Ran out of fuel going downhill at around 1/4 tank of diesel. Couldn't start her up even after loading 5 gallons into the tank. Saw posts recommending popping fuel caps, removing injector lines and nearly had an anxiety attack. Then I watched Aspie here say don't do none of that nonsense, just purge with the shrader valve. Was able to get her running without having the wife come out and crank ( didn't know about the starter solenoid). Aspie I wish you lived near Ohio, you saved me a tow truck and a repair fee. Good job. These motors pull hard and run a long time as reliably as an anvil. Keep it up and stick with it. These IDI’s are old but it’s a duty to keep the old iron going in the age of electrification. Eventually these antique diesels will be working examples of museums on wheels. if you respect the limitations they will reward you with years of heavy service. if you expect the truck to keep up with a new truck, you better start budgeting for a new one now.

hey bro, thanks for the video, from australia! been trying to work out how to bleed these trucks for over a week. after changing my filter and bleeding the air the truck wont stay running, and will start to sputter and stall out after a couple of minute, at first i thought it was the shrader valve being old and damaged, so i replaced the core, and it still continues to do the same. cant for the life of me figure out where air is getting into the system as the only thing i touched was the filter, and the shrader valve.
@worthshop2 жыл бұрын
Fuel tank selector valve is pretty notorious for getting old and leaking. Also the pick up tube in the fuel tank is a pretty common area to suck air in if the tank is not verry full. Hope these ideas help get you in the right direction to diagnose. I would try running the lift pump supply into a gas can full of diesel. See if the problem persists. This will tell you if the issue is before or after the fuel lift pump. Thanks for watching, good luck with your project. God bless.

White smoke is usually coolant... Hopefully not a head gasket or cavitation. But test the lift pump by pushing in the sgrader valve on the filter head while cranking the engine or when engine is running. Should have a pretty good flow of diesel. Injection pump will usually start cold but not hot.

Timing you can either buy the timing adapter, find someone that has one to help you, or set timing by trial and error. Adjust the pump about a dime width at a time. See if it runs better or worse. If I want to bleed air, I leave the key off. If I want it to start, I turn the key on. This method is not going to get all the air out of the lines. Never found getting air out of the lines to be important on a idi. They will start without bleeding all the injector lines.

What if I don't have enough ATF on hand? Can I do ATF and diesel? Seems logical I could since they will be going to same place. Been trying to get my 7.3 idi started that's been sitting for almost 2 years. Just bought new fuel filter. Reason it has been sitting is I took it to a guy to change glow plug relay because he said he knew EVERYTHING about them! He put in new one and right there I lost GP warning light, as well as fuel pump solenoid. I hooked toggle switch to fuel pump solenoid or relay, whatever it is and drove it hoke since it was warm. Then I used block heater to keep it warm over next several months until that went out. I can't figure out what happened. Every diagram I come across show 2 yellow wires from starter relay connected to hot post on relay, however I don't have 2 yellow wires anywhere to attach to it. It just has one bug red one. Then a double red with stripe connected to post immediately to its right (looking from grill area) ... all the other wires from controller and harness seem to be connected in the correct spot as far as i can tell. F if i know 🤷♂️

It probably has an electric fuel pump because i ran a new filter in it with straight 2stroke oil and it ran zero problems which is pretty strange. usually ive seen these struggle once they suck air in
@worthshop Жыл бұрын
Deleting the fuel heater is very common. Not something I'd replace. They are prone to leaking and causing air intrusion. I would replace the Schrader valve though. Get another Schrader valve to put in. That is the best place to check for fuel pressure, fuel flow, and bleed air after filter changes etc.

I had an issue with my 94 IDI after replacing a fuel filter because it was leaking at the top and then after 40 miles my truck died. Sometimes air and sometimes not. After my mechanic did a pressure test he said the fuel pump was bad. He wants to replace it with an electric pump. Any thoughts on that?

Would it be the same if the the injection pump is new and ran for a couple miles then shut off and not start back up
@worthshop9 ай бұрын
First thing I would check is if you hooked the electric plugs up backwards. One wire is constant power with the key on. The other looses power once the engine warms up. That is the high idle and timing advance. If you switched them or git them wrong the engine will shut off once warm.

Is your injection pump fuel shut off loosing power? You might have the electric connectors backwards. One shuts off as the truck warns up for high idle and timing advance. The other needs constant hot as long as the truck is running. Pretty common people can confuse the connectors.

