I know the 3 band eq is accessible through the PC app, pretty lame Blackstar... but you can set it for each channel and it will remember even when not plugged into the pc. My THR also has features that are only accessible through the app. I really hope the industry sees how frustrating this is for users

I was going to ask you about the atomic amplifier. I swear. I'm considering it, and the headrush gigboard, and if all else fails I'll break down and get an axeFx 8 or something.. I have to use modeling for a few reasons. I like you prefer a tube amp. The clean sounds were ok on this amp, but like you, I didn't have the feeking I want to rush out and buy it.. I'm like you, I like 3 tones basically. clean, edge of break up, and lead with delay and maybe stereo chorus to thicken up the sound, and of course I love my bad horsie wah. I think you and I my brother are fossils and these digital things are taking over sir. I think features instead of sound seem to rule. Next the amps will make you coffee and find you a girlfriend because the nerds that like this stuff can't get out from in front of the screen long enough ti find a girl. 😂 Please do a review if the atomic. You already have it so easy peasy. 😛😁😀 Take care my friend and stay safe sir.

I had it, then sold and bought blackstar ID Core 20 which I have till now. Today I seen on facebook marketplace someone selling Fender Mustang LT50 for only £90. Without much thinking decided to buy fender as new is £199 in England. But man, omg I just played Fender Mustang LT50 today and I don't like it. Its got plenty fake sounds which I am not fan of. So I will keep my blackstar id core 20 and sell fender mustang lt50. Strange that more expensive amp is just worst in my opinion. Blackstar id core 10 or 20 is good bedroom amp. I just wonder is Boss Katana would by any better than blackstar id core 20...I might try Katana or Fender Mustang GTX 50. Or just buy some more expensive blackstar as they are good.

actually your wrong about a small amp not being able to make a stereo sound my man. Stereo effect is more than just two speakers playing the same thing. True stereo effect can change the sound stage, cancel things out. put things out of time a little, or a lot, all kinds of things, stereo chorus. all kinds of things. and the speakers dont need to be on two different sides of the room to do this. it can make sounds from one box with two speakers that a box with one speaker absolutely cannot do because it takes two completely seperate sounds. Its completely different than just simply two speakers playing the same thing
@MrPolevaulter
@MrPolevaulter 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think I said anything about two speakers playing the same thing, because that's really mono from two speakers. If I did say that, then I certainly didn't mean it. What I was talking about was a proper stereo image, ie. speaker distance from each other and the listener.
