I am 1 week out from right TKR and have been religiously doing my exercises 3x a day despite the horrible pain (brought me to tears a few times). Didn’t like my physio on my first appointment, hubby heard me from the waiting room. Love your advice and thoroughness when you discuss different topics; and your humour is a bonus. Shout out to Dr, Zalzal, you were the surgeon on call when my son came in with a compound fracture in his ankle from a soccer injury many years ago and you were amazing, both in your skill as a surgeon as well as your interaction with a scared kid.

I am a morbidly obese 62 year old woman who apparently some surgeons would not even do total knee replacement on because of my weight. However my surgeon said it was not a concern for him (along with explaining the risks). At about 2 weeks post op I had my first follow up and had the staples removed. I was at 0 straightened and 100 bending. I started using a cane at that point. I am coming up on 4 weeks post op and I am walking all around the apartment with no cane most of the time, and I am at 0 straight and 115 bending. I stopped the opioids the first week and went to Tylenol Arthritis strength. I am doing the therapy at home and with my therapist 3 times per week. It has not been easy, but it can be done. If I can do it, anyone can. Thanks for all of the great tips on this channel!!

My brother had both knees replaced in 2017. In 2024 both knee replacements are loose. He believes it is because he let his weight exceed 300 pounds. Apparently a revision is necessary

I am 8 months out from right TKR and 2 months out from a left TKR. My therapist had me do heel slides lying down using a slide board and a yoga strap. I have gotten great results with both with these and all the exercises you guys suggest. The chair to chair hang helps a lot with getting the flat out position and being able to sit with your leg straightened out. I ended up with 123° bending on my left knee, and 0 flat out. Ended up with 117° on the right and 0. I put in the work. I let them push me to get back on my feet. All these exercises are crucial in getting the most out of your TKR. You guys videos are great. I wish I had seen them before my first surgery. I'm doing things now I haven't done in 20 years. Your only limit is yourself.

And whatever the heck is preventing me from bending my knee further during rehab. It feels like something is in there and I did read that sometimes “remnants” are left behind during surgery…could be a piece of the glue/cement that broke off or came loose and is now lodged in there. It just doesn’t feel right. I’m almost 4 weeks post-op TKA.

Agreed. I had TKR on the left back in February 27 of 2023 at Canon City St Thomas Hospital. My surgeon was Really helpful before, during, and his nurse, Tracey, is the Best. The same day after surgery I got up to the bedside, and in the evening I walked to the bathroom (with help of course), and yes, it can be done. I am now released from therapy, and doing the rest on my own. My therapists were Very helpful and they listened to Everything I said, and closely monitored All my steps and exercises. I am now coming to other channels here on KZbin to find extra exercises to also help. I have also learned many different things on my own that also help with healing and walking again. I started walking without a walker on about the 3rd week. I started using a cane on the 4th week. All this on my own, with letting my therapists know what I was capable of and trying things to help this healing along. I can't stressing enough about also watching the color of your surgical site for color changes. It helps dearly in knowing when to ice. Don't wait till you are stiff and in pain, do it as soon as you see it start to turn red. It helps with healing and pain management. I told my therapists and now they're telling their other patients as well. I am also loosing weight, whatever I do to my left, I do to the right. These are My opinions. I believe those are the best, doing heel slides, lying down, using a slide board and a yoga strap. I don’t have a heel slide, so I just basically use the strap, so when I was telling my sister, what I was doing, she gave me supreme shit for that well, it says so in the videos to do that, of course, I am 4 weeks out since I had my knee replaced. There’s two exercises they want me to do there are more but these two are the hardest and they just make you wanna cry because I’ve hurt myself several times so now it makes it hard for me to do any exercise. I have to take narcotic pain medication in order to do the exercises because my knee is so tight. I’ve tried to do the icing using a special machine only to be told by the physiotherapist why the hell did I buy this machine in the first place ice packs are just as good. Actually they may be good but I only own 5 ice packs so the machine I paid a lot of money for it came in handy. It’s hard to put your foot up 4-6 times a day. I was getting tired of trying to lay down and put my leg on four pillows. 4 pillows don’t work so I had to do three and I have a special bed that actually puts my leg up higher above my heart. I have a walker, I have forearm crutches, and I am learning to walk with them. I can only climb stairs, one stair at a time, one day I wasn’t even thinking, and I put my leg out and I climbed up the stairs without thinking, I can only do one at a time, so it really scared the crap out of me.

