Minor quibble - the filter is usually installed into the cap (until it clicks), and then screwed into the housing as a complete unit. Probably won't make a difference, but "cap first" is considered best practice.

I would recommend buying the 36mm socket for the oil filter housing cap because it is made out of plastic and the edges wear down easily with a wrench. Top notch videos mate. You're like the Khan Academy of E46 ownership.
@nadimaziz42443 жыл бұрын
Great video. One item/feedback. Use 36mm socket. Easy to use and if you are going to change oil often, it will pay for itself. Using the adjustable wrench can easily damage the Cap, will cost a lot more to replace that compared to buying a 36mm socket. For me it worked out well as I have a Range Rover with M62 BMW motor and same 36mm socket works on that too.

Just changed my oil myself, Pennzoil Platinum 5w30, it took all 7 qts, I was taking to BMW dealership that had 70 dollar oil changes, but moved and all the ones out here want 150 plus, but the last oil change I got was at the dealer and there was no drain plug gasket🤦♂️ wasn't leaking so there ya go, 16,700 miles and it's brown, not black😎 Have the tie rods coming in, and probably gonna have to replace a rear cv axle. But I think putting new shocks all around just encouraged whatever parts were getting weak to just go out. Still drives like a champ, only slight vibrations, and you've been helping me through most if not all these issues👍

great video. however i have one issue with your procedure. i actually cracked my filter housing cap by trying to remove it with an adjustable wrench as you have done. luckily i had another one in my shed. but i had to go to my local mechanic and borrow a 36 mm socket in order to get it off at all. i would recommend to anyone doing this to always use a socket to remove the filter housing cap.

Thanks again for great video. I dont know which way is correctly but usually i take that oilfilter cap to table, clean it, replace that big o-ring and then i put filter directly in that cap. Then i install cap+filter to its housing and tight it to 25nm. This is actually first time i see that someone install that filter element directly to oil filter housing. As i said, i dont know which is correct way, i think both will do just fine.. :)

@50sKid7 жыл бұрын
You're overthinking it a little bit. All you need is any synthetic oil that meets API-N (America) or GL-5 (Europe) specifications. 5w30 is the best all around oil for most climates--if you get cold winters, find a 0w oil.
@BimmerDope7 жыл бұрын

@AndrewDiaz14047 жыл бұрын
Use LL-01 in your BMW. You can use any oil selector on any oil site like Pennzoil or Castrol and they all say LL-01. Doesn't matter if it's 5w30 or 0w40 as long as it meets LL-01.

Thanks again for an awesome video. I have a couple questions. First of all I have a 2003 330i e46 BMW 1. My first question is: I know I to have to jack up the car to get under it but, is it ok to change the oil with only the front end elevated. I do not have the ability to jack all four tires off the ground. Basically, I'm wondering if the oil will drain properly. 2. It looks like there was a cover over your drain plug area. Will my car I have the same cover? Also, thanks again for answering some of my questions about another video you posted. With the help of one of your other videos, I'm going to try to tackle my check engine light this weekend. I'm getting the "P0174 Bank to system to lean confirmed". I already replaced the bad vacuum hose from the fuel filter up into the engine and thought that fix the problem but the light came on again with the same code. Thanks again and know that you are helping a lot of people out.
@50sKid8 жыл бұрын
+pearlmcp Yeah it'll drain just fine--better, in fact, by just raising the front wheels. If you still have the cover, that would be amazing. Some how they just seem to disappear, lol.
@pearlmcp8 жыл бұрын
+50sKid hi again. What did you used to jack up your car with? I have borrowed a low-profile 2 1/2 ton jack but when I put it under the car it's not long enough that I could actually pump it up. Do you have some other means or what type of Jack do you use? Thanks again.

As I understand it the air we breath is about 80% nitrogen. Filling your tires with nitrogen means you go from 80% to 99% nitrogen. Hardly worth it for anyone other than some special race teams in my opinion.

great vid as usual. im experiencing some slight engine knock under normal driving conditions, and much more pronounced under load. Im thinking since the car was only driven 2000 miles a year for 16 years (2000 320i) that there may be some carbon build up. What do you think of those oil additives used for 10 minutes immediately before an oil change? second question: my car had been sitting for about 2 and a half weeks. I asked my wife to start it and let it run for 15 minutes. she starts it and shuts it off after 30 seconds. the next morning, it wouldnt start Im pretty damn sure the problem is cylinder wash down, so I'm gonna put a table spoon of oil in the cylinders tomorrow (did it before with my volvo 960 when i lived in the US). But one of my friends just told me that I could just hold the accelerator down to the floor when im starting the car, and the problem would be solved. I've never heard of that before. does that even make sense?
