Last Wednesday, Nigerien military officers announced they had overthrown President Mohamed Bazoum, a close ally of the United States and France. ECOWAS, an economic bloc of West African countries, has threatened to take military action unless the coup is reversed by Sunday. But the leader of Niger's new military junta has vowed to defy any attempts to restore the former president to power, while Burkina Faso, Mali and Guinea - all, like Niger, former French colonies that have undergone military coups in the past three years - have warned against any foreign intervention in Niger. Meanwhile, Niger's new leaders have announced the country will end military cooperation with France, whose outsized presence in its former colony is a major source of resentment in the resource-rich but still poverty-stricken nation. We speak to Nick Turse, an investigative journalist and contributing writer for _The Intercept_. He recently revealed that one of the leaders of the coup in Niger, Brigadier General Moussa Salaou Barmou, was previously trained by the U.S. military, as were the leaders of nearly a dozen other coups in West Africa since 2008. We also speak to Olayinka Ajala, a senior lecturer in politics and international relations at Leeds Beckett University, who says Niger and its neighbors must tread carefully in order to avoid a "very bloody" military conflict.

A French colony cannot be a democracy. France never relinquished their grip on their former colonies. In fact, France's involvement within West Africa serves as a destabilising force.

@@francoiseuwiringiye2255 France will not because thats the only way they maintain relevancy. One of the reasons I dislike the west's conduct is hypocrisy. We see the West knocking down countries in Africa and taking them over, but immediately call Russia evil when they are doing the same. (Hell the west just wanted cheaper oil and natural gas, if Ukraine didnt have either of those, their only use is a smooth ground invasion to Belarus).

And Niger Nigeria Congo are all west Africans who have destabilised EVERYONE and EVERY COUNTRY on the continent... To say this is only France who the entire continent needs no further reason the detest is ludicrous. France and West Africa have history spanning back to the same time frame as the births of the Roman Empire. Africa is not self sustaining nor can they even feed themselves. If Africa wants "independence" how do you propose fixing black tribalism when all blacks tribes want to reunite but cannot because Niger Nigeria rejects it! What do you then propose of the non black nations east of the Nile and south of the Zambezi? Are western nations going to somehow grow land for these people who are horribly affected because of what west Africa does at the behest of Western Europes "democracy"... Is the west and Asia finally going to admit how right South Africans were about giving over power. I don't see these discussions occuring, and again to try seperate France from west Africa is diplorable and impossible. It's the entire west that funds these people, they literally supply the world's ephedrine for big pharma and trillions goes into them to do this. This black tribalism cannot simply be fixed, as it was West Africa selling off Africans during the slave trade and they still doing it today. Likevis said, the world funds Africa and they just don't have money to refund normal citizens who taxes is used for this and no African wants to have a discussion on land. They still believe the continent has no borders and that noone is welcome here.

This is why I tend to take a neutral stance towards revolutions and coups. Often times the leaders of successful ones become just as tyrannical if not more so than the last and these types of fights tend to be more a fight to pick your poison rather than a fight of good vs. evil. Western colonialism is clearly very harmful to Africa but this feels like another autocratic, possibly even fascist regime in the making and it's very unclear which if any side is truly going to bring freedom and prosperity to Africa.

@boltstrike2787
@boltstrike2787 10 ай бұрын
@@aguilayserpiente It's just basic logic. Changing the order of things doesn't necessarily make things better, the new leader could be even worse. The burden of proof is on the revolutionaries wanting to change things to show that their leader is actually going to make things better for Africa instead of exploiting the African people for their own personal gain just like the U.S. is doing. Otherwise all it does it cause unnecessary violence and chaos while it doesn't amount to a hill of beans for the average African. Again, the new order needs to amount to more than just "old leader bad, new leader good". If you're going to pull the "cite sources" card, you first, because you need to prove that this regime will actually materially improve the situation in Niger instead of just exchanging oppressors and possibly making things even worse with an even more authoritarian/fascist regime.

Another great video featuring hard hitting journalism so that you for sharing! That said, with all due respect, I find it irresponsible that your last video posted is from 2 days ago! As far as I’m concerned, this is the only news organization who lives up to what it purports itself to be. You’ve opened my eyes to the plight of so many peoples around the world, in addition to all of the happens within our borders without fear of reprisal. For this and more I cannot thank you guys enough. For the first time in my life I’m beginning to truly feel informed, and about topics that truly matters - voices that need to be heard!

How do you expect development if the new leaders of Niger banned their own exports of uranium? They just stopped their #1 source of revenue. The truth is that Africans think their mineral wealth is like a bank account. The mineral wealth is not money that is ready to be spent. It must be mined, then refined, then sold. These African countries don’t have enough mining companies, because the mining companies find it difficult to transport the minerals, because there are not enough good roads for big trucks to use. African countries have been told for decades that they need to improve their roads and highways but they never listen. That’s why their economy is always so bad.