I’m two weeks postop TKR and I did all of the exercises daily for a month before I had surgery. The day after surgery I was able to bend to 90°. I was able to get my knee flat to 0°. I stopped using a walker and cane five days after surgery and today at my last physical therapy appointment, my bend was at 110°. Surgery was painful and the nerve pain has been the worst but I am now able to walk without debilitating pain for the first time in a year and a half. Woohoo! Thank you for all of your educational videos, they sure helped me

Hi! I am 5 weeks post op from a TKR. It hurts like heck! I have been going to PT 3 days a week. When they manipulate the knee it really hurts. My surgeon is scheduling a manipulation under anesthesia. Thank you talking with docs for all your expertise!

I am a 74-year-old woman and this is the 8 week anniversary of my total Bi-Lateral knee surgery. It was a tough couple of weeks, but glad I had both done at once and had home therapy and now going to rehab (right knee little weak on stairs) I started driving today and my therapist says I am way ahead of lots of single knee patients. No regrets. Very thankful for my husband's care first two weeks! He is scheduled for one knee this December and I will be helping him. I wish I saw these videos "long before surgery", but enjoying them now. Keep moving and exercising-no pain, no gain and they really mean it.

I am a week out from TKR and like you I was nervous about getting it done. I am doing well and working with the exercises which are making a difference. The best thing is - even through the pain - I can see how much better my knee is going to be. I am now quite excited that I am going to get my movement back after years of stiffness. I would say start doing the exercises now as it will benefit you a lot. It's important to get the strength in the quads.

I had my TKR 6 weeks ago and followed your advice (along with my MD and PT). It REALLY works and is so important. The knee flex exercise that was most beneficial to me was: lay in bed, get a long strap, belt, robe tie, whatever, and put it on your foot. Use it to pull your foot forward with your heel on the bed. Keep pulling and hold for 10 seconds. Do it 15 times 2x a day. I would pull until it just felt so tight/uncomfortable. It does work! My flexion is 130 now (unassisted) and 136 when I pull it.

I HIGHLY recommend going to a rehab center directly from the hospital if that is an option for you!! I did this and it was very structured and consistent, which is what you need after TKR. When i have my knee done again, I will without a doubt do the rehab center option again. Good luck to all of you who will be having a TKR!

I had my left knee replaced 9 days ago, (Jan 12, 2024), and learned a convenient time and method to do my knee flexion exercises. I do it as I'm showering. I wrap my knee in cellophane, then sit in a shower chair facing away from the shower head with toes touching the opposite wall. I scoot the chair forward until I get the desired stretch, stopping short of "agony." By the time I've shampooed, lathered and rinsed, the pain has typically waned, and then I'll scoot the chair forward an inch or two more while I relax with a final warm water rinse. It's a two-fer. I'm working my knee and smelling good when I'm done.

I love watching your videos. I just wish I knew about them prior to both my knees being replaced, they are very informative. I also work at HHS. I worked registration for the fracture clinic and DI for a while. I would like to offer my advise as a semi pro. My first knee (right), was not as nice as my left, which I just had at OTMH on Apr 21st. It was a totally different experience. I found that my stationary bike was a huge game changer. I started using it a few days after surgery and just kept trying until 6 days PO I was able to peddle all the way around. Great motivation. However I found out 10,000 steps at 4 1/2 weeks PO is way too much. Thank you so much for the videos.

I also recommend using the gravity technique for getting the bend. Lying on back, leg up and letting gravity pull your foot down, not at the thigh but the knee if that makes sense. Thanks again for the great information.

My physical therapist told me while I was in the hospital recovering from both TKR and compartmental syndrome “motion is lotion.” I was unable to do therapy while in hospital, but I remembered his words after I went home. Did what he suggested at home, and only had to go to therapy twice. Never had a problem!

