Does this video finally put the "strong loft irons" debate to rest? Let us know in the comments!
@matthewhall23206 жыл бұрын
TXG Tour Experience Golf I’ve moved to MP18 SC from AP1. What I’ve found is the good strikes all go the same distance, with the expected drop offs on mis strikes. My old clubs I could go 10 yards long for no apparent reason. The only advantage I see for GI irons is you’re hitting a 6i loft with a 7i shaft length, but if that difference in shaft length makes a difference you need more practice or lessons!
@atomant8306 жыл бұрын
Very informative video, this comparison demonstrates the how game improvement tech can effect ball flight vs traditional blade build but this doesn't explain why manufacturers are calling the game improvement club a 7iron when they could have called it a 6iron and still had the same tech. Its that move that's deceiving. For the people who would say its because of the shaft length, there is usually only a half of inch difference between a 6i and 7i so technically if a high hadicapper needed the "so call comfort" of his 7i swing to hit his 6i all he/she would need to do is choke down half an inch (in other words it a non starter arguement). Having said that the customer needs to do his/ her due diligence and inform themselves so they dont get suck into this more club distance scam.

Yes. I watched another reviewer, who I like a lot, who never takes that into account. He will note that he doesn't like the lower spin numbers but the ball went 10 yards longer. Seems to me you should compare the two clubs that give you the same distance and then see if the spin numbers are still way off.

Ian, Matt, yet again another winner! You guys put out the most informative golf equipment videos on KZbin. Really appreciate all that you do. I recently changed my irons from Callaway XR OS to Mizuno JPX 900 Forged. I noticed two things right away; improved consistency and improved feel, awareness of where I hit the ball on the club face. With the XRs, without looking at the flight, I had a difficult time telling where on the club face I hit the ball. Also, let me thank you again for all the insight and understanding I've gained watching your channel. I'm by no means an expert but I'm a lot more informed than ever before!

Hey guys! Love your channel. Cheers from Montreal. I'm a 6.0 hdc and always played blades for the last 10 years. (Titleist 990, Titleist 690MB, Taylor Made RAC TP MB) I recently replaced my set for a newer Titleist AP1 716, and i wish to add my comments based on 10 rounds as I'm very happy with the change. Shaft S300 and grips are identical. 1) Loft - I like the stronger lofts, as I was able to add a W2 (52degree) to the P and W to bridge the gap between my 56 and 60. The 4 iron go as far as the 690MB 2 iron.. so I now carry 5 wedges in my bag. It took a few games to get used to the distance change but it's not a big deal when you play 2-3 time a week :) 2) Consistency - I feel that I can't miss a shot with my new AP1 716. For me, it delivers accurate and consistent yardage (forged vs cast) and i feel consistency has improved a lot. 3) Spin - For me, the spin characteristic improved, as it launches the ball a bit higher. The angle of descent improved also. So.. Personally i saw an improvement and i'm very happy. Still in my honeymoon ? Time will tell.

Thank you very much for putting together this video and providing this educational delivery. I am a 7 HCP and have shot my lowest rounds with blades, while going against the stigma that only scratch players should play blades. I tend to have a very high ball flight and the blades is the primary factor that brings that flight down for me, along with being paired with the appropriate shaft. Also the increase in spin allows for that lowered flight while still being able to stick greens. I am also a 1 to 2° upright player and the blades tend to allow me the best delivery with a square face and no tow droop. Another very large factor that is attractive for me is the thinner sole width of the blade. My turf interaction is 10 times better while swinging a blade over a very wide sole. Therefore, between the improved flight, proper spin, appropriate lie angle at impact, and improved turf interaction, it is a no-brainer that I play my best with blades. Although very difficult to explain that to others who do not research or even try blades. Keep up the excellent work, guys! Your videos are truly awesome.

The toe comparison was crazy and highlights really why we should be playing the most forgiving iron we can stand to look at. Both shots were 20mm+ on the toe, the PING retained ball speed and still flew 202y, the blade lost 7mph ball speed by comparison, only flew 189y, and even in the simulator that landed well short of the green (and wouldn't have bounced on in real life most likely).

Lots of great club data to digest in this comparison. Best point you hilighted was the importance of getting over your ego as to proper club choice regarding form (fashion) vs function (results). First time I’ve seen someone do this correct. Most dont use the same length shaft. I think most people would be shocked that their game improvement iron doesn’t actually give them more distance loft vs loft.

The thing is, that the overwhelming majority of weekend hackers simply don't know better. I've asked a couple of guys at my office what their wedge gapping and bounces were and they looked at me like I was taking the piss. Imagine asking them what shafts they had and where the kick point was 😅
@nufantbsnofx3 жыл бұрын
@@diogeneslantern18 you have no idea how many guys I see ask questions like what wedges should I get. Then half the people chime in saying 52,56,60 without knowing PW loft. I ask what’s your PW loft and they have no idea. So ask for model and give them loft which is now 43-46° 90+% of the time. The old standard 52,56,60 doesn’t help a guy with a 43-45 degree PW.

