Coach Pete Bell (Nick Nolte) punts the basketball and gets ejected from the game.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Blue Chips examines greed, cheating, and "winning at all costs" in the world of college basketball. Nick Nolte plays the stressed-out coach on the verge of his first losing season, who hits the road in search of new players not already signed by a bigger school. He finds three prospects: a precision Chicago shooter (Anfernee Hardaway), a giant farmboy (Matt Nover), and a talented troublemaker (Shaquille O'Neal). All three, wise to the ways of college basketball recruitment, make excessive financial and lifestyle demands before they can be persuaded to come to the school; the coach, already haunted by accusations of underhanded dealings, doesn't want to dig himself a deeper hole but has no choice.

Nick Nolte actually was a kicker when he played football at Westside High School in Omaha. He also lettered in college ball and played basketball and was a catcher on the baseball team but beer and partying put an end to his athletic career which is a blessing in disguise since he may never have gotten into acting and given us amazing performances in Blue Chips, 48 Hours, Warrior, Weeds, and many more.

As I look through the comments here, I am REALLY shocked that all the basketball fans did not recognize Pete Newell at 1:15 to 1:16 sitting next to Nick Nolte on the bench. He was the coach who lost the Gold Medal game to the Russians because the ref's literally gave them the game on a technicality. Bob Knight thought the world of him. He was one of Coach Knight's mentors.