I had a total knee replacement a day and a half ago. First, the quad strengthening I did for the knee that wasn’t having the surgery has been a life saver. Using that leg to get up and down in the bathroom has been crucial. I can’t imagine having both knees done the same day. Second, figuring out when you need pain meds has been more of a challenge than I thought, but have it figured out now. I take an Oxy & Tylenol every 4 hours roughly and every 3rd time I take a tramadol instead of an Oxy just to mix it up and not get too dependent on either one. I was sent home with a On-Q nerve block catheter but honestly, I am not sure how much that helps. It sounds good but there has definitely been more pain these last two days than I imagined. “Stay ahead of the pain” does not seem to mean you will be pain free if you take your meds. The pain of having bad knees prepared me well for this pain though 👍🏼plus, this pain will go away. The pain of stretching is also substantial but it is satisfying to see my leg develop more range both ways. I was sent home with a CPM machine and the first full day I was able to go 0-80 degree bends. The slow motion movement is relaxing actually. I have spent the last 2 years increasing my range so this amount of flex may not be normal. I am a 62 year old guy and am looking forward to pain free walking soon!

My TKR is in 13 days. I don’t see my surgeon again prior. Your videos fell out of the sky onto my iPad. What a blessing! I’ve written all of the exercises and will begin tomorrow. Because of the problems walking, I have several tools at home: canes,crutches, wheel chair, walkers. My surgeon says that having neuropathy, my recovery may take longer. I will do all I can to prove him wrong! Thank you so much for your insights. ❤

Having had a double TKR (66 y.o.), I cannot agree with your philosophy more. The best advice that I got was from a recovery ward nurse "Suck it up, buttercup ; it's gonna hurt , but push the envelope ! ". I was home (alone) walking around the block, unassisted (no cane, walker or whatever) on day 13 , a lady who had the same thing done at that time was doing the same on day 10. I think surgery techniques have improved in the last 13 years and patients are doing even better . I have seen patients who "baby" themselves take a LOT longer to get back to regular living. "Push the envelope, buttercup".

I had my 2nd TKR 7 weeks ago. By far the most beneficial exercise for me is "dangling" whereby I sit on a bench and gently alternately kick each foot forward and allow it to swing back as far as the swollen knee will allow. As the bending improves you can kick a little more allowing momentum and gravity to decide how much bend you can achieve. Within 5 weeks I have achieved the same range of motion as I ultimately ended up with after my first TKR! I do this "dangling" many many times a day just to keep the knee moving.

I am 24 hrs post op bilateral partial replacement. I am almost 64 years old, but very active. I didn’t stay overnight because of Covid. I also think you are much more active in your own home. it has been rough, but I’m up and walking every hour and because of your videos, I am taking my pain meds regularly. This particular video made me feel better about my “concrete” right leg! I start pt next week, but am doing some exercises now and and adding your recommendations. Thanks so much, keep these videos coming!! They are very uplifting!

I love your videos. Just had TKR on left knee 20 days ago. I was able to walk with a cane 6 days post-surgery. I have been trying very hard to get flexion out to 120 degrees at least by 6-8 weeks post-surgery. One of the things my PT told me to do at home is to place my walker around a foot stool I have, while standing and holding onto the walker to put my foot up on the foot stool and bend the knee forward as much as I can and hold for a few seconds, then release. I have been doing this 8-10 reps at a time throughout the day. Another thing my PT had me do is to use the partially recumbent bike I have at home. Move the seat back a few notches, put my surgical side foot into the pedal strap first then the other foot and rock the pedals to the maximum position and hold at that Max position for a few seconds. I do this about 10 minutes a day. Also, walk around the house as much as possible.

Thank you for the suggestion of using recumbent bike. I have one and wasn’t sure when it would be appropriate. I’m using FORCE (website where I’m provided exercises to do at home along with videos describing how to do each exercise) for my PT, and seems to be doing great. As long as I’m motivated to do PT and take it seriously, I’ll be ok. Thanks again for suggestions. So grateful to have these You Tube videos and the docs and PT tell us how to maximize your recovery.

Very informative thanks.My husband sat on the swing bench in the garden and slowly moved back and forth to exercise the knee.A friend used their kids skateboard under their foot whilst sitting on an upright chair.Both worked fine.