Hi. I recently started watching your videos and subscribed because I love your analysis and comments. I am a lifelong golfer, first bought a 7 iron at Kmart when I was 9-10 and made it to play on my high school golf team. Most of my life I played to a low-teen handicap, including a number of years at 10 or as low as 8. Now I'm 68 and don't play as much or swing near as hard, but I still love the game. Of course I played many blades over the years, never really liked the look of big game-improvement irons, and have played Callaway Apex CB forged irons the past 5 years with Recoil F3 shafts. I play now to a 15 handicap which of course I hate, but with less rotation from an aging back (like Freddie Couples but not as smooth) I know I am only fighting time. Anyway, I would like to change irons (just to change) and be fully fitted with whatever would serve me well now no matter what that might be. But I don't know where to go. I live in Indianapolis and believe you're closest location might be in Chicago. Around here, some Clubs have fitting facilities but I'm skeptical just like I am of Golf Galaxy just trying to sell clubs. There is a local Golf-Tech I understand from friends rigs you all up with sensors and films trying to change your swing, but I'm not sure that is in the cards for me. Anyway, have any suggestions on where to go or what to do or better yet what irons to change too? I would appreciate any comments you can give. Thanks, Chuck

Wow the toe droop is something I’ve thought I’ve seen myself but wasn’t sure if it was weight location or the longer blade length. But I have to play 2 up with my cavities vs standard with my blades. But the issue with the cavities is they are fit to my full swing, so when it’s time to do a 3/4 swing or 1/2 swing I don’t think the cavity droops as much because the swing force isn’t as high. And of course my smooth swings go more left because the lie angle and droop don’t match up leaving me with a slightly toe up position. Makes fitting for each club even more important. If you play cavities say 3-7 irons you may need slightly more upright than you’d need with your blade 8-lw because you have less toe droop and probably are manipulating the swing speed more on those shorter approach shots. Great video!

@glennwiebe51286 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with your assessment. From my own experience with blades vs cavities, this is the final nail in the coffin for me. Game improvement irons are too inconsistent primarily north and south. I've got to be sure that I can carry x yds even with a less than perfect strike. With a gi iron and the same less than perfect strike, I've got no idea if it's 5 long or 5 short. The manufacturers have sold us a bill of goods and brainwashed us into needing another set of clubs because we can't hit it far enough and that with exotic materials our mishits will be marginalized. From testors who have no allegiance, you find that strike is king. No amount of perimeter weighting will fix the fault. In fact, they (gi irons) actually generate more side spin (check into the D plane info). Couple that with "distance" balls, it makes bad go to worse. Blades all the way! Save your money and take lessons.

Really great content guys. I am new to the channel. It's very topical for me as I have finally found an independent fitter in my area of the UK, Precision golf. Their approach is very similar to yours. The additional benefit is my new golf coach just so happens to work from their studio every now and then. I was pulling the ball left even though I had worked on my swing characteristics, the pro, who doesn't fit or sell clubs thought it would be good to give the irons the once over for the new season. Well, it was firstly an amazing session and second, the lie on my clubs which were sold to me after a 'fit' as 2 deg flat were anywhere from 2 to 4 degree's upright. Bent the clubs and hey presto the ball flight straightened up. We also did some experimentation with the shafts and got 10 more yards. The clubs were MP18's. So the video you did on lie angle was spot on. Moral of the story get a real fit from independent fitters. If you are in the UK go to precision golf in Byfleet.

Great as usual! It's interesting to note that the launch was definitely higher on the GI club, but it also increased ball speed while maintaining spin. In all club review videos, blades consistently have less ball speed, but produce more consistent numbers in launch, spin, and especially distance. To me, consistent numbers are far more important to being able to play well, that and not lying to yourself about how far you can hit it!

That’s 5-6* too strong in my opinion, even in the game improvement class. I’m going to take a longer look at irons next spring to see if the player distance irons work for me which will allow me to get lofts back to a more normal degree while still allowing the proper distance for my swing (digging those Haywood signatures and sub70 699’s). Great vid, I’d love to see your take on how the loft gapping of a set has changed and it’s positive or negative effects. 2 and 3 degree gaps in long/mid irons and 5-6 degree gaps in short irons and wedges vs traditional gapping. Myself I see the loft changes as a gimmick to say “our clubs go further”. Trying to win the 6 iron launch monitor wars at your local big box store. Loft for loft a more truthful sell would be faster ball speeds and higher launch, but that doesn’t sell as well.
@clubchampionmedia6 жыл бұрын
You'll see more on set gapping and composition in future on the channel for sure Christian!
@kourt24696 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. I know the dynamics of how each club is swung can produce different dynamic lofts so a standard 4 degree gap might not be ideal, but surely the 2-3 degree loft gaps in the lower end of the set now days can’t produce ideal gapping. I think I’d rather have a 15 yard gap in my 3-7 irons and 10-12 gap in 8-lw vs 10 yard gaps in my long irons and 12-15 in scoring clubs.