The Europe or USA did not just come to Africa and start digging out their resources. There's an agreement between them and the government. But the government and politicians always siphoned the money without using it to develop the country. We have seen cases where leaders will sweet talk the people to get to the seat of power and start stealing the public funds and leaving the civilians to suffer. If military is taking over democracy, can they do better or they are just after their own loots.... Majority of our problem is not Europe or USA, but our own black leaders due to their greed and selfishness.... Chasing out the Europe or USA will not stop poverty but come to the table and agree on new terms to booster the economy without directly funding the government due to their corruption.

If anything, Nigeria being a country that has had a series of purely greed-related coups straight off the bat which wiped out its own political intelligentsia for decades, is the last country that should be tossing criticism towards any other country about coup d'etats. Any outside action is the equivalent of the passers-by wailing louder than the bereaved at a funeral ... At least the Nigeriens recognize that they are being exploited to the core; being the richest per capita country in terms of resources with the most broke people on earth is quite a paradox. Let the people of Niger free themselves from the yolk of colonialism and sort themselves out. Come on ECOWAS, some understanding and a little help might go a long way on the road to African unity.

Now if they go in and start exploiting the ppl like the previous then it was all for naught, but if they simply want african ppl in control of African resources then tell the french/us/UK and whatever puppets to kick rocks. The west had the opportunity to do right by Africa for hundreds of years, now they want sympathy for their "efforts" because China and Russia have come around and said they can cut a better deal for the ppl and their sovereignty and African countries are taking that instead. There are no good guys, but when the surrounding countries tell the west to back up and let it happen that tells you all you need to know. Colonial exploitation will no longer be tolerated. @@vallee7966 Especially so in countries where endemic corruption, religious extremism, and ethnic tribalism run rampant. Of course, you won't have a stable nation state if institutions aren't respected, politics are ethnically based, and all internal problems are blamed on foreign interference or scape goats. History is littered with examples of this, but people refuse to heed the lessons of history. Of course, the real million-dollar question is how to put an end to the above problems without killing a bunch of people or crushing sovereignty to do it. People don't just wake up and abandon hundreds of years of cultural precedent or forget historical wrongs. If only the solution were simple, the people of Niger deserve better.

The questions raised by Ibrahim Traore deserve answers. The cynicism of the west raises the specter that the impoverishment of these west African nations is in great measure due to the neocolonial political and economic structures in these nations.Western democracy impoverishes Africans generally, due the the theft of the resources of these countries. It also should be noted that the French and Americans have made little to no progress in the "battle" against Islamic "terrorists" in the Sahel. This seems curious, as you have such military capability that appears unable to destroy these non-state actors. Given the condition of the masses, it is not reasonable to expect a return to "democracy" as defined by the west, to Niger, Mali, or Burkina Faso.

Where in this world has the West achieved success against terrorism? The anti-west sentiment is fueled primarily by France's failure in the Sahel. Prior to that, these nations and it's people, loved France and the West. They celebrated on the streets, when the French first arrived. Today, the terrorists carry out thousands of attacks, while in Nigeria, Boko Haram are finished. That aside, Niger is a relatively secure country, experiencing decent growth and development. The coup wasn't inspired by anything going on in the country, but rather the anti-french feeling that was taken hold in that region.

9:08 This is inaccurate, as it omits the fact that! 49 High level delegations out of the 54 countries on the continent attended. Of which 17 were led by their Presidents (Heads of State), 7 Prime ministers (Heads of Government), 5 Vice Presidents and Deputy Prime ministers, 10 Foreign Minsters (Foreign Secretaries/secretaries of state) and 10 Defence ministers, Minerals and Mining, Speakers of Parliament etc. Only 5 countries completely avoided the event (6 if Western Sahara - a 'de facto country' is counted). The most prominent presidential attendees being the President of South Africa and Egypt, which are two of the largest African economies. Nigeria was also represented by its deputy president, together they account for the bulk of the continents GDP. Being the top three, Ethiopia which is 7th also sent its Prime minister as did others like Tunisia etc. This is after immense pressure and threat of sanctions etc was put on all of them. So emmys report doesn't give an accurate picture.

@@stephenjenkins7971 How about just not showing up at all? If your life as president of a 3rd world country and safety+economic future of your people get threatened by the most powerful mil and econ blocks, the pressure was normous that even mild Finland sent threats. Would it have not been much safer to..just not show up at all like Ghana and Kenya (which are pro-west)? To pay token lip service to these threats is the best these other countries can do. If they all were in the anti-russo camp, they wouldn't have bothered showing up rather than sending full delegations, and signing large deals. After all, it's these delegations of experts and bureaucrats that flesh out and implement the actual deals signed.
