Now imagine taking it to the next step, where you can actually look at movie, and then choose to buy it and have it downloaded to your apple tv or amazon library. Imagine how big you could actually make a retro Blockbuster Store, but also have it functional.

One company slightly worked on that (you can see their vr version on youtube) but didn't go quite that far. This seems a bit more polished but that one was bigger and had a few features this one didn't.

I get your idea but it would still not have one of my favorite parts of going to a physical store. I used to love anticipating which new releases might still have copies left. Sometimes my mom and I would wait at the store hoping one would drop one off before we gave up to leave.

I don't want to take away from this video or the awesome VRChat version of Blockbuster, but I always feel like I'm the only one who DOESN'T get any nostalgia from Blockbuster. For one it doesn't feel like it was that long ago. Second, to me Blockbuster were always the bland corporate bad guys. I was more interested in the weird stuff I'd find at smaller video stores that Blockbuster eventually put out of business. So to me when Blockbuster went under I thought 'Good riddance'. Would still be really cool to walk around in one in VR though.
@retropulse03

@@SLIMECORE_TV I don't think most people ever got the chance to experience a video rental store other than Blockbuster and maybe Hollywood Video. They utterly dominated the market. I certainly didn't. People talk about them, but from my experiences they may as well have not existed.

As a guy I don't feel there are any stores left in malls that are for me, they all seem to be targeting "tweens" and women in general. There are no toy, hobby, gift, knife, pet stores anymore. The only reason I ever go to a mall anymore is the food court and even that has gone down hill since the pandemic. What few stores remain that sell something I would be interested in are boutiques that only carry high-priced items whereas stores "back in the day" would carry a broad range of items at prices for every economic class of consumer.

Spot on dude. It's ALL clothes. I remember arcades, gift shops, book stores, toy stores, comic stores, sharper image, etc etc. That's what made the mall so amazing, it was all these little focused mini-stores... Now it's just massively overpriced clothes and that one candle store that smells like death from all the scents mixing.

Cool!. They did a good job capturing the nostalgia but it makes me want to see all these places full of people working, shopping, having fun, hanging out. I'd like to see all these environments fully fleshed out with realistic graphics and be a completely interactive would. I think VR is going to be a great way for future generations to experience what it was like in past. Maybe the virtual mall will become a place where people meet up and hang out again.

This was so much fun; thanks for the walk down memory lane. I was a child when our Mall first opened, with Sears as the anchor. It was the first time I'd ever seen an escalator and my cousins and I rode up in down it a zillion times. Fast forward many years and I was there the day our Sears closed, and now our Mall is like a ghost town. I miss the 80's malls, with the chaotic fun colors and big hair and arcade noise and pet stores and big food court with the delicious smells, the cinema with the popcorn. I do most of my shopping online now. Amazon should totally make a VR mall for us to shop in, lol.

Pretty close. I remember visiting Blockbuster on a regular basis. Stores were way bigger, way more than one copy, movies covers all faced out with available copies behind them, entire walls of new releases and the checkout counters were between the entry and exit doors. A For effort.

God, I miss video stores. Oddly enough I didn't have a Blockbuster membership until pretty late in the game when they were starting to phase out. Usually went to a local video store in my area Video To Go or a Hollywood Video that were a little closer to me. When those two went out of business that's when I went to Blockbuster. Even then, though, I don't think I went too many times. I long for those simpler times, though. Sure streaming is convenient, but there's just something about a trip to the video store that just can't be replaced.

I used to work at Blockbuster for a while. I loved it and always loved going to the physical store to browse all they had. With all the new technology it was only a matter of time until they were no longer needed. But what did them in even faster was the lawsuits from being deceptive. They made a huge deal about no longer having late fees on their movies but instead just replaced it with a "restocking fee" for bringing items back late. But one of my favorite things to do while working there was putting wrap on the movies they were getting rid of but wanted customers to think they appeared brand new. I think we used a hair dryer on the wrap to tighten it around the movie. Good times. Simpler times.. miss it. And yeah, even to this day if there were still movie stores I'd go all the time, it's just not the same ordering a movie through your TV.
@OfficialSeth
@OfficialSeth Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I used to work there too. I really enjoyed it aside from the crappy pay and having psycho Karens yelling at you about late fees. But when I was younger some of my best memories were going to Blockbuster with my mom on a Saturday morning, getting four or five movies, and our Blockbuster was right by the grocery store so then we'd get stuff to make burgers or hot dogs, she'd get me a couple packs of Marvel trading cards and then we'd go home and watch a movie when lunch was ready.

Man I miss these days. It was an event every time you go get a movie, with snacks and everything. You go to the store and you only can look for so long before making a decision to rent something, therefore you experiment more and take chances on movies. Unlike today's time with streaming services, where you scroll all day and decide to watch something you seen already or nothing at all

I remember this. It's been so long since I've actually been inside of a blockbuster, it almost feels like it was a dream and I never actually went there. I still have a couple of blockbuster cases of games that I never returned.