I totally agree with the doctors and the Physio. I had bilateral knee replacement done about 7 weeks ago. I religiously did all the exercises Physio asked me to do in the first two weeks after the operation followed up by twice a week rigorous physiotherapy. Results were amazing. Into 8th week my knee bend is over 125 degrees in both the knees. When I went for the first follow up with my surgeon, he couldn't believe his eyes. Credit goes to him. Hes asked me to do heel drag to the bum with knee bend from day zero. It contributed immensely to the progress I made. I just returned after 2 kilometers walk without any assisted devices. This is on top of an hour and half intense physio this morning. These are the results of doing all the exercises prescribed by the physiotherapists. One piece of advice, don't go home after the operation. Check into rehab as suggested in the video. Returns are high.

I’m at week 4 after TKR on my left leg. Bad knees run in my family. My sister had both knees replaced (not at the same time). She told me PT is important. I’ve been pushing myself at home to do the exercises they show me at my PT sessions. There are times I don’t want to do them, but I force myself. It’s paying off. My leg is straight and my leg is bending at 130 degrees. I put a lot of effort into my rehab. I wasn’t prepared for the amount of pain for the first two weeks after surgery. The pain meds and the exercises really helped me get through it. I’m pushing myself because I want the benefits of having gone through this surgery. I’m going to be way better prepared for the surgery on my right knee. No surprises next time.

Idk when you are getting your 2nd knee done. I am 5 months out from my first knee and 4 months from my second my second was so much easier than my first cuz I knew what to expect. Good luck to you therapy is so important. I still have an exercise ball and strap in my bed first thing I do in the morning and last thing I do at night is to stretch.

I had Bilateral total knees done yesterday,. I had it under spinal anesthesia, with no sedation..It went super well for me..I was sa Surgical Tec for my career, so I love to be part of a surgery ,I could be awake for! The sawing and pounding is "music to my ears" I guess what I needed to hear the most is, "take your pain meds!!". After My 1st PT this morning (which I prob did too much,) when I got up 3 hrs later I felt pretty stiff and painful.. Your pain med point is well taken! Thanks for great info, and easy to implement!! I have had 3 X Synovectomy over the past 40 years in New Zealand . . All the exercises you have shown are exactly what I did post op and I can’t emphasise enough how important it is to do them all religiously !! After my very first operation I didn’t go to outpatient physio so when I saw the surgeon for my first follow after 2 weeks it had healed straight, with very little bend . . I then had to go back to surgery immediately to have it manipulated . . The pain involved after this procedure was absolutely excruciating !!

I also had a synovectomy, which is a rare situation, so I was curious to communicate with you! I had one 34 years ago, and this time, a total knee replacement along with the added synovectomy. BIG ouch. Not guaranteed to improve the situation. The need for the replacement was due to the synovial malfunction over the years. I am at week 6 post surgery now, and only at 75 degrees ROM, still having so much sensitivity and pain (medial knee cap area). Still selling locally, and the PUSH TIL YOU HURT and more approach has actually set me BACK.I lost ROM, I was at 90 but it was SO painful to get there with the Dr. pushing me, I was traumatized for days after, and could barely walk. I wonder if the synovectomy is what is causing so much pain/swelling/sensitivity? I remember this from 35 ears ago. I DID have a manipulation under anesthesia at that time as I didn't get past 90 degrees after 6 weeks, but it was traumatizing, and did not really help in the end. Last week I had to seek out non-conventional therapies as the Dr's and PT are not familiar with the synovectomy rehab, no one seems to be! I've researched PubMed, it is an anomoly that no one cares enought to "solve". The alternative therapies I am trying now in week #2 now: Softwave / Shockwave sound therapy machine, 2x/week for 2 weeks, next week for 8 more sessions 1x/week. It breaks up scar tissue hopefully, sends message to the knee to send stem celss to heal. Second is the X10 Knee Therapy machine. SO MANY people with stubborn situations or those not responsive to the pain and torture approach are successful. But many started sooner, wish I had know about it sooner, but I started at 5.5 weeks . MOst use it daily 3x/day for 2 weeks, I am going for 3-4 weeks. (x10therapy.com) Any advice, ideas would be greatly appreciated. I have been an avid outdoors person, hiking and biking and kayaking for 45 years (now age 64) and I want to be able to ride a bike again! I need 90100 degrees minimum, ideally 115 degrees. I am hoping this recovery WILL be successful, maybe just take longer? I am avoiding MUA at all costs!

