Belissa Escobedo, who played Milagro Reyes was my most favorite part of Blue Beetle for sure. Unfortunately, I am worried that Blue Beetle could be the best DC film of 2023 by default because of how mediocre the rest of the competition is. It is for the same reason that Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 is the best Marvel film of 2023, not counting Sony's animated Spider-Verse film. August 24, 2023, 4:21pm

I think they got many things right in this movie: * appropriate use of cgi, including using a physical suit that looked great * spot-on casting * good comedy * it has a heart and soul, doesnt feel inauthentic * does justice to the source material * sets up future storylines well and makes you excited for them The only downsides are its repetitive superhero themes. But if I were a kid and this were one of my first superhero movies (which is probably their target audience), it would just be flawless

It wasnt my first superhero film as a long time dc and marvel cinematic universe supporter, but when I watched this... I threw my jaw out the window Sure its a basic theme and story but it was A BREATH OF FRESH AIR AND NOSTALGIA from all the childhood movies I have watched. The childish humor of the characters supports my l8ve for it. As cheesy as the grandma having a mysterious past, I still enjoyed her character because it was a breath of fresh air. Is it the best movie? No. Bur at its time of release, it was what I needed to rekindke my love for the superhero genre

Yes and no, it is true that the songs played are songs we grew up with but the scenes did not match the songs. Some songs they played my mom used to play while cleaning up the house, other songs are played during weekend parties at my grandparents when my dad and tios were at the bbq. Definitely not car chases or anything alike XD I definitely do not like how they mock Latino families with their, over the top, jokes. So no, cultural references are not authentic but rather exaggerated. But yes, those song are part of our childhood, Maria la del Barrio was big too although I would've preferred for them not to sing the OP cuz that turned the joke into pure cringe... and I would've preferred if the family stayed out of it at the end...

The Nana scenes stuck out as I was home to visit for my own nanas 107th birthday and I got blessed by her each time I left the house including to go see this movie. My mom was freaking out El Chapulin Colorado was on the screen. The car ride back she was talking about how awesome it was to see him and that she misses the actor. I’m really happy they made this movie even though it did have so many elements from other superhero movies in it the Hispanic dynamic really did hit home and was nice to see as a strength on screen. I’m glad George Lopez was able to win you over in the end because his “over-the-top” character is very much familiar to me and safe to assume a lot of the Mexican community who have had that kinda uncle or family member in their life…I know I have lol Being Mexican, a lot of this movie hits rlly close to home and feels sincere and authentic to our experience and life; so while a lot of ppl might find it just ok or another run-of-the-mill superhero flick, it means a lot more to me and can appreciate a lot of the love, care, and honest and meaningful representation throughout. I hope this movie is able to make revenue and garner enough attention for a sequel, because this character and universe has a lot of potential. Edit: A lot of the criticisms, like his look, powers, concept and overall presentation aren’t completely warranted as that’s just exactly accurate to its source material. If this movie would’ve come out during the mid 2010s, before the superhero market had become oversaturated and reused a lot of ideas, it would’ve had more success and appreciation. Sadly, that isn’t the case, so there’s gon be those Iron Man comparisons and complaints of nanotech being used again on a superhero inspite of their suit being practical and the presentation being ripped straight outta Blue Beetle. The timing is just very unfortunate because it’s a rlly well-made movie with lots of passion and care put into it, which the same can’t be said for a lot of the marvel content being churned out lately to meet demand.

I literally typed in "please tell me blue beetle is good" because every time I like a movie I go online and people make me feel really bad about liking it by nitpicking every nonsense detail... so thanks :3 I really want to see more of this movie. Waiting for a sequel~

I was fully expecting it to be terrible. The fact that it's okay is pleasantly surprising.
@isaacrichter3269 Жыл бұрын
I had a great time with this one, but it's also a film that is culturally very specific and will therefore not connect with everyone. I grew up in Mexico, so I was salivating at the references to Macario and El Chapulín Colorado, as well as all the Spanish that was spoken throughout. IT is ultimately very generic in its plotting, but it has such charm that I couldn't help loving it.

Blue Beetle was released during superhero fatique and would've made more money if it was released couple years earlier

@UncalibratedAimbot Жыл бұрын
There is no “genre fatigue”. Only bad movie fatigue. If the hero films had kept up the quality there would be fewer complaints. Granted even if that happened there would be some people saying they were always trash. But you can’t please everyone 🤷🏻♂️

More franchise fatigue than superhero fatigue. Both Marvel and DC make questionable decisions which lose audience trust to their brand.

I'm not fatigued. I'm bored. Bring back the Russo Bros. Comic book movies went straight to hell in a hand basket after they left.

