Under Ángel Manuel Soto’s direction, Blue Beetle is a superhero movie that sets itself apart within the bloated genre through the deeply connected bonds of Jaime Reyes and his family. Xolo Maridueña is wonderfully cast, able to convey Jaime’s reluctance toward superhero-dom and the fierce protectiveness he feels for his family and community. His Mexican-American identity isn’t just set-dressing, it’s vital to the character and the plot of the film. Though genre cliches and the villain’s relatively uninteresting motivation impede the momentum of the third act, the emotional force behind the movie is enough to make it worth a watch.

The movie wasn't really faithful to the source material. OMAC was a superhero not a powered suit of armor. And the person who would transform into him would do so through the Sattelite brother eye. Also the scarab was an evil alien weapon created by the Reach to take over native civilizations on the planets it landed on. None of that is hinted within the movie unless you take the opening credits as foreshadowing for the sequel. Also the scarab tends to be more assertive than depicted within the film.

It avoids the trappings and cliches of comic book movies...if you leave out the sweet but goofy protagonist with a heart of gold, the obligatory first suit up sequence that stops just short of disaster, the proud family that stands by him in the final battle and the suit that forms a symbiotic bond with the hero after they struggle to understand each other. Yeah sure if you leave all that out it's wholly original and refreshing.

🚨 BLUE BEETLE SIMPLE DCEU AND DCU FACTS: Blue Beetle the Movie is part of the DCEU; but, the same Actor will be a different version of the Blue Beetle in the DCU. Yes their will be reference’s in this movie of MOS. But in the future this Blue Beetle will same Actor but different version. Not difficult, Gunn said initially some Actors/Character would stay; some will go in the Reboot. All who stay are different versions of their character and others are recast.