I’m so thankful I had a dr and therapist that push me it’s it’s been 13 years and my knees are great. Anyone that asks me i tell them I’m not gonna lie it hurts and physical therapy is so important.

Ive been a home care PT for 7 years. Home health is a great option post op vs starting outpt PT right away. Ive seen much better outcomes than when I worked in outpt. Too many patients and PTs do way too much early post op leading to excessive swelling which inhibits every aspect of recovery. Two rules to live by “bend it dont break it” meaning work on range of motion but be gentle and progressive. And “get up and move but listen to your body”. If youre dealing with poor pain tolerance or excessive swelling you need to rest and ice and resume your mobility/exercises later in the day or even the next day.

Talking with Docs videos are great! The team approach and humour will make surgery a success. I've been doing the pre-op exercises since 2011 when I tore my meniscus, at least 4 times a day and every 2 weeks with a physiotherapist. Hopefully, with continued physio and determination, my new knee will heal quickly, I couldn't be more ready! Thanks for the info and the visits to your clinic which are always informative.

You guys are amazing! My mother was discharged the same day after a TKR with just a piece of paper with exercises. She was too drugged up to remember all her instructions from the phsyio, and thanks to Covid I couldn't go inside. Your advice here has been soo useful, thanks a lot docs and also Andrea. I have been doing these exercises with her and only now after a few days, they confirmed we're supposed to be doing these. Although my mother is in Ottawa, I live in Halton. I hope that by the time my turn comes, you guys can do my TKR :)

I had my right knee done on May 26 2022 and starting walking everyday and doing my exercises. Within the first six weeks I went from 90 degrees to 120 and was mostly pain free. The key was starting early and doing my exercises every day! an exercise that really helped me was lying down legs straight bring your repaired key up and using a towel on the back of your leg pull your knee up towards your chest as far as you can hold for 5 seconds and release do 10 reps.

Great informational videos. One thing I found very helpful is keeping your knee straight with something under your heel before surgery helps keep the habit of bending it to your knee less painful. It will help you be in the habit of keeping it straight after surgery. And the ankle pumps before surgery helps a lot. I have had 3 tkr's and doing so great. I have had rotator cuff surgery and it was the worst surgery I have ever had. I have torn it again and have been putting it off for months but its getting bad.

I am 7 weeks out from a total hip replacement and my swimming pool was a lifesaver for rehab. ( I also did the prescribed PT.) I have had work done on my knees before and did so much of my PT in the pool. I am an aquatic professional and have a strong level of understanding of what our bodies can do in the water. Do you guys ever talk about aquatic therapy? So much of what you talked about in this video would translate in the water perfectly. Again, thank you for the great education!

My favorite thing ever is rolling my legs back and forth on an exercise ball while either lying down or sitting.. I do it before PT to loosen up, any time I feel tight or for a couple hours at time if I'm watching a movie or TV. It feels so good and keeps the knees in motion. I started this for each knee about 3 weeks after surgery. I even travel with an exercise ball--they are about $20 and come with a pump so it's easy to transport. A lot of other exercises to do too--like putting legs on the ball and lifting up your bottom and holding.Or putting the ball against the wall behind your back and squatting to work the quads.

I had a knee replacement 3 months ago...an one exercise that helped me alot my house is split level an I would go to the steps...put my foot on the first step an rock back an forth...the more I done it I would push my knee forward and hold in like 10 15 seconds..my first week of course was bad but after that things started getting better and I'm going back to work now...thanks your video was a good one...😊

as always, another great video and super helpful to have some exercise ideas. my doc in california didn't insist i do exercises ahead of the surgery... maybe because i am relatively young (48 years old) for a TKR... and was already working out regularly before the surgery. i had issues post op with the sutures not dissolving (at all!!!) and superficial infection/swelling around the incision... this impacted my ability to really push it in PT for the entire 8 weeks.. in fact my doc had me take a break from several sessions of PT to allow my incision to calm down. and needless to say, i never got anywhere near tears while i was there. lucky for me, i was still able to get full range of motion and extension back... however, the joint still feels somewhat swollen and it's been almost 7 months since the surgery date. incision is still numb in places too... hope both those things get better over time. thanks again for your great videos... top notch for sure!!

