A lot of her albums are about her in relationships (romantic, friendships, her fans, or business), or how how they made her feel. This is the first one that centers around who she is as a person.

Here's something that i love about 1989 that i dont think many new fans know so imma share it here: In every album before reputation, taylor put secret messages for every song in the lyrics booklet of her CDs In 1989 specifically, those messages form a whole story. The secret message for Blank Space is "there once was a girl known by everyone and no one"

This is my new favorite crossover experience that I never in my wildest dreams thought would happen, so so so excited that y'all are continuing to look at Taylor's music. As for Eric's challenge, I would suggest in general songs from Folklore and evermore. It was these albums that made me a swiftie, the song writing and story telling (mostly about other people) is next level. If I had to pick just one, I'd say Marjorie because it's one of my favorites and always makes me think of my own grandma I lost at the same age Taylor lost hers.

The emotive in-the-moment Dear John at age 19 juxtaposed with Would’ve Could’ve should’ve , a song written about the same relationship but at age 32 reflecting back as an adult & what she feels about the relationship now. So one song in the present and one sing 13 yrs later reflecting back.

I'm going to respectfully disagree about going straight to the ten minute version of All Too Well. I understand why people want you to do that version - it's (rightly) their favorite and they want you to experience the most complete version of the song. BUT I think there's an important component that people maybe don't consider. Part of the joy of the ten minute version is having heard the original release, loved it and sat with it for a while, and then hearing the expanded version, and appreciating the differences. In one important way they're almost different songs in that while they tell a similar story, the point of view they take on that story changes. I can't explain that part more without spoiling it, I'm afraid. Consider this: Serenity is an ok movie but you're doing yourself a disservice watching it without seeing Firefly first. My opinion is that the different versions of ATW are the same thing. If I were going to recommend an order of operations it would be to start with the 2014 Grammy performance of the original song, and then do the ATW short film which features the ten minute version (slightly longer there because the film has a few sections where the music pauses).
