Depends on the final intent, the complexity of the model, and if seams need to be in a specific location. If you just need to get a relatively accurate UV projection for texture painting, this can be a great way, but it can also introduce seams if you are relying on an existing texture or know that something will cross such as a procedural texture

Press tab, press L , Press X ..Press U... thats why i dont linke blender, thousands of buttons and none that are really needed.

Yes, pressing keys in software can be confusing. In Maya the sequence would be RMB to enter marking menu,, Ctrl+Shift+A to select all, then delete key to delete ... all software has lots of buttons

@@WhatMakeArt Well its not the buttons that are there, but that are missing, hiding such things in submenus only popping up by pressing a key is a novelty of blender. I dont understand why they dont include those simple functionalities right as button or dropdown menu in the UV view workspace.

Good question, when you want seams in a certain place, when you don't want so many pieces, when it is a predictable shape like a geometric one, when you want to control the shape of the UVs for more efficient texture packing are all reasons not to use smart UV project I'm Blender

@@WhatMakeArtmy goal is to make meteorytes, one in particular is hollow and have multiple entrances for player to enter. Problem is for what i see, is that if i make multiple islands in uv map, it will have nasty texture tilling lines where the islands are separated. It won't be seamless texture on meteorite

Then it may make sense to make some seams and then UV unwrap it in the manual way to avoid any texture problems where people will see it, you can place the problems that will be created with pinched textures then at other places where people won't be looking

Mine won't show the current texture that is mapped. I put a texture on it in blender 2.8, copied the tree mesh, armature and leaves and particle system stuff INTO Blender 3.5.1. It all came over perfectly using copy/paste (append did NOTHING) so I click on the TRUNK to select the tree mesh. Go into UV editing.... nothing. I select all verts, all faces, nothing shows up in the left window. I click every image icon and the tree bark texture is not listed as an option. I am so baffled by UV that I have no idea how it works or why it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. Any ideas? I tried smart uv project.... it still showed nothing in my left window where it should show the texture and UV coordinates. heeeeeeeelp.

Hard to say without seeing the file or mesh, is the particle system baked and converted into a mesh?

@@WhatMakeArt I think the only mesh is the tree trunk and branches cuz I converted to mesh and then copy/pasted that from blender 2.8 to 3.5.1 just to get that tree model INTO the blender I'm using. So, it's probably just my ignorance on how to get around in this UV world. That's prob the most confusing thing right now to me so don't waste time on me, I'll watch some more tutorials on UV and unwrapping and swapping images and all. thanks!!!!

I'm sure you will figure it out, make sure you have everything selected for smart UV unwrap, if it is a complex mesh it may be too much, good luck with the project 🌲🌲🌴🎄

@@WhatMakeArt thx. I don't have a particular project going or in mind. I was just trying out a few things like mtree and addons. modeling. just watching tuts and trying stuff. I do have vague ideas. fantasy scenes and horror etc but nothing in particular. Sometimes I pull a material from blenderkit, add it and it just isn't the right scale or doesn't map well and then I think, go to shader editor and I can fix scale. ? or maybe I should be going to UV to fix scale. ?? Anyway... my main prob is I am spread thin and it's hard to remember all the shortcuts and stuff. I spend 3 days trying to make a geometry scatter system then that's 3 days I wasn't modeling and so... all that gets foggier. oh well.... good thing I don't have to do this for a living. :)
