Tarik Kaya if it’s low yes you can just top it up. But you can also drain/fill the system several times in a row like shown in this video if your fluid is dark/dirty.

The black round plastic housing with the hexagonal nut on the top just to the immediate left of the power steering fluid reservoir has a pleated paper cylinder filter inside.The housing just unscrews & the filter is simply pushed on over a central stem. The part number for a Fram filter is ch8081.

Hello! This's the right solution, but what about the filter changing? Need to change all the reservoir with the filter in it. All the BMW require ATF (red) fluid. Can read on the cap of the reservoir.

Yes you can use the turkey baster method to suck out all of the old fluid from your brake fluid reservoir and fill with fresh fluid. However to properly complete the flush you will need to bleed fluid from all four corners of the car at each brake caliper to flush the calipers and lines - then top up the reservoir again.

The filter housing to the left of the PS reservoir holds the oil filter- typically you replace that filter with every oil change.

@BIMMERZEITT

It does, yes. I’d recommend swapping the reservoir with new cap (seal built into cap) and replacing the lines as well if leaking. Probably the most common m54 leak are the PS lines.

Would that fluid be warm and then check it or can it be done with cold? I used CHF11 with my BMW (cold engine/fluid) and filled it half centimeter under max line. My steering fluid came through somewhere and all of it leaked to ground or "exploded" to my engine bay :DDD Any tips?
@BIMMERZEITT
@BIMMERZEITT 4 жыл бұрын
Bahcoboy good question, I’ve always done it cold and never had any issue (across many, many cars and years). Like most fluids there is likely some thermal expansion; sounds like you overfilled or something else serious is going on!

I don't know who to understand I've got mechanics on this comment site saying to use automatic transmission fluid red or then other mechanics they only use CHF which is green and then some guys are saying if you mix it to you're going to ruin your seals and blow up everything I don't know it's left or right I don't know where to go I don't know what to do but I did go to the d m w dealership and they gave me a bottle that says steering fluid and also CHF Central hydraulic fluid so I'm assuming I don't know I don't know what I'm assuming I don't know what to do but I'm going to stick with what the BMW dealership gave me
@BIMMERZEITT
@BIMMERZEITT Жыл бұрын
Peter, BMW cars use both CHF11-S and ATF (red) for power steering systems. It depends on the year and model- BMW used different fluids in different years/models. Research based on your VIN, also what does the reservoir cap say on your car? Sometimes the sticker that specifies fluid type falls off as well, so it’s not 100% reliable. Unfortunately you can’t go on existing fluid color either, because previous owners may have put in the wrong fluids in years past.
@APPBURY

Tittle of the video says "Power Steering" service. Are you changing the Transmission fluid or the the Power Steering fluid?
@BIMMERZEITT
@BIMMERZEITT 8 жыл бұрын
+APPBURY Correct, this is a power steering fluid service on an E39 that requires ATF fluid for the power steering reservoir. Some BMW models including X5's do not use ATF for power steering; they use CHF11S for power steering fluid. You will know which type your car requires by looking at the sticker on the power steering reservoir cap.

How can it be power steering fluid if the bottle that you are pouring in says transmission fluid
@throughtheapex6506
@throughtheapex6506 4 жыл бұрын
@@joeymac9413 A more correct description would be hydraulic fluid... auto transmissions and some power steering systems (most BMWs )use ATF which is a red hydraulic fluid with a higher boiling point that standard clear power steering fluid. Clear power steering fluid in most BMWs will boil over, sometimes causing fire from fluid landing on exhaust, other times burning up power steering pump from running dry. ATF is inexpensive and readily available.

@@leitor928 you should look for any atf fluid around that era, on the cap of the power steering it should say atf fluid type, this is a risky change, there are mix opinion some say to use new synthetic power steering fluid but I am against it, I know with WRX it says the type of atf fluid, the cap should say, even if the type is on the real cheap fluid it would be the best fluid for it, as the car uses older tech fluid but doesn't mean is not good, a friend of mine changed his WRX with new power steering fluid it killed the whole system, then after he changed and used the right atf ii which is like a 5 bucks fluid it runs like dream. Let me know if you call says atf which number should have it maybe.
