Damn that was very informative ! I'm in the process to clean mine after buying the same motorcycle. One main jet was in 130 and the other 140, all the oil air mixture screen were badly tunned. I found the pdf version of the same service manuakl as yours but it help so much to have someone with great experience showing all the part and explaining why and how it should work. Thank you for the vid, my pegaso has been shutting down when i blip the throttle and possibly one of my diaphragms is not good. Its also running a bit lean on lower revs and this video gave the confidence to dissassemble them when i get the seal kit. TY.

Great video! I wish it was there 15 years ago, when I bought my '98 Aprilia Pegaso. So far I have 2 donor carbs to keep it running (one BMW's and one Aprilia's). What is the book you are checking in the video, is it for BMW only?

Hi, The best place is to look in the workshop manual as sometimes they are supposed to be fitted in a different place to what you may think.. Most needles are set in the middle setting. But on this bike the manual stated that it was in a different position. So, it was good job I looked.

Hi, I would be more than happy to sell them, but I have already sold those carbs some time ago. I have just gone and had a good sort through all my remaining F650 spares, just to see if I had one. I did find a lot of new carbs parts, etc, but unfortunately no float bowl. So sorry, as I would love to help. Have you tried Motorworks, as they do a lot of s/h parts, as well as new BMW stuff. they are a great company. If not try motobins

If you’re struggling with the screws it might be because they’re not Philips. If it’s a Japanese Kehin or Mikuni, the likelihood is that the screws are actually JIS (Japanese Industry Standard). If so, you need a set of JIS screwdrivers. Vessel make good ones. That might be why the screws were already mashed up when you got them. Most of us learned from such mistakes in the mid 1970s…! 👀🧐😎😜

Hi Many thanks for your comments. Yes, you are right. I have a large collection of screwdrivers to ensure I get a decent 'grip' when using them. I did not know that they were JIS, your experience is better than mine. Some people make a real mess by using the wrong tool, and then we have to try and remove it so that we can then replace it with a new part..

@@RestorationBiker The differences are subtle and difficult to see with the naked eye. But if you Google it there are decent diagrams detailing the angles and proportions of each. The Philips screw heads were actually designed for the screwdriver to cam-out under too much torque - because they were intended for wood screws, not machine screws. The tightening (and loosening) requirements are totally different. This means that there are two opportunities to ruin the heads by using the wrong screwdrivers. One of the greatest failures of the Japanese system is that it failed to adequately market the JIS system globally. Or rather the rest of the world failed to pay attention. Vessel is regarded as a niche manufacturer, yet back in the day it was Vessel’s impact drivers (with brittle NON JIS bits) which we bought from Exchange & Mart, to extract the JIS screws from our Hondas, Yamahas, Suzukis etc. Kawasaki riders didn’t live long enough to work on their engines…!👀🧐😎😜

The flat head screw is the main jet. The other jet in the tube is the emulsion tube and can be 'tapped' out. They do not always come out that easily.

i have a 1998 bmw f650st i overhauled the carbs but cant get the bike to start only if i spray brake clean cant get the left carb to work the float looks good any ideas

Hi, This could be a number of things, but as the bike runs with brake cleaner forced into the manifold it confirms that it is fuel delivery. So, as you have rebuilt the carbs, it could be fuel supply. The fuel tap at the tank, or the breather in the fuel cap!. Try setting up a remote fuel supply to the carbs, and see if that alters anything. It may be a 'sticky' needle valve in the carbs too. Check the amount of fuel in each carb by removing the float bowl drain screw.

Hi, Yes, these carbs can be very troublesome. Just take your time, and if you can replace the 'O' rings that go under the float valve seat. and check the breather is clear.

Great video 👍 I'm trying to figure out where the hoses connect. The right side there are two outlets right above the bell mounts and there is one outlet above the diaphragm. On my bike I have two hoses running to the exhaust and 1 hose running to the vacuum. I'm guessing the one hose that runs to vacuum connects to the outlet by the diaphragm and the other two outlets connect to the exhaust hoses?

Hi, From memory (I haven't got my F650 now) there are a couple of hoses going from the carbs. One near the diaphragm is a breather and is open to the atmosphere. The other is the fuel delivery pipe which goes to the float bowls via a split delivery system.. Not sure what hoses you are mentioning that go to the exhaust. If you can send me a picture I may be able to help further

Hi, I always remove the carbs then remove the cable once the carbs are off. That way you get more room to move and it is easy to see what you are doing.

Just curios as to what work shop manual you are using in this video? I have the Haynes but I'm not seeing anything in detail about the main jet and number of turns.

Hi, I am using the Clymer manual for this job. It is much more in depth. Usually when you rebuild carbs the basic setting is 1.5 turns out. But on reading the manual it says 4.5 turns. My first reaction was 'Really??' But yes that is the correct number of turns out for the pilot air screw. I have the Clymer soft backed version of the manual

Awesome thanks. I just opened the float chambers and I'm only seeing one pilot jet (located on the right chamber) the left chamber has no jet. It's a mikuni bst33 dual carb for a 97 Funduro.

Lol.....I bought a carb kit for my '99 F650ST last year, and put off doing them, as apparently they are notoriously tough to get off the F650, and my bike runs OK (although I have to make sure I turn the petrol stopcock off, or the bike floods and it's a pain to start). This video is an incentive to get the job done....once the snow and frost goes.

Hi, Yes, the repair of these carbs is fairly easy. Just take your time. I know what you mean about they are a pain to remove, and re-fit. The secret is don't take the airbox off. Sounds impossible but try it and see. If the weather is cold you can make it easier by using a hairdryer on the rubbers to soften them up. They are impossible to work if they aren;t heated first. I may do a carb remove video to see if it will help. Thanks for the post. Take care, looking forward to getting back out on the bikes.