@@worthshop I have replaced the fuel filer and now replacing rhe lift pump I would like it to be able to drive even though it looses power to the repair shop....maybe time for me to sell the darn thing

@Melvin Paul DO you have any moisture around the return line caps, or fuel line fittings? Air getting in the fuel system is a pretty common issue.

Hey Aspie, i've been dealing w a air intrusion on my 92 7.3l and prior to me replacing the FSV/injector return lines and a couple other rubber hoses i finally got my truck to start and now it idles very nicely but I test drove it yesterday and it died on me after about 1000ft. I'm wondering, when i bleed my schrader valve diesel is pulsing out of it. I dont have a continuous stream of fuel at all. DO you think my mechanical lift pump is failing? after my truck stalled I took the fuel filter off and it was a bit low so i refilled it and now my truck starts up easy again so I think i'm not getting enough fuel pressure up from the lift pump... but wanted to talk to more experienced folks before i spring for an e pump. thanks for all ur vids!

Pulsing fuel flow at the Schrader valve is pretty typical. Does not really indicate a weak or failing lift pump. They do not produce a solid steady stream, but have a pulsing stream by design. Have you replaced the fuel filter? Plugged fuel filter will be partially filled when you remove it. If you decide to switch to an electric fuel pump I recommend the Facet duralift seachoice pump. I have an older video about doing the swap. Will be doing another soon on my race truck build. Thanks for checking out the chanel, good luck with your project. Yo Aspie, we're stumped on an air intrusion problem and would be happy to pay for your expert review. I can describe it via email pretty well and we could schedule a call or vid chat. I do all the common digital payment methods. I've got 3 idi's we're always turning a wrench on so your channel is a treasure trove.

@Stone Bridge Comment on my video, explain the issues and I will walk you through some of how I diagnose and narrow things down. Or look me up on Facebook, message me on messanger. facebook.com/robert.meader.503?mibextid=ZbWKwL

My issue is no fuel press to pump... suggestions?
@worthshop Жыл бұрын
Are you getting fuel at tge Schrader valve on fuel filter? Arc across the starting solonoid on passenger side fender. Turn engine over and press in on the shader valve should have fuel flowing out.

@@worthshop very little.. then nothing..
@worthshop Жыл бұрын
@jamesbuck3818 I would test start with smelling your oil. If it smells like diesel and is thin your mechanical lift pump diaphragm is ruptured. Replace the lift pump. Next I would run a hose from the supply side of lift pump into a can of diesel. See if it has pressure then. If it does the problem is somewhere in tank switch valve or lines. If lift pump doesn't pull from can, lift pump is bad. Let me know what you find out. I will continue walking you through additional diagnostics

1999 f 350 dont have valve, just replaced lines from bowl to heads and it runs bad now....anyone know the fix ?
@worthshop Жыл бұрын
99 is a powerstroke engine not idi. Try searching for powerstroke videos. I am not that familiar with them.
@CommieHunter7 Жыл бұрын
Yeah what are you doing when that doesn't work. I have plenty of fuel pouring out of that Schrader valve, and the pump is not pushing any to the injectors. I have one injector off and it never puts fuel out that hard line. I don't know how to get the pump itself filled back up with fuel
@worthshop Жыл бұрын
I have never had it not work. If I was not getting fuel through the injection pump I would check the fuel shut off solonoid on the injection pump. Make sure it is getting power to it. Then make sure it is clicking when it receives power. If it is not getting power or not clicking it will not be allowing fuel through.
@CommieHunter7 Жыл бұрын
@@worthshop you were right. After I double checked everything else, I was like "gotta be the fuel shutoff solenoid". The wire had slipped off. Put it back on and two cranks she was running. That took forever to find.

You never had to loses up the injecter lines to bleed the air out, you just did it thru that valve.
@worthshop Жыл бұрын
Yes, owned around 10 idi trucks. Never open injector lines to bleed them. Done all kinds of repairs etc. Just bleed at the Schrader valve. Thanks for watching.

That is odd, I had a 1988 international 1600 tow truck with 7.3 and it had a Schrader valve to bleed the system. I would look into adding one. Install a filter head off a ford truck would be my suggestion. Make things way easier on yourself in the future. Good luck with your project, and God bless.
