Bloom: A Touching Animated Short Film about Depression and What It Takes to Recover the Light of Being
How the warm rays of hope and healing enter the dark inner chamber of leaden loneliness through the unexpected cracks of kindness.
“Sometimes one has simply to endure a period of depression for what it may hold of illumination if one can live through it, attentive to what it exposes or demands,” the poet May Sarton wrote as she contemplated the cure for despair amid a dark season of the spirit. But what does it take to perch that precarious if in the direction of the light? When we are in that dark and hollow place, that place of leaden loneliness and isolation, when “the gray drizzle of horror induced by depression takes on the quality of physical pain,”.
“sometimes it only takes a stranger, in a dark place… to make us warm in the coldest season.”

Re-watch the film and youll see why its amazing for our time. She was able to let go of waiting for the onion to bloom once she was no longer depressed and no longer putting all her hope into something unfruitful. She planted other things and watched them flourish and so did her mental state.

I think the onion did bloom, you can see it at 2:45. The one she gives away is a new one, just about to start blooming as well. Having to take care of something else, that needs sunlight and care helped break her out from the passiveness that can be depression, and inspired her to get more flowers. Being gifted something that brings life, light and beauty into our lives might very well be the spark needed to open our blinds and find some new meaning to our existence :)

@@Panda72021Bulbs are sometimes called onions, so it's not incorrect. Amaryllis have bulbs, and it's in the same family as garlic and onion. It might also be from differences in translation. In my language the bulb itself is called 'onion', so they are all onions regardless if you're talking about yellow onions, tulip onions or amaryllis onions :)

Contrived garbage. This MIGHT work IF your depression is brought on by EXTERNAL factors beyond your control.

I like the symbolism of giving away an onion type flower. They bloom big and bright, but only after having stayed in darkness for a while. So even if you end up in darkness, don't get no water or sunlight for a while, it doesn't have to mean you're not able to bloom again. Maybe you're just an amaryllis, and simply need a few rays of light and some water to start growing again

Ridiculous analogy. I have endogenous depression. Giving me light and water makes no difference. You know NOTHING about depression.
@katrinepedersen9660
@katrinepedersen9660 10 ай бұрын
@@solitaireburton3740 I've had depressions for the better part of my life. I've been low enough to stand at the edge staring down into the black waters. Don't tell someone they know nothing, when you yourself know nothing about them. Just because you have one experience with your depression, does not mean it's the same for everyone else. My analogy was about those who feel as if they will never have purpose again, never be happy again, never be _worth_ anything again. Because they've fallen down into some darkness. But there is hope, that through the right care and timing, they might yet bloom again and that darkness will not define them. If you did not feel like it fit for your situation, then it was not meant for you
@clarewillison9379
@clarewillison9379 10 ай бұрын
@@solitaireburton3740That’s just one person’s personal interpretation of the analogy that spoke to their experience. As I’m sure you know depression can come from different causes, be of a range of intensities, last all kinds of durations, and its intensity and consequences differ as well, from person to person and even individually differ from day to day or year to year. The plant blooming analogy might speak to someone else of being helped with the right medication or a talking therapy, or anything that was introduced from outside them by someone or something who noticed and cared about their suffering and reached out to them. But then they opened the door, took it in, and did what was suggested with it. Not everyone will want to do all those things the first time, or be able to even if they want to a little bit, but this isn’t a documentary or psychology seminar it’s just a short charming encouraging animation which took ages to create. Maybe it’s meant for the sunny-dispositioned gardeners to see and think of someone they can do something kind for, instead of those of us currently stuck in the dark rooms feeling we have nothing to offer the world. I hope they don’t expect instant results (if they’re proper gardeners they’ll be patient). I hope and pray that your situation will improve and for now please just know that a random stranger (me) cares about you. ✊🏼🙏🏼💝🕊💐

This animated film holds the truth. I went through a terrible depression and I almost died this year because of it. I lost both of my adult children due to tragedies recently 😭😭😢😢 It was devastating and a horrible nightmare for me. I had to seek professional help 7 months ago. I started to do gardening it helps so much. Before my son passed away in a terrible accident, he left me his dog so he could pursue his new career. Both gardening and the dog as well as therapy are little by little helping me. One day at a time…. 🙏🏼😕

Im still coming out of my depression. Its been a couple of years so far. I am fortunate and blessed to have family and friends. They wouldn't let me hide away. I started out just volunteering with my sister's company. Helping her helped me. If you don't have family and friends. I would suggest volunteering with other organizations. Ive volunteered in theaters and festivals. Helping people you don't know personally is cool because you don't have any expectations of reciprocity. You are loved ❤

😰 - oh my goodness. My house is cluttered & my shades are drawn. My heart, soul, body & mind have struggled with treatment resistant depression for so long, it's hard to get out for short walks... but the walks help my fibromyalgia pain a bit. So I force myself to get out of bed even when I really don't feel like it, which is most days, because I don't want to become agoraphobic and get stuck in my home. This short video is truly enlightening and beautiful - and awe-inspiring. Thank you to all of the artists and producers who created it. It's inspiring. No words needed to express the feels. I like that you kept bags beneath her eyes, indicating that though she’s not through it, she’s accepting and reaching out nonetheless. It’s the first step. Caring for our fellow living creatures - starting with plants - can be the beginning of healing. Sometimes you must start at the beginning, by digging in the dirt.

It took me some minutes to decide to watch this animation or not. I don't like to remember those years where I was like the main character, I shut myself away since I thought I'd never bloom ( I used to compare myself to others a lot and underestimated myself). But one day, I found my life purpose with God's help, and my mom's support; those gloomy days went away. I'm happy to be alive and I can take care of myself and others 😊. Regarding this video, it's beautiful and remains us that we can help others by bringing them hope in those dark days. God bless you all ❤!

I've suffered from severe depression for many decades, but I don't put that burden on others, and I always appreciate if any form of help or kindness is offered to me. No-one's going to be able to help people like you and I if we're not willing to try and help ourselves in the first place, so you need to start with yourself. A kind gesture from someone towards me, even if it's small or simple, makes a BIG difference to me, because it means that someone cares, and shows that you are worth something to someone. You're far from the only one who feels the sheer hell of depression, so remind yourself of that when you feel the loneliness and desperation which that entails. Stay safe and well, wherever you are, and try not to reject the world around you. At least, not totally.

Depression can make your life feel like a desolate wasteland where every seed you have ever sown failed to grow ... All living things require the right environment to thrive. Nurturing plants and animals can fufill a deep need for purpose and a sense of belonging in us. Beautiful message in your animation. Thank you.

Things I have learnt! 💌 1) learn to live alone! 2) everyone at the end will get disperse across the globe... looking for jobs and apartments! 3) make loneliness your home, work on yourself, write down every random thought....or maintain a journal, your opinions will play the role of main character here! no one to judge, no one to intrude, no rebels!! 3) every phase of life holds a specific group of people...greet them with kindness and cherish their presence! 4) do not let your past memories ingulf you...people come and go...that's life...that's why I say make loneliness your home , for when u come back after greeting the crowd u won't feel the need of someone to be happy again!!! Thanks 💗
