I have not watched this yet I will but I'm on my way out but I wanted to say 2.5 years ago Heart attack, big ass stint and lung disease. High blood pressure, really high cholesterol and was on 9 medications that I really had a bad reactions too. I quite smoking, quit drinking, stopped eating red meat and ordering out and eating out, dropped how much meat I ate and quit dairy , Started walking, then going to the gym, lost 40 lbs., then started running and there is a bit more, now I'm on a blood thinner, that's it. I run 7 miles on a tread mill every day, work out with weights and ride a bicycle well when I'm not riding my Motorcycles. I'm glad I didn't just submit and give up, I'm glad I got angry at myself and came out fighting :-). I have an appointment with my cardiologist on the 29th of this month I'm going to ask him if it would be ok if I only take the blood thinner in the morning. I hope he says its ok. whatever the reason for high blood pressure it needs to come down. and the doctor obviously concluded that the hbp meds would help with both. bec the meds they use for hbp also relaxes the heart muscle and thereby helps with anxiety as well. it doesnt ring right that a doctor wouldnt talk about exercize for hbp. its one the first things. if you arent the patient then you dont really know for certain what the doctor told her. never assume you know all of what people tell you.some people choose to ignore what they doctor has said. many different scenerious can happen for you not to know the whole picture.

I don't know why people think blood pressure medication fixes anxiety. You can have low blood pressure and still be really anxious. People need to be on the correct medications to treat the illnesses properly. doctors are more concerned about fixing the symptoms, not fixing the root cause.

I'm 79 and consider myself in excellent health, with a healthy diet and lifestyle (i.e., boring - boring is good). For most of my life my systolic pressure has been around or below 120, but the readings during my last two visits to medical providers have been around 130 - diastolic remains in the 60's. I'm going to give breathing exercises a go in an effort to get my systolic down; the last thing I want to do is go on medication - one of my ambitions for my remaining time is to make it to the end without having to be on medication. Another good and helpful video - thanks!

I did some biofeedback training years ago and lowered my blood pressure considerably and at will. But every time I walk into a doctor's office, my blood pressure shoots up very high. I have white coat syndrome for sure and sometimes it takes a lot to convince different doctors. It usually takes me keeping a record of my blood pressure at home for a couple of weeks and taking that to the doctor with my machine. I had seen my current doctor for 4 years before I had a normal reading in her office. It takes a long time to convince some doctors that white coat syndrome is real and a struggle for some people. I usually try to slow my breathing before they take my blood pressure in the doctor's office now. I'm convinced my blood pressure wouldn't be high if I never had to go to a doctor!😘

@@user-ug2hk3go6i and why do they need to wear a lab coat anyway! The doctors may need to change their procedures... You wait in the waiting room for a good half an hour if you are lucky, then the nurse rushed you to the office, slap the bp cuff on your arm while you are still recovering from the sprint. I read that if you are taking your bp at home, you're supposed to sit quietly for 15 minutes, empty your bladder, do some deep breathing to relax. Maybe they can take our bp at the end of the visit? I've decided that I am not going to let the numbers bother me, because I've tested my bp before I leave my house, and it's ok. This seems to work.

True story, in 2008, I passed out at home and did a tree-fall faced plant on my nose and front teeth. Lots of blood and an ambulance ride to the ER. After being admited and in bed waiting for the doctors, I decided to try meditation. My process, was to take slow, deep breaths with a hold then a slow exhale; count of ten in, hold for a five count and then a exhale for a count of ten. I also tried to imagine myself being able to hear every sound at once without focusing on any one sound - tough to do in the ER. the breathing monitor alarm kept going off - anoying, and my pulse went down to 43. The ER nurse came in and asked my wife if my pulse was always that low and when I heard that I said it will come up shortly since I was talking to her. My BP was down to 88/60. Keep in mind, I had a broken nose, was in pain and awaiting head xRays. The break was clean, in and out with non-intervention necessary to set it.

At 70 I had a major heart attack - 100% blockage of the RCA. I was not overweight and I was fit. But I didn't keep up with my cholesterol. I ended up having 3 stents put in. Here is what I've learned. Generally my blood pressure and pulse are low - average 117/78 with a pulse in the 60s. And I keep to a restrictive diet. However, eating one bad thing shoots my blood pressure and pulse up. Say, I had a small piece of pie. So, for those who think that they can eat just sort of OK and get away with it, you can't.