Praise God, just had TKR on March 7, 2022. After reading this post, I realize that the pain, swelling, and stiffness is normal! And that I should work hard through the pain, ice and keep my leg elevated doing off time and start the process over again. And based on what I've read, it does get better! I am 13 mths after double knee replacement, I did all the therapy & pool .got a bit slack afterwards & found weakness started in my hips , but I'm into restoring cars so I started working on & under them. I live on the third floor-34 steps. My doc wanted me to do the steps every 2 hr during the day before my surgery. Made it easier the day of discharge to walk up to my apartment! I still do my steps multiple times daily!

Here is one that my P.T. taught me in my first outpatient therapy. As of today 33 days post op for TKR. I have used one of my wife's martial arts belts by tying a loop in one end, slipping it over my left foot with the knot on the sole of my foot. I lie down in the prone position with the rest of the belt over my right shoulder and pull my leg as far as I can tolerate to get the maximum amount of flexion at the knee. I hold this flexed position for 15 seconds then release slowly until my leg is fully extended and foot is off the edge of the bed/table. I repeat this for 10 repetitions and 3 sets. This is a slow exercise and does take a while to get done If done correctly. However, the payoff is fantastic. I hope this method helps. And both Dr. Z and W are spot on, NO PAIN, NO GAIN. Also, if you experience any pain in the muscle around the knee at night, start by doing an AROM heel slide in bed for several repetitions. The discomfort will go away. It works for me. Motion is the Lotion in this respect. And to Andrea the P.T., give this method a try with your patients if you haven't already.

No pain no gain is a great description 👍. I’m 5 days post op and I’ve started my home physio and yes it hurts…a lot ! But I know that it has to be done for a good recovery. I take my pain meds about 30 minutes prior to exercise and it does help. I have my first proper physio session on Monday at the Hospital so I expect to suffer. Again another great video and really helpful…thank you 👍🇬🇧

Wow, I had 12 different exercises I had to do before total knee replacement. After the knee replacement I had 14 exercises to do 3x daily for the first 6 weeks then after that I was required to go to a physio for more advanced exercises added to my 14 exercises. I had an excellent recovery because of doing exercises faithfully.

I found I was having a reaction to the opioid's in my medications - I itched from head to toe and became so nauseated that I couldn't eat or sleep. That, along with the pain pump I was issued quit working after 1 day. So my exercise routine/physio got delayed 4 days until the meds got straightened out. My surgeon didn't have any plan for pre-op exercises for me - only post-op. So I'm slow to recover now. I won't be seeing my PT until 18 days post-op. I'm jumping ahead a little by watching your videos. I have to make up 4 days lost, and compensate for no pre-op physio. Thanks guys.

@@TalkingWithDocs 5 weeks post TKR on the right knee - I walked about 2 miles yesterday, going from a parking lot to a college football stadium and back. (Griz -won over Portland State 53 to 14). I drove today a pickup with an automatic, no problem. I'm going to wait a week before I try driving with a stick. I'm a little sore from the walking, but otherwise I'm on the mend. I'm going to be one of the 5 that isn't happy with my TKR - because of the cost. I live in the US and I have Medicare and BCBS supplemental insurance and my portion was a shock. I will have to wait several years before I can afford to get the other knee done, or my right hip. Or my lower back.

These videos are great and informative. Planning on an outpatient TKR in Jan. Then the other a few months later if all goes well on the first. My provider had a zoom orientation that was ok but in these video the Docs are candid in a good and almost entertaining way. A touch of humor helps. I'm going to suggest this series to my Dr and Provider. These Two Docs truly abide by the oath.

