Mike's explanation about nuclear missiles is generally correct; there's a primary explosion that facilitates the supercriticality of nuclear material. Destroying the missile would probably scatter some radioactive bits, but that's preferable to an unwanted detonation. After I watched this movie, I came away with one major thought: Tommy Lee Jones would have been an excellent Joker. Also, Colm Meany in the Hall of Fame when?

Remembering your first film experience reminds me of something. What is your most awkward experience or memory of seeing a film in theaters? Mine is seeing the very rated R film Basic Instinct in theaters when I was 12 years old, seated in-between my mother and grandmother! I was there more for the mystery of it, but being a prepubescent child the other stuff didn’t hurt!😜 In hindsight I realized how wild and controversial a decision it was until I realized they took me to every movie I wanted to see because they weren’t sure I would live to adulthood because of my severe & chronic sickle cell anemia. I was in the hospital more than I was out for a long period there and I grew up watching film and tv as a coping mechanism. It’s what made me a cinephile at such an early age, but that particular theater moment is seared into my brain!

I've been trying to figure out what movie I saw in theatres first, and it was either Song Of The South or An American Tail. I have a feeling it was Song Of The South first, but both were released (or in the case of Song, re-released) on November 21st, 1986. I would have been 3-years-old at the time.

Why the cruise missile can be shot down without the nuclear bomb exploding: So pretty much every nuclear weapon you will ever fictionally see is a plutonium implosion bomb. They have a sphere of plutonium at their centre, surrounded by explosives (called lenses in this application). The terrible kaboom happens when the lenses go off with very precise timing, so that the plutonium is compressed. When this happens, you get the chain reaction that causes the plutonium atoms to fission. Now there's a lot of reasons why the implosion bomb design is universal, but one of them is that this precise timing can not only be altered for more or less energy (if you google dial-a-yield in this context, you'll see the 1950s-ass oven rheostats the USAF used to set such things) but also because this reaction, by its very precise nature, is in a properly designed bomb is almost impossible to set off accidentally.* In the movie, the conventional explosives of the warhead might be set off, but without the precise timing, it would at worst scatter the plutonium pit around. As for detonation, nuclear bombs being used are usually set to explode on the ground (IE a ground burst) or an air burst - usually the bomb has its own sensors for detonating at the proper altitude. If that cruise missile got its navigation wrong and smashed into a sea cliff, there would be a conventional explosion but no nuclear one. *I'd be TWENTY CANADIAN DOLLARS you've seen Dr. Strangelove; you may remember when James Earl Jones is setting the nuclear bombs to be ready to fire. At one point he turns a little dial from EXPLODE [no] to EXPLODE [yes]. Well, if you google the Goldsboro Incident, a B-52 got into an accident while refuelling in the air over South Carolina. Crashing and exploding, the aircraft released a nuclear weapon, and unfortunately due to design flaws, two of the three failsafe devices failed, without only that third failsafe we see Jones set working. Had that fifty cent lump of 1950s electronics failed, when the bomb hit the ground it would have exploded, all 3.8 megatons worth. (The atomic bomb used on Hiroshima was ~15-19 kilotons [kT], and 1000 kT is one megaton, and you can see that would have been real, real bad.)

My first movie memory is getting traumatized by seeing an IMAX movie about the Grand Canyon where they depicted the flooded river raging. Then after that, my next memory is my dad having to take me out of a Goofy Movie because the scene in the river triggered my trauma. Then several experiences of being too scared of theaters to even go in. Finally, I became determined to watch the new movie musical adaptation of one of my favorite movies (I watched a lot of VHS and DVDs): The Producers. I was able to go in of my own volition and watch the whole thing. After that, I was basically cured of my theatrophobia, more or less . I joined a film club in college. Now I'm a projectionist and I love my job.

Great episode, could see Segal movies making a return sometime because they are just so goofy. I also believe Mike was correct about the nuclear bomb. There are a variety of ways nukes can be set off, but pretty much all require something quite specific to occur to cause the material to go critical and have a chain reaction start. Something else blowing it up early would not likely cause the nuclear chain reaction and would instead just blast chunks of plutonium and metal around

The first movie I ever saw in the theater was the Disney animated version of Alice In Wonderland. I may have been all of 4 years old. When E.T. came into the theaters I was around 7 or 8. My mother and father took us to the theater in Meadville PA., at some point I became frightened enough by the drama of the movie that I needed to sit on my dad's lap and be held there in his arms to get through the film. My sister was really too little for the movie so my mother took her out to the lobby. I vividly remember how completely terrified my little sister also became during the crystal gazing ball scene and the flying monkeys when The Wizard Of Oz came on TV that year. I think she was about 3 at the time and it was all just too much for her. Of course now we're in our 40s and she loves The Wizard Of Oz. I've only seen E.T. once. That day on my dad's lap in the theater. I suppose I could watch it again, but I don't want to spoil my very cherished memory of time with my dad.

I have been racking my brain for a long time as to what my first movie in a theater was, and I think the earliest I can remember was Superman Returns. I would have been about 7 so it seems to check out to me, although I remember being 5 and my mom promising to take me to see the SpongeBob movie and after we ate out that night her deciding at dinner that we actually weren’t going to the movies anymore, to this day I still feel a little robbed 😂

Watched this way too young, but all I remember was how stupid the microwave bomb was. Also, young Tuco Salamanca; he loves to cook! To answer Matt's confusion about shooting down warheads: a nuclear explosion (reaction) must be triggered, it's not about combustion. All that got exploded when the missile was shot down was the rocket fuel, and the radioactive mass (uranium, plutonium etc) was not critical.

Hey, I love the show. I am not sure if should be writing this on here but for a Seen it pitch or review suggestion. Have you seen my favourite film "The Cook The Thief His Wife and Her Lover". It is a cinematic masterpiece that captivates with its exceptional art direction and symbolic storytelling. The use of vibrant colors and evocative set design not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also serves as a powerful metaphor of the inequalities and corruption of Thatchers Britain enriching the narrative with layers of meaning. The oppressive and decadent atmosphere within the restaurant mirrors the socio-political climate of that era.

It was being rereleased to theaters just before Empire came out, so I got to see both in a short period of time. I think it's why I'm not so disappointed in the other trilogies. There's no way ANYTHING can compare to Star Wars on the big screen for a six year old, so I never went in expecting them to. Seagal really is one of the most baffling movie stars in history. Almost all his movies suck, he can't act, he's not charming and his brand of martial arts isn't particularly cinematic. He got famous between 88'-93' in this exact tiny window of time where shoot em' up action cinema was king and people needed their action movie fix in between Stallone and Schwarzenegger. Then Jurassic park came along and changed blockbusters into effects spectacles and demand for the B-tier action movie filler that Seagal starred in dried up and by the end of the 90's the dude was just the butt of jokes. Under Siege was about as good as it gets for a Seagal movie and Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey are 90% responsible for it being memorable.