Another great video. Half way thru this video it looked like loft really controlled most of the spin. These were two totally different heads and spun within a couple hundred rpm. Then Ian mentioned that the P790s were a low spinning game improvement club. What causes spin differences between two GI irons like the G400 vs P790s?
@clubchampionmedia6 жыл бұрын
CG location mostly Mike, the P790's don't have as low and far back a CG as the G400's. Two different design intentions though, P790 was designed to reduce spin and maintain good launch angles to maximize distance, G400 was designed more for maximum height for a player that doesn't hit the ball in the air enough.
@TZOID086 жыл бұрын
Dynamic Loft vs Static Loft also comes to light in this video. Matt had more shaft lean with the Miura blade producing 2 degrees less dynamic loft at impact. The analytics of teaching, and fitting with Foresight , Flight Scope and Trackman is fantastic.

Not only does the cavity back droop more, but the dynamic loft goes up because of the weight being further back. When you swing a club with a further rear center of gravity, that weight pulls on the back of the face just like toe droop, but it’s more life “face droop” which lifts that dynamic loft! That’s where the launch comes from.

The biggest thing for me comparing game improvement irons to blades and even clubs with small cavities is the accuracy with the shorter irons. I don't feel i can be as accurate with a chunky 8 iron in my hand as i can with a players club. That's why combo sets are becoming so prevalent and something I've explored recently. In a 4-5-6 sometimes even a 7 iron my goal is to just get on the green and id be satisfied with a 30+ foot putt for birdie. When i put an 8 iron or shorter in my hand I'm firing at the flag and if i leave 30+ feet I'm feeling disappointed.

This clearly shows that the difference isn't massive. People should play witht the irons they like! I'm sticking with my blades for sure!

Easy question: As the Hogan irons a few years back, why do the OEM manufacturers not just simply put the degree of loft on the sole of the club?
@MrSomeone5444 жыл бұрын
Spike Baduccino if you notice now and look they’re no longer following that idea. New clubs are being marked with the iron number. I’m sure they just received negative feedback about it and I’ve heard people complain that the lofting system is “confusing”. I know it’s a simple thing but there are some stupid people out there
@spikebaduccino66134 жыл бұрын
MrSomeone544 agreed! ‘But my 7 iron goes farther than your 7 iron’! Specs might show his 7 is nearly a 5 iron.......

Great stuff gentlemen! As a 17 handicap player who plays blades I really liked your conclusions. It's really sad that you're so far away though. I would love to get fitted by you. The fittings I had here in Holland where more marketing tools for selling clubs. Watching your channel though has educated me and helped me filter the information better. An MP 18 combo set with my name on it is being built right now in Scotland :)

Hey! You guys are amazing, making every fitter's job in the world so much harder as you set the bar so damn high. :D I love the interaction and discussion between you guys, Matt always leading with some really good questions, great stuff. This is the video I really wanted to see, "how do blades compare to game improvement iron when hitting the same distance?", I find the "you gain 10y" argument so stupid because I want to hit that green which is 170y away, it doesn't magically move to 180y when using different clubs. Also, finally someone (you!) shows that distance for distance the game improvement irons do NOT spin less, but about the same, explaining why many of the youtube pros testing such clubs can't see a disadvantage stopping the balls on green, to me it always looked like they actually have an easier time (steeper decent, same spin?)! The toe down lie effect on the game improvement clubs was pretty high, so maybe (after re-discovering the effect) you ought to have fitted the club to reduce the effect for better turf interaction and thus more consistency in the ping irons? Also, I wonder if what you classified some of the ping iron shots as "good enough" because of how forgiving it was? You definitely pointed some of them out in the video. So thanks for that comparison, looking forward to more! :) Maybe a video suggestion for this series: perfectly fitted super-game-improvement iron (the high handicapper versions) vs. Matt's favorite, perfect fit blade with the green at a constant distance? Cheers guys!

This is a great video, but also what's cool, is seeing how different Matt's swing is as opposed to now. In this video you can see his wrists hinging at the top which he doesn't do now!

