More BMW 540i DIY - After soaking the axle in rust off I finally managed to get it removed with the help of Matt from GreshM Performance. Now all that was left is to re-install it back in to the car which requires some grinding, tweaking... and just like the removal, some serious hammering.
It turns out all BMW's are very tight like the e39, so this procedure could be applied to any model, not just the old 5er.

With the proper tool it’s a 1 min job instead of an hours long struggle.... ask me how I know.

Well looks like I still have fun ahead. I still need to get it off and then get axle out. Hopefully this weekend. Then new bearing. Cheers for the final vid. Enjoy the ride again.

Well if it's any consolation at all David I live in Canada (Calgary) and because of the snow and cold, Salt on the roads to melt the snow etc etc. Our cars can be terrible things to work on. If you're doing a wheel bearing here start with stripping out the small bolt on the caliper (The "Hex" or "Allen key" one) that holds it on. Drilling it out or whatever you can to get it out. (Tiger Torch is preferred). Then every bolt/nut from there on in is a guessing game with teeth clenched and prayer then swearing which is big out here as well. We are also big on pullers. We won't even go into a job like this without a set of pullers to help with the insanity. After all that we then get to the point where we take the pullers throw them in the bin give up break down and pay the mechanic to do the job and spend the winter saving our money to pay off the credit card we used to pay the mechanic. Job Done!! Canadian way! LOL.

thats why you leave the nut on when youre beating it out, if you intend on using it again anyway

if you press in the axle on the floor before installing the hub, how can you get the 4 hub bolts in place?

I have to make the same on the e36 axle, exact same thing, chamfer the axle to make the nut go in, after all that the axle dont go in the hub, i assemble the axle out of car, is easy to do, because splines have rust and trash and is super hard to fit again.

How much for a remanufactured axle? Has to be easier and more cost effective
@ZeroTo60Tube

It was a few hundred dollars. There aren't any locally for the 540 and international freight on it was a killer. Although it would have made the wheel bearing fix very expensive I was close to just buying a new axle

When they said the e39 was the last beemer you could fix with a wrench im not sure this is what they meant.

Hey man nice work! the build is looking awesome. I have been following for a while and I wanted to ask you zeroto60 guys about an obd scanner you pair with the android head unit you added to the car. I have a 540i of my own and I really would love to have this addition. Any suggestions? PS my heart was as broken as yours when I saw it rolling in the last episode! Cheers from NL.

Well I run the resler ibuss app. Its not a full OBD scanner but for our cars I think the functions are much more useful. Check it out if you have seen it already: www.ibus-app.de/index_en.html

well... thats my nigtmare... if it ever comes to rear wheel bearing, im f***d up... my nut is so rusted out, that theres no chance to loosen it... must buy whole assembly with axle.

I was surprised how tight everything was when the car has lived in a dry climate it’s whole life and doesn’t show rust anywhere. But I don’t know if a rusty car could be any harder than mine was to get out haha

@@ZeroTo60Tube i live in europe on salty roads but thanks to aluminium subframe and control arms (and perhaps good anti-corrosion coating on bolts) was every job fairly easy... the only thing that rusts is unfortunately the axle. (and rear trunk on my car :D ) btw, love your channel... i have the same combo - 530D and 335i :)

There is a specific tool to help with pulling the axle through, as someone said :-) www.turnermotorsport.com/p-580411-cv-axle-shaft-puller-wheel-bearing-hub-installer-kit-bavarian-autosport/. Don’t forget to zip tie your brake calipers to something so their weight is not suspended by the rubber brake line, as you can damage the line.

Thanks for the info and the link. The brake lines on this car are really good actually which is lucky. I figured if the hose can't support a couple kg its probably not safe to have on the car when its got 1,000psi or whatever the car runs normally when you apply the brakes

Its young Edgars fault who works in the CAD office at BMW. Axle clearance too tight, m3 bearing clearance too tight, n54 water pump wiring loom too tight on crossmember, n54 power steering pulley too tight to crossmember. They need to hire a bogan to pull them up on these shit ideas! How is the therapy going Dave 😆

No shame in the gloves mate, being the manager of a busy workshop I usually always wear gloves now, so much easier to just peel them off if I need to deal with other issues, and just better for your general health I guess, professionals and DIY guys alike all use some pretty harsh and carcinogenic chemicals while carrying out our labour of love..... if wearing "bitch mitts" can help you avoid some issues later down the track are they really so bad? If you ever come across the issue again with the driveshaft spline not seating in the hub you should first try smacking the face of the hub while jiggling and pushing in the shaft from behind (no innuendo intended) instead of undoing your hard work, also coat the spline with copper paste before fitting, I've had success with this method before on BMWs but the interference fit on yours was probably beyond this.
