Bletilla striata-care, blooms and seeds

Bletilla striata-the Chinese ground orchid. Hardy down to freezing temperatures and up to 100 degrees F, this beautiful orchid tends to be too seen as "too easy" and forgotten in the orchid world. Perfect for beginners, the Bletilla striata is affordable, easy to grow and is a wonderful addition to any collection. Seeds do not need to be grown in vitro.

This is great info O ought a pot of them they are so pretty they have some green seed pods on them. I maybe able to repot them in Autum/winter They are so so pretty

These are much more cold hardy than you have mentioned. I grow them with very little mulch in zone 6 at the southern tip of Lake Michigan.

I have a white variety that has been growing in the ground for over 5 years on the east side of my back deck in zone 6b. Winter here occasionally get's down to -0 F.

I am waiting on my order of Bletilla Yokahoma I'm sure I miss spelled that but it's a lighter purple but it has a yellow throat and love that contrast . Thank you for posting !

Yep, I grow this in the ground. It is a deciduous plant. Mine is shorter though. I would be surprised if the seeds germinate unless you sprinkle them at the base of the mother plant as they need mycorrhorizal fungus to germinate. There may be some already in the mother plants roots but there won't be any in a separate seed tray. Good luck and nice plant!

+Gardening at Douentza I don't think I could handle having more seedlings anyway. They require too much. I sowed some seeds in a jar and only some survived, but I can see little tiny growths. Of course it took a whole year. So much work and not worth it. That's why I don't even collect the seed pods anymore.

bletilla striata is one of the very few orchids, which you can grow without much hassle in ordinary soil, without a symbiotic fungus. i sowed mine on a paper towel ...

Hi! I have them in a mixture of peat moss and fine bark chips. About half and half.

I grow mine in "good" dirt. Lots of mulch mixed into the soil. Most prolific plant.

I've been to a handful of nurseries and never see any terrestrials besides Paphs :(. Where do people get their Bletillas for cheap?!

Where are you located? If in the US, Seattle Orchid always has them on sale. Sometimes for $6. I go to shows and they always have them for less than $10. They are more like the "forgotten" orchids and very little people buy them but I've never seen them for anything more than $10. Usually they're so cheap.

+Baotran's Botanicals I actually went there recently, and you're correct - I'm about 2.5 hours away from Santa Barbara. I bought one of my dream orchids there (Den. Ise 'Pearl') and I'm certainly going back for the show. They're going to be selling $7 seedlings! Can't pass that up.They specialize in Dendrobiums, and have quite an impressive selection of Aussie Dens.
