Calvin's grin, as River dances, is one of my favorite moments of Blind Wave. I adore their reactions to this incredible, short lived show. I chose to rewatch these reactions to Firefly, as I fall to sleep. Huzzah.💙

The dancing is my favorite scene in the entire series. While she's being whirled around, with that big smile, Summer looks like the embodiment of Joy itself. You can see her love of dancing in every move. I wish she'd make a DVD of her doing various dances.
@davewalker85196 жыл бұрын
I've often wondered if River didn't actually have some kind of connection to Mal. Book was shot at some point during the fight, but River didn't react until Mal saw him on the ground. Almost like she didn't realize Book had been hurt until she "saw" it through Mal's eyes/mind. Glad to see you enjoying the show.
@Hession0Drasha4 жыл бұрын
Maybe she can only do thoughts up close but feelings are less specific and more powerful so she felt his alarm at range.

She referred to Mal as their father a few times in this episode, saying that Daddy was coming for them and so on. If she looks at him as a parental figure, then it makes sense that she'd be sensitive to his emotions/thoughts.
@michaelklaus4 жыл бұрын
Well she was taken up in the dance (note the dance rehearsal refenerence earlier in the episode and the other dancing reference in the movie) and not only Mal but everybody noticed that moment. I would even think that Book was even knocked out before he could comprehend what hit him. So I think she picks up all of their shock.
@NormanTheDormantDoormat3 жыл бұрын
Just think of Rivers storyline happening not entirely in sync with what is happening in Mals/Books storyline. For dramatic purposes we could be seeing Rivers reaction to Book being shot with a slight delay. So it looks like she reacts only after Mal sees Book on the ground, while she actually reacted in realtime.

Regarding the worlds being too similar, science has said the the "m" class planets, the ones that could support life, probably are similar in how they'd develop or they wouldn't support our life system. So drastically different plant life, etc...doesn't make sense. Even terraformed planets would be created similar to Earth to make settling there easier.
@7Seraphem76 жыл бұрын
The Terraforming makes it even more likely, since there, people are in control (mostly) and so would be making it as Earth like as possible.

The think to think about in the matter of Firefly is EVERYBODY (including the ship Serenity herself) is they are ALL parts of Malcom's missing soul!! Wash is Mal's missing "Humor", Kaylee is Mal's missing sense of "family", Zoey is Mal's missing sense of Duty and Honor, Jayne is Mal's missing compassion and bravery, Inara is Mal's missing love, and even Shepard Book is Mal's missing sense of God and faith!!! And Serenity is the ONLY PLACE he feels at home (the chaos of Serenity Valley that in which he named his ship)!! River and Simon ARE his internal battle of what is sane and what is insane in his life!! While they DO add drama to Malcom's life.....then also "guide him" in a sense of what is moral and just!!! It might not always be clear, but I have watched the series of Firefly multiple times over and over and if it wasn't for River or Simon a lot of times you forget that they, like Malcom are the only two in the ship that IS NOT part of Malcom's "missing" parts, and instead they are the "ying and yang" to his internal battle of what is right and just to what is unfair about life!! As far as the Chinese goes though Joss imagined a "world" where there was only two super powers that left ancient Earth which was China and the US, and those two languages where all that survived years later in space!!
@CountryMusicMann3 жыл бұрын
I'd have thought Kaylee is Mal's missing hope and optimism, and Jayne is Mal's missing will to fight.

Not a spoiler, because it isn't in the show: I've always kind of thought that Book was the military commander on the alliance side of Serenity Valley. They won the battle but he was remorseful for the loss of life and joined the priesthood trying to atone. Ended up on a ship named after his worst regrets, with some of the few survivors of his slaughter, seeing how crappy the lifestyle he killed to preserve is. Thought that would make a great setup.
@Damien32106 жыл бұрын
It's explained in the comics but it's a spoiler so if you don't want to carry on reading I've warned you. Book joined the Independents and worked as a deep cover mole in the Alliance military rising through the ranks and becoming an officer. After events he was thrown out. So to the Alliance he's an ex military officer never learning his true undercover role.
@kkentertainment52796 жыл бұрын
Same. It would have been better than the official comics backstory. Another reason to not consider tge comics canon. (I know they are confirmed as canon but imo they're not that good and there's a lot of our of character moments and character regression, plus great moments we would want to see happen like SPOILERS Mal and Inara finally confessing their feelings and kissing for the first times, would just be skipped and they'd already be together. Plus they utterly wasted the Hands of Blue.)
@Buffy8Fan6 жыл бұрын
COMICS SPOILERS KKEntertainment, Mal and Inara wouldn't acknowledge it. The sexual tension would break. They'd kiss. They'd accept it. We've seen that without actually seeing it. And the relationship didn't change otherwise, so I was happy. Also I never understood dismissing canon comics as canon just because you don't like them. I hate S3 and S6 of BtVS and S4 of AtS and the fourth episode (the pilot being two episodes) of this show aren't my favorites, but I still consider them canon. Dismissing it because you don't like them confuses me because it seems like you feel you can as they are in a different format, but perhaps I am wrong. Genuinely confused as I know people cannot like every episode of their favorite shows.

