That was a great job on that blade. A real pleasure to watch your work and a fantastic outcome. It's always a pleasure to watch a bladesmith who actually forges from scratch start to finish instead of just cutting something out with grinder. Thanks for sticking to traditional methods.

you have a large wheel on the grinder. Have you ever thought of grinding with the blade facing like IO instead of -o ... if you under stand what that means. more like walter does, or like what you do when buffing.

I like this knife, are there any types of steel you would recommend avoiding as a beginner? tricky heat treats and temp ranges and so on?
@andrewhanowski96017 жыл бұрын
Hey Michael, yes. 1095 and 52100 can crack very easily when quenched over there proper temp, and can get bad stress fractures if you hit them too cold. I reccomend for you, 5160, o1, and 1084 for a good place to start. Do some googling to read further on each type of steel, as there all different when it comes to quenching and all that.

What oil do you use for quenching o1? I use mineral oil for leaf spring steel I salvage but i don’t think its a good oil for o1 tool steel
@tofanedward90496 жыл бұрын
alec kohl it is a good oil for quenching most steels including O1 and 5160(spring steel) but I would recomend you to use vegetable oil because mineral oil releases more toxic fumes.
@suburbanknife-maker91947 жыл бұрын
This is great... I've heard some smiths say O1 is a bitch to forge...and this video proved it! Awesome job though man, the end result is a fantastic blade.

If i only have a metal file how do you file the knife down when its heat treated if the file just skidds off? You used a belt sander but i dont have one. Does anyone know a good way?
@dahoff637 жыл бұрын
You should get the shape of the blade before you heat treat it. Unless you mean the part after he hardens it, at that point he only sanded the scale off so he could see the color of the steel. You don't necessarily need to do this part unless you're using a torch like he did.
@gagewaller17983 жыл бұрын
can you make a video on a kukri
@Grrxmistress7 жыл бұрын
When you tempered the knife, how were you able to tell the spine went to a blue oxide color? Is it visible on the forge scale?
@andrewhanowski96017 жыл бұрын
No it isn't visible thought he scale. I cleaned the top of the spine and thats how I seen the color. If you wire brush it before tempering you can see the colors on the forged flats as well. As long as thers no scale In the way.

Help a newb! Why forge O1 and not just use stock removal?
@andrewhanowski96016 жыл бұрын
Forging increases the strength by refining the grain structure of the steel. It compacts the grain and all around makes the steel stronger. This doesn't matter TOO much with knives but for example, Crain hooks HAVE to be forged or else they will break. A stock removed sword would be weaker as well. You should do some googling to read up more about the grain structure and forging. Forging can also be faster if you know what your doing and cheaper. And plus, you can't get that cool finish on the flats with stock removal! (the part of the knife above the bevel, where it's textured) anyway, hope this helps! And good luck!