This video is marvelous, I went to complete knee surgery 10 months ago, and as you mention the exercises are vital to be able to get the knee function, however, it was very nice to see all the exercises to do before and after, so now I will start to do them since I am going into knee surgery again, but this time on my left knee. if you have any more ideas of before and after surgery please get in touch, thank you again.

I only had arthroscopic knee surgery and am surprised how much pain and immobility I have had. My surgeon offered physiotherapy afterwards but in his opinion it wasn’t required so I opted to do my own. I watched several KZbin videos and did my own exercises ( similar to these you offer) and felt that I was doing great…until I wasn’t. Pain began in my lower leg…not the knee but along my shin. Anyway, long story short, I’m now in physiotherapy and doing okay. The recovery is longer than I ever expected. I do recommend a KZbin exercise series for seniors called Yes2next. These two ladies do low impact cardio as well as gentle exercise for full body strength and balance. Thanks, guys…you are the best😍

Thanks for the great videos. I have had an unusual case where the polyethylene liner of my TKR started falling apart about 4 years after my TKR and created a very large popliteal cyst. I was young for a knee replacement (49) and in good shape. I had an injury when I was twelve years old and it took many years to develope arthritis and a bowed leg bad enough to want to do the surgery. So about six years into my TKR it was time to replace the liner and hope that by taking the cause of the popliteal cyst away, it would gradually shrink and disappear. Not so lucky. At six weeks post op I was one day away from my 6 week follow up and excited to swim for the first time of the hot summer. I had worked hard with PT and everyone thought I was doing well but everyone also noticed the very large cyst on the back of my knee. On that day before my post op visit I was the only patient in the waiting area (thankfully) and I was doing some stretches as I waited for my PT to call me in. With one of my flexion exercises I felt and heard a pop and a very large amount of serosanguineous drainage came out of the front of my knee, opening about 3/4 of an inch of my newly healed incision. It covered my lower leg, the wall, the chair, and the carpet. Long story long is that within two days I was back in surgery for a cleaning procedure and another liner replacement. Luckily there was no infection. For two weeks the surgeon said not to bend it more than 45'. I am on week three now and am not suppose to bend it more than 100'. The thought is that the cyst ruptured. I do feel and see it possibly coming back if that is the case. I'm fearful that as I do more flexion and extension my wound will open again. I'm fearful I will lose my window of opportunity for complete flexion and extention. I'm fearful of being an odd ball case with an odd ball popliteal cyst initially caused by polyethylene wear and not finding anyone who has had experience at treating this problem.

I’m 66 and had knee replacement surgery 4 weeks ago. Being a former athlete and somewhat of an overachiever I’ve pushed myself with pre-op and post op exercises. After a week I ditched the walker for a cane. After another week I ditched the cane. After 4 weeks I can get my knee to 126 degrees and feel good! However, the pain at night, even with meds, keeps me up. My PT says I’m pushing too hard, but I have 2 questions: First, why is it too hard? I’m getting back to work, etc. but he says I may be doing damage. Second, besides OTC and/or opiates, what else can I do to relieve night pain and swelling? Seems like I have to change leg position every five minutes! It wakes me up. Thanks doctors! You’re great!

Hi Jbuzz. So unless you fall we would say you probably cannot do too much physio. Also if your pain is severe maybe you should back off a little. As for other pain options - ice, elevation, tensor bandage and time. Sleep is very difficult for the first couple of months for a lot of reasons. We have an upcoming video on that exact topic! I only had a month to prepare for my total knee replacement after seeing my surgeon. A week after seeing the surgeon, I had a date for four weeks later, for surgery. I did what I could exercise wise in that time frame . Two years ago I had torn hip muscles ( torn in early 2020 , Covid hit and nothing could be done for a year) repaired and I could not do any kind of exercise for a year to make sure the muscles healed. So my muscles were weak, but I'm making great strides. Before leaving the hospital, my range of bend in the knee sitting ,was 95%. It's 3 weeks since my surgery. Managing the pain with Tylenol during the day when needed. Occasionally using prescription pain meds at night when pain won't settle down. I'm using a cane to get around or no cane at all around my home. Physio is going well.