I can definitely attest to the whole handicap/type of club argument. My putting sucks, but I have a F8+ driver that I can hit past 300 yards. And Fly Z+ irons that work with my natural draw swing. And I’m not a horrible ball striker either, and getting better every time I go to the range! Currently doing a complete refit on my golf bag and need to have my iron shafts swapped out for my new shafts I bought. Also got all new wedges as well! So hopefully this will also help some. But just because you’re a high handicap doesn’t mean you can’t play blades and vice versa.

I was also hitting a P790 7i the other day with my longest clean hit going 182 yards!

Cracking wee bit of content. Makes complete sense. Any chance you could go through a ball fitting for different swing speeds soon? Would be very interesting to see haven't seen a full fitting on youtube yet. Keep up the good work.

14:30 and the discussion re. cavity back having more toe down droop than the blade. Is that not just a featture of blade length design rather than the cavity back itself? In other words a long blade design (where the COG is further from the hosel) would give the same result as your cavity back did compared with the short blade design of the Miura you used?

Would it be feasible to do a PW from a set vs an alternative test. Like AP2 or MB vs vokey 46 or 48° and why one would opt for either?
@clubchampionmedia6 жыл бұрын
We will eventually! We don't stock pitching wedges from iron sets for testing in the shop, so we'd have to order in some stuff for that test.

the only problem i have is that high handicaps esp have trouble hitting the GI 4 and 5 irons which such low loft. but having a GI 5 and 6 to replace a more traditional 4 and 5 is a great idea for higher handicaps

Great work guys. Was very surprised with the consistency of the G400, for it being a chunky head it was very consistent in its distance. Some of these game improvement irons can be a little hot and the front to back dispersion is crazy. Myself i will still be playing a more lower handicap "players" club but shows this is a great option like you have demonstrated for the right person as the blades are for others. Keep filming can't get enough!!!!
@clubchampionmedia6 жыл бұрын
True! The G400's definitely seemed to be less prone to inconsistency with distance.

Great video once again guys. Super educational....really appreciated the chance to see the performance characteristics of the different club categories. From what was shown, it appears that Matt was able to experience the forgiveness capabilities of G400 when comparing off center hits. Net, they performed similarly but the G400 provided a bit more help for his swing. Is that fair to say?
@clubchampionmedia6 жыл бұрын
For sure Anthony, more mishit forgiveness in the G400 and it produced a higher ball flight.
@Disturbed71004 жыл бұрын
Seeing the launch 2 degrees lower makes me wonder if I would launch a blade lower than my current GI irons. I tend to add loft, but combined with the iron's design of launching the ball in the air makes me curious if a blade would launch lower, and potentially be more consistent. Of course the loft difference would be quite large, and mishits would be punished. Need to get a blade, probably a 6i to match my 7's loft.
@aprincey15363 жыл бұрын
Eliminated 40% of Miura shots(2), but why? That is supposed to be the test, a poor shot with a blade should be included, it would make the results so much more valid, as forgiveness is concerned. Just because all the G400 shots felt okay, doesn’t mean they were any less punishing than the mishit blades. 20mm off-center with a Blade would feel atrocious, but might be saved by the longer blade length of the G400. Also, with his swing speed, he can get optimal launch on the Miuras. Someone swinging a normal 7i speed around 80mph isn’t going to launch or spin the blade way enough to get great carry or descent angle. Good video, though I think something this debated needs 20 shots or more of each, with NONE eliminated to be really fair. We aren’t eliminating bad shots on the course, save for mulligans, of course. If nothing else, we should eliminate the purest of strikes, and then we’d really have some relatable data for the “Everyman”.

I was a 15 handicap who swings around the same speed as matt and gets similar distances. I couldn't hit SGI Irons to save my life. Something about how big and chunky they were just forced me to hit fat shots and reinforced the idea of swinging as hard as I can. I switched to blades and have never looked back. I can hit the ball more consistently now than ever. The thin look of the irons gives me confidence that I can get the club under the ball before I hit the ground and it helps me to not swing out of my shoes. I'm down to a 5 and still improving. I hated the look of the SGI irons and I hit them too high and couldnt be consistent enough with the distances that I needed to score well. It was also very hard for me to flight the ball for playing in the wind. I think the moral of the story with all irons is that you should play what suits your game the best.

Really enjoy this channel and this video is no exception. I really have learned so much from you guys. I definitely know so much more about equipment and fitting and actually sound knowledgeable to my playing partners and employees at Golf Galaxy. What I really want to know about blades vs cavities is would a 8-10 HC like me who games MP18s really benefit from a cavity specifically off center-hits. This can only be learned from a whole bunch of disbursement data from off center hits during real world testing. This is nearly impossible to pull off but I would really love to see it.

I'd love to see a video on your takes regarding those of us living in places plagued by high wind, and whether a higher ball flight is still beneficial, or a hindrance. Or if it should even be a consideration.