This review actually helped me appreciate the movie for what it is. It’s not the greatest superhero movie, but it’s not supposed to. Back to basics is what made it so fun in the middle of DCs disaster and Marvel's over complicated laziness. Would’ve loved it as a kid.

Jaime came out BEFORE the New 52, just barely. You can tell cuz his comics were colorful and optimistic. He debuted right after Infinite Crisis. Either way, been waiting forever for this film and happy to hear it’s getting mostly good reviews. Gonna see it this Sunday on National Cinema Day! $4 movie tickets, FOR THE WIN!
@benwasserman8223 Жыл бұрын
Yeah but I’d argue Brave and the Bold and Young Justice did more for Jaime than the comics. Hell, those cartoons did a good job streamlining Blue Beetle’s entire legacy status by comparison.
@clarktooncrossing3975 Жыл бұрын
@@benwasserman8223 True, save for one aspect: Jaime hiding his secret identity from his loved ones. That’s an aspect I found really refreshing and was annoyed to see it removed on both shows. More so on Young Justice when The Reach outed him to the whole world.

Honestly the movie feels fun like other super hero movies are all doom and gloom for the most part atm and this takes it a different way where its fun, interesting and yh a bit of 2002 Spiderman vibe. It was a refreshing film from Dark DC and if this is the start of the new direction for the new DCEU its off to a good start

I think this movie should have been released in October. I enjoyed the movie. What I noticed more while watching was at least 10% of my audience were kids and they were captivated and super into the movie. Having it released during a school year, counter programming the horror movies as a family movie, and spreading through word of mouth would have been the most viable option.

I would put this film at the level of the first Ant-Man. Nothing groundbreaking but it's decent comfort food type viewing, something I can throw on in the background and not hate myself for doing so.

I really liked this movie. It’s safe and cliche, but it has a strong execution. About the villains, I liked them thematically more than as characters. Victoria is a victim of discrimination, but rather than reject what her father stood for, she maintained it and used sexism for self-pity. Carapax as a race and class traitor worked and the reference to the School of the Americas is pretty ballsy considering the tone of the movie. But all that material is a bit wasted.

My thoughts on blue beetle. The beetle-mobile was definitely lethal and BB definitely killed the guy he stuck in the roof. Regardless, I don't think he needs to be 100% no kill as Blue beetle lore wise is a planet destroying super weapon. He's new to the tech and can't 100% control it...when he's having fun fighting and just kinda showing off. Which is the tone of the blue beetle in animation within the last decade (Batman the brave and the bold, etc.). I think it captured the tone of blue beetle that I personally expected. The family portions were pretty cheesy, but well done. I personally find it to be a good start to a new DCMU. I also like the body horror of a cellular level connection of the suit itself. Yes, there's a couple deaths, but as a normal person in their situation, it's understandable. And Jaime telling the suit not to kill a couple times for it to follow that directive even when it knows he wants to in a specific moment captures the spirit of blue beetle I was looking for. The beetle, Khaji Da, doesn't actually care whether it kills or not (as proven by it letting him kill by accident fighting foot soldiers) it cares about the protection of it's host to a fault. Jaime is just a random dude trying his best and failing a bit. So a death here and there, I can forgive. He needs a better villain he can go more all out against. As his abilities are basically if Ironman, venom, and green latern had a figurative baby of abilities.

I hate that some people feel the need for every comic book movie to be groundbreaking, I had a very pleasant time experiencing a lighthearted, fun movie that kept its faith to the comics.

My only complaint was the villain was a bit lackluster and her dialogue was really corny but everything else was amazing the death had me in tears and i found myself cackling multiple times throughout the film. Glad to see Xolo expanding his career!

People keep talking about the learning the power scene not being original, but how do they expect it to go? Theres only so many ways to do a scene like that. Do they want a scene of him sitting in a classroom studying it in a text book or something? Thats like saying a Star Trek movie lack originality because the Starship leaves space dock in it. Not everything can be original all the time and just because a film follows familiar beats doesn't mean it's bad. It feels a lot like film bros today don't know what they want, they just know what they don't want and I feel like a lot of them have lost the ability to enjoy a fun popcorn movie.

5:35 I’d have forgiven that annoying cliche if Jaime’s retort was about the villain’s mother. Something like: “No. YOUR love for YOUR family makes you strong.” That way instead of saying something about his family that we’d already seen through the entirety of the movie, Jaime would be comforting the villain and revealing his cliche assessment to be nothing but a coping mechanism to deal with a tragic event.

Iron Man’s nanotech is the worst thing to happen to Blue Beetle. He’s had all of this stuff since infinite crisis in 2006. When he was first created. Now idk when the comics first gave nanotech to iron man so it’s possible he did have it first, but it feels incredibly disingenuous and ALWAYS rubs me the wrong way when people say he’s lifting from Tony.
