I used to have a Benchmade Model 42 and loved it. Unfortunately they discontinued it. That was the only bali on the market with a spring loaded latch. Why have companies moved away from that design? It was so comforting to know that the latch wasn't going to get in the way of the blade

So I only got into flipping a year ago but from what I understand, the balisong landscape has changed a lot. Most flippers just remove latches because even the spring loaded ones weren’t Ideal. You see, while the latch no longer got in way, the weight of the latch on one handle made the knife feel unbalanced. So we just take em off entirely so manufacturers don’t bother engineering something most people will take off and toss in a box anyway. And most people who edc, lock the knife in the open position so they didn’t need a spring latch

I’m not sure about balisongs, but I know Michigan lifted the automatic ban; however, Michigan law states “ a knife over 3 inches with illegal intent” . I wanted a lucha till i read that the lucha has bearings instead of washers. That turned me against it. I'm currently looking for a decent trainer that'll last and not break. Easier said than done though.

@@StingofTruth I haven’t heard anything bad about bearings, just that it’s a matter of preference and I’m so new I have no preference. What I know is that flytanium makes replacements for the lucha and they come with buschings I believe. It’s $100 more dollars but that puts the lucha at ~$220 and rivals $300 knives. Figure I’ll upgrade the handles later and bought a cheapo but well reviewed trainer on Amazon.

@@okamic1750 yeah I'm blown away at how expensive balisongs are. Most have low grade steel blades like 420, 8cr13mov, 440c... For the price of a lucha it oughta have at least cpm s30v blade steel. The trainer price is ridiculous. Not to mention material designs across the board are crap. Hardware should all be hardened tool steel to protect from stripping and add durability. Bearing construction allows for smoother operation, and less play in the handles but bearings do blow out and are more likely to cause catastrophic failure. Personally I'd want bushings and a combo of teflon and phosphor bronze washers. G10 overlay with a light texturing on 303 steel handles. Just looking at current balisong construction has me blown away at how underbuilt and overpriced they are.

Budget and legality are going to be important. I like having a knife that’s easy to open and close one handed, and with my budget and state laws I carry a Microtech OTF. That’s expensive for a lot of people, and some states don’t allow automatic knives, so that won’t be a good choice for everyone.

You can’t carry balisongs in most places but in my experience as long as you aren’t flipping them around anyone the police won’t give you a hard time. I’d recommend the kershaw lucha one of if not my favorite blade. Very sharp though

Thankfully otf's/switch blades and Balisongs are legal in Florida and I believe they are all legal in Georgia as well as and some illegal knives in said state can still be legal if you have a concealed carry lic.

Buy a trainer to see if you have interest in the hobby. I'd reccomend something cheap like the Nabalis G10 on Amazon. If you decide that you have interest and want to spend more money then buy a live blade later. Before buying a live blade, just be sure to see that they are allowed

That's not how you find a balisong's balance bias. A balisong is neutral balanced when the blade weighs the same as ONE handle.

Some knives like the Lucha come with latches but lots of flippers prefer latchless handles and will buy different handles or mods to remove them

If you intend to flip them, latches tend to throw off the weight, hence why people take them off, but some do have latches at stock