Rutting is an alternative to the "F Word"... when animals "Rut" they are engaging in mating. Humans use the verbiage in the context of "animalistic sexual activity" aka "F***ing." Like saying "darn" instead of "damn" or "gosh" instead of "God" - he is substituting Rutting for "f**cking." So when Simon says they treating brain like a rutting playground, he is swearing while trying to not be overly vulgar... which will be explained in a later episode. :)

While I don’t blame the parents for trusting their government and not believing something that probably just goes against everything they’ve ever known to be true about their world; I do judge them for not knowing their own daughter. I never got the impression that Simon being a genius is what allowed him to solve River’s code, it’s just that he knew her and anyone who knew her could have potentially done the same. But outside of their children being ‘perfect’ and successful geniuses these parents don’t actually know Simon and River at all and while I feel like it just never occurred to them that there was more to their children than being these successful perfect geniuses, that’s just sadder than them not just caring. Because we see how imaginative and playful young River is and how her being a genius is kind of an “afterthought” for her - if that makes sense. Her dance recital she knew and could do perfectly so she doesn’t have to practice anymore and she easily knows the book is wrong. It’s easy and simple for her to be a genius. But playing pretend with her brother, that’s what get her excited and engaged. Even when she’s older and sick, dancing freely and playing a prank on her brother is what makes her happy and so full of life. It’s easy for her to be a genius, but she’s so much more than that.

13:00 What is River? Perhaps even Joss' own words since this show was released have upset my impression of what her powers are, but I refuse to accept River's abilities are science fantasy or paranormal. I feel River has always been adept at understanding individuals intimately in relation to The Big Picture. The Alliance was aware of this early on and decided to experiment on River to learn how she did what she does, but what she does isn't much more complicated than Sherlock Holmes. She looks at a person and can glean from them evidence which leads to conclusions, and from that she speculates. Compare what River does in this episode with people she has only just met to what the Holmes in the BBC's "Sherlock" series does when he first meets Watson. It's deductive reasoning to a near inhuman extreme. How someone carries themselves, or keeps their hair, or the clothes they wear can give away a great deal about a person's past to someone adept at reading such clues. Or River Tam is Joss' answer to Jean Grey. I'd be very disappointed if Firefly had eventually gone in a "science is magic" direction. It's what i feel killed ABC's LOST.

FIREBI does have a kind of sexual connotation. As in Bi-Sexual and there is Flaming Homosexual. This makes FIREBI sound like Flaming Bi-Sexual of which I have no clue but there you are. > Telempathic I believe I first read about in Advance Dungeons & Dragons back around 1979. First time I heard about empaths I believe was in the original Star Trek. > Book is from an Abbey. Pastor in Latin means Shepherd. So Book is like a Pastor guiding and protecting his flock. > My guess is Book was in the military, maybe military intelligence, during the war and saw things that made him question his place in the universe. He then left the military maybe high ranking or a decorated hero and retired as it were to a monastery. Now he his wandering looking how to serve God.

As far as this episode is concerned.... My biggest complaint is that people online have treated the "hills people" as a bunch of "inbred a-holes'... and that is a SERIOUS problem for me. Being called an A-hole? Oh, absolutely, they are being a-holes. But the assumption of being "in-bred"? That has never felt right because of 2 things.... Colonization of a PLANET is generally planned out so that you have a wide-range of a GENE POOL to work with. Meaning that the chances of being an "inbred village" is highly reduced. But the second thing about that whole "in-bred" concept is this.... You are looking at a form of "established religion" in a region. Considering this example of a single village as being an indication of "inbreeding" only because of LIMITED CASTING MONEY AVAILABLE, is like considering a Baptist community out in the country instead of a city are "inbred" as well. The "hills folk" had PLENTY of time to move into the city where the crew was shopping, had PLENTY of time to actually court/marry someone from that city, as well as ACCESS to other worlds to "make some money and find a wife/husband". It just feels as if the fans of Firefly INSTANTLY decided that the entire "hills folk people" HAD to be inbred JUST because they were religious.... and I have ALWAYS found that to be more of an indication of the FANS more than the show itself. And I'm DELIGHTED BEYOND BELIEF that Blind Wave didn't even consider going into that topic at all because it means that Eric and Calvin are sticking ONLY to what the show actually shows you, or what the show actually TELLS you.. and not trying to put their personal takes on a topic on-top of the show because they THINK that it was the show's intentions all along. So for that, I thank you Eric and Calvin.