Seeing this brings back memories! :) Brace yourself for a long-ass comment about happy memories story of Blockbuster. When my brother and I were in elementary/middle school age, Mom would sometimes take us to a plaza on Friday after school. We would stop by Domino's Pizza to order a large half cheese, half pepperoni, and sometimes a large bottle of Coke. Then we went past the liquor store to Blockbuster Video so we could either rent a movie or a video game. Sometimes we would rent VHS tapes(then DVD's when they became a thing) of Disney movies, Land Before Time, etc. but after owning a Nintendo 64, we would more likely rent those games. XD I remembered we would rent Pilot Wings 64, Mario Party, Conker's Bad Fur Day(I'm surprised Mom allowed us to rent that game despite it's for 18+), Perfect Dark, Clayfighter's 63 1/3(we loved playing that game)and other games that I don't remember. We always have a rule for ourselves that before buying a game, we would rent it to see if the game is good along with good controls, etc. If it's bad and we hate it, we can always return it back and not rent it again. Bad news is that we'll be stuck with it for a weekend but we just suck it up and be glad we didn't buy it. If the game is great(i.e. LoZ: Ocarina of Time), we would buy the game with our allowance. During that time at Blockbuster, me and my brother would sometimes wander around the store(ours wasn't very big either but it's not small like this video) to check out the front covers of VHS tapes. My favorite would be the Horror section because of those creepy badass cover art and I loved reading the back for small info with screenshot pics of the film. :3 I didn't rent them till I was in middle school but I would rent Halloween, The Blob, The Thing, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, and other obscure B horror names(I forgot the names as it was so long ago). I would also find guidebooks for the games so we would check them out to see if we want to buy them with our allowance or not. I remember we bought The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time guidebook(we rented that game then bought it later on) and Pokemon Guidebook(we both had Game Boy pockets back then. My brother has Pokemon Red while I owned Blue). When ready to be checked out, sometimes we would buy popcorn and candy(I usually chocolate candy like M&M's or Cooke Dough bites while my brother has sour candies as he really loves that stuff) then head back over to Dominoes to pick up our pizza and Coke. We drove back home to eat then pop some popcorn and watched our movies or sometimes played N64 games while Mom is in a different room watching a movie she rented(she usually rents romance or comedy films). So that's my memory of Blockbuster Video. Sadly, that place closed down in 2014 then the rest of the plaza closed(some of the stores have been relocated while some went out of business). The plaza was demolished in later 2019 and now it's luxury condos in places. :(

Sometimes he does 4 movies on 1 screen 1 night. And, yeah, we have malls all over that still do pretty well. Ooo, Fireball Island is worth a small fortune today! You should check out "New Retro Arcade Neon"! You can make your own virtual arcade and actually play all the games! It's super cool and even has a bowling alley, movie theater, Skee-Ball and so much more.

Minnesota still has malls, not just Mall of America but others like Southdale mall, Eden Prairie mall which is where the movie Mallrats was filmed, Rosedale Mall which has the largest arcade in Minnesota, Valley Creek Mall which I believe is Minnesota's smallest mall, and a few others that are still doing well but some I believe are having trouble staying open.

I have a mall 1/2 hour from me. It's called Alderwood Mall. It's in Lynnwood Washington. It is only 1 story but has an AMC 16 across the street but still on Westfield property (private streets om the perimeter that take you to certain parking lots. Alderwood mall has the main inside mall with a food court. On the northern side of property, the inside malls has doors that lead you to the Promenade. The Promenade is 1 wing of the mall that is open air. That's where the Apple store, American Girl, Cold Stone, Cheesecake factory , Pottery Barn, and some other stores. In addition, a huge apartment complex called Avalon Alderwood has been made on mall property as of 2021. In addition, Costco (not on Westfield property) is basically next store to the malls property but on a different block grid. Alderwood Mall is still one of the last malls to actually be profiting. However, Westfield is a huge corporation, so that is of no surprise, especially when you can live on mall property. Northgate Mall WAS and used to be the closest Mall around. However, it was the oldest Mall in Washington state. It was torn down right before the pandemic. However, it had NOTHING to do with PROFIT LOSS. Because of profits, gains, and other business opportunities, it has been converted into Northgate Station, which is not a Mall. Simon malls who still owns the property, had the city convert the space into a campus for The Kraken. It's still being developed. The rinks are open so the Kraken has a space to practice but also hosts an outside rink /court for public use. Only 7 stores from the original store survived. Simon Malls evicted all other stores including Nordstrom and JCPENNY, and the food court. Only Chipotle, Verizon, Xfinity, T Mobile, Stanford, Red Robin, Barnes and Noble, CPK, Azteca, and Bank of America is what was left film the original Northgate Mall. 1 new fast food eatery opened on the property recently. But Northgate Station is not a Mall. It's more of a community center/ campus for the Kraken. The Kraken is Seattle's NHL team. It's also called Northgate Station, probably because that's where a light rail station is located. Hence, it makes sense for the center to be called Northgate Station. But I miss Northgate Mall. The only reason to go to Northgate Station is to go to Chipotle. Lol. The Northgate Station is basically a major hub of transportation. While there is only 1 light rail, that's where daily 9-5 park their cars then jump on the light rail to go to work or park at the station to avoid expensive Downtown Seattle parking prices. Regal Cinemas also has a major complex across the street with a few more food places, including a Ramen restaurant. I'm not sure if Simon owns this property. But it also hosts HuGE mega apartment complexes. On the opposite side of the mall is a section called Northgate North with Best Buy, Target, Dick's Sporting Goods, and Petco. I'm not sure if Simon owns this property access from Northgate Station. Mall companies probably are starting to realize a mall by itself may not stand. It's better to build a multi-functional space so people have commodities and a sense of community or entertainment. It's not enough just to be a mall. Northgate Station will be successful because of the light rail but also families who want to hang out on the Kraken campus. Alderwood Mall is successful because you can live on mall property and be close to entertainment and commodities, as well as Costco. But if you have a mall that's 20 minutes away that doesn't have any major chain restaurants and has no residents living within a block, then that mall may be dying since it lacks a sense of it being multi-purpose. However, despite malls closing nationally, Simon Malls thinks that American malls may make a comeback.
