Makes me wonder how often translators took "liberties" like that when translating for people who hate each other. Gives me an idea for a series or movie where 2 people who can't speak the same language and initially hate each other eventually become best friends because every time they talk, the insult each other but the translator alters every message to be more diplomatic. "Tell this ugly fuckhead that as soon as his business is conducted he is to leave my house or I'll have my guards beat him up and toss him out into the garbage." Translator : "Welcome to my home, I hope you had no difficulties getting here" Other person : "Horrible journey because I had to come here and talk to this shit stain. Tell this dumbass that he has a horrible home, no sense of style, and I can't wait to get far away from here." Translator : "Thank you for welcoming me here. You have a beautiful home. Shall we proceed with business?"

Actually... Writing a *brave* woman is pretty modern. For too long, bravery was a characteristic nobody associated with women, which impacted writing everywhere. You just watch movies/TV series from the 50s and earlier; the trope of the brave gentleman rescuing the helpless fair maiden was everywhere (a fair maiden who on top of being helpless often was hysterical from fear). Librarian here, occasional storyteller. You wouldn't believe the amount of traditional stories I checked looking for the ones in which the female main character *were not* a fair helpless and fearful maiden.