Watching your video for my second knee replacement. My left knee replaced 10 March 2022. My right knee replacement is the 14th August 2024. 6 days time. THis time it is in a private hospital in the UK paid for by the NHS. Interesting your comments regarding the worker. As I went straight on to crutches after the first knee replacement. Best exercises for reflection for me is the bar stool with a low rung about 9 inches off the floor. I struggled to put my heel on the bar stool rung for a start then once achieved put more of my foot onto the rung once I had achieved the insole and front of the heel on the rung I slide my bum foreword with my insole and front of my heel on the rung.

Going for total Knee in 16 days. 2 arthroscopic surgeries done this year. Been in PT since last December. Now working really hard for the next adventure. Learning so much

These are all the exercises I am doing 10 weeks post op. I finished up my therapy I couldn't be more pleased with my new knee. I had a great surgeon. Looking forward to getting the other one done on March 2023.

I also used a skateboard after my first knee replacement. It helped a lot. Will be using it again after my second knee, which is day after tomorrow!!

How did you use the skate board? I’m am having TKR the end of March and researching everything I can to make it go better. I’m 65 years old and still work at an automotive factory.

Nancy Long, I used it to help my range of motion. I sat on the arm of the couch with the skateboard by the side of the couch. Would roll it back and forth. At first I couldn’t roll it to far but after a while my range of motion got so much better that I could roll all the way back and all the way forward! It’s awesome!! Good luck with your surgery! Do your exercises every day! If you can get the leg as strong as you can before surgery it will be so much better afterwards!

Thank you for some great information. Maybe I’m crazy, but I would really like to have both knees done at the same time. However, Medicare won’t pay for your knee replacements if they’re done at the same time. Doing them at different times creates a much longer healing period. Andrea is smart and very beautiful!

I had 1 done..I have another 1 - 2 go..I kniw what 2 expect now..It's a hard ass surgery..I was determined 2 get thru it.I spent only 1 night n the hospital.Thank God,but I was tougher than I thought.I did everything they told me 2 do.My knee feels 100%better.It'll b 1 yr.the end of Sept.I can't have the 2nd 1 done yet bc of eye surgeries..Just got 1 done last wk.I've been seeing every Dr.w/ a GIST n it.No joke.I was born w/ out eye lens & no hangers 4 the lens..It was sooo painful.I took my prayers w/ me.This Dr.is so young he tripped me out.We thought we were going 2 have 2 redo this surgery bc the iris was 2 big r 2 small,but by gosh we did it..I bared w/ him. Going thru hell here..God I got 2 get thru these surgeries 1 way r the other.God b w/ me & us all..

Glad I found you two. I now have both knees bone-on-bone (well, one for sure) with half the cartilage gone (somewhere!!). Not fun. But I’m going to do those “pre-op” exercises & even the post. I have a brother (out of 6) that did both knees at the same time. (Lots of tennis) Had lots of calcium build-up!! (Poor doc! Took half hour more per knee to get rid of it!). I’m sending these to him, also. My mother in her late 80’s had her knees done, went straight to a great rehab center. It was excellent. She was a champ patient!

Great video. I had bilateral knee replacement ( not the same time). I would work on flexing my knee by using a dog leash. With my legs straight out I would put the leash around my foot, holding the two ends of the leash, I pull causing my knee to bend until I couldn’t stand the pain then release. I would do this 10 times.

Hi guys it's been awhile since I've seen any of your videos. I don't know if you remember I had my knee surgery back in 2022 total knee replacement on my left knee. In March of this year, I will be having my right knee done. This time it's going to be a new doctor my orthopedic doctor referred me to another doctor to perform my right knee. One of his colleagues and they will be using robotic surgery to replace my right knee. Don't know why he didn't want to do it himself? Maybe this needs more tender loving care LOL 😂.... After watching this video it reminds me of all the hell I went through the first time around now I know what to expect the second time around..... Hope to see more. You guys have a good one!

Thanks, great ideas. One of the things I did after TKR was to sit in a glider and whether I was watching tv, reading or just visiting I made sure I kept gliding forward and back and every few minutes I would try to force my foot back more and more under the chair. To some degree I could do the same thing in a rocking chair but the glider worked better for me.