Hi Docs! Thanks for your video and message, as always, great advice! A few years ago, I twisted my leg in dance class and went to a walk in clinic which literally saved my life. The doctor started with my vitals and my BP was 216/118 👀….numbers I will never forget. He asked if I was scared of doctors, nope…stressed at dance, nope…stressed at home, nope…stressed at work YES! I had no idea my BP was so high…it really is the silent killer! He told me that I was in of a stroke or heart attack…a bit stressed at hearing this. My last check up my BP was great! Long story short…started BP medication and big diet changes (less salt and caffeine). After trying lots of medications, found one that works great. Recently retired from the job that was killing me and had a hard look at everything. I was at 110/70 range most days until I started deep breathing and dancing at home. Big improvement…now at 105/67 most days. My doctor is impressed and he will reduced my medication during my next visit. My doctor was scared I would have a stroke or heart attack when this all started and is so impressed at my improvement. I still can’t believe this myself. Breathing, diet changes, regular exercise and a better outlook on life has been a game changer! Good luck to everyone on this journey. Took me six years to finally be where I am…don’t give up hope! 😀

There are a couple of things you didn’t mention in the video. How often should you do breathing exercises to reduce BP, thrice a day, daily, three times a week? Also how long should a breathing session be? I am sure these varied from study to study and I wonder how they were able to do a meta analysis with all these variables to come up with a magical number indicating by how much BP can be lowered if you do breathing exercises!

I’m a 58 year old nale in good health overall but the past 3-4 years my BP has been running 155/105 and sometimes it runs a bit higher due to chronic pain I deal with. Now, I weigh around 145 and am 5’8” so I’m not overweight at all and I don’t eat a ton of junk and in fact I fast more than eating what most Americans would consider a 3 meal day normal diet. I did have high cholesterol until I started eating a daily bowl of oatmeal and that came down without taking the cholesterol medication the docs wanted me to take. My primary care physician prescribed meteropal I think it is for BP but I have not started taking yet cause I’m just not a big medication person. I sue have severe back issues with a fused spine and my right scapula is fused to my spine and I have numerous ribs that have been plated and screwed together due to a blunt force injury in 2000 which all those injuries and repairs keep me from standard exercises but I do remain moderately active. Am I destined to take these BP meds or is there another way to lower the pressures or are they even in a place I should worry about them cause my docs don’t even seem concerned. They really didn’t have concern until I was at 205/122 one day but even then, they did not really give me answers to my questions so I’m reaching out to see what y’all’s opinion is? I’ve been a subscriber of y’all’s for a few years now and respect y’all greatly and would love to have your input please! Take care Dr’s, thank y’all for all your help. Please be safe out there!!!

Is the reduction in blood pressure from the breathing exercise a temporary condition meaning the blood pressure will return to its typical value once the “normal” day activities resumes?

Suggestion for a topic if I may…. Geriatric assessments. Who should get one and why. This topic ties into asking your pharmacist to review your meds so that people are not overmedicated and the opposite end of the spectrum is perhaps a geriatric specialist could suggest programs medicinal and not medicinal that could improve quality of life for those in their mature years. Sometime adult children of seniors don’t know where to turn to for advice on how to handle their parents needing more care and a geriatrician can be a helpful person in the process of caring for parents.

@@Chris-tz9ct For most people beetroot juice is a supplement in the sense add-on to their normal food. Be careful, though. Combining that beverage and BP medication might send your BP through the floor and you to the hospital.

So, if I do these breathing exercises, they will lower my BP prior to taking it. And the rest of the time, it will resume its normal pattern of elevated BP. My point is that the majority of the population cannot perform these exercises 24/7. I was told by one medical professional that increasing my intake of water would lower my BP. I don't know if this is true, but it is a hell of a lot easier than keeping up with a sustained breathing regimen.

Easier said than done for some of us tho. I maintain a good diet but am unable to exercise like normal due to my bones no longer being where my mother and God originally placed them in my body so I’m unable to exercise in the traditional means but I stay as active as possible. You can find my other comment I just left that explains my situation a bit better but yeah, not all of us can just go do exercise and watch our BP fall although that would be nice, lol 😂

Breathing exercises, meditation and yoga help reduce blood pressure, heart rate and also reduce your stress levels. Seems like everyone needs to lower their stress levels. :) They also impact your HRV. Heart Rate Variability.

So doctors are certainly not pain or incentivized to write scripts in Canada. It just doesn't work that way. They get paid to see you. The outcome of that visit does not affect the pay.
