No diesel option will be a big issue in Ireland and the UK, especially given that BMW’s main competitors will still continue to have diesel models in their line up and yes the prices are really on the high side! Range is not great on the EVs and the extra weight will be hard to hide on the handling front. Hmmm…. as an owner of a current 520d I’ll be shopping around when it comes time to change😮

It does drive really well so they’ll be forgiven on that front but the price may well be a stretch too far for many typical 5 series buyers.

@@NobbyOnCarsa bit of a stretch is putting it mildly. If I decide to buy the new i5 because there’s no more 520d I’d have to shell out what the old shape 520d cost plus the price of a brand new Ford focus to get said i5 . I’m afraid the new i5 will become a rare sight

Kind of odd since over here in Belgium we do have the 5 in diesel ... So this must be an Ireland specific thing.

@@xConundrumxNo diesels of new 5 series model for Ireland or the UK, and I think other parts of Europe and elsewhere in the world also that historically had diesel options. Mercedes and Audi will likely see some new customers as a result.

Great review as always nobby. Like you said ,the price is now outrageous . The fact that the 520d is gone (I have the current one myself) will have a massive impact on sales . The person spending 60 grand on one will not pay over 90 for the electric i5. I’m not a fan of tesla , but the brand new only launched model 3 in standard range with metallic paint and nicer wheels is €46000 . HALF the price of this. I know the bmw build quality is better but double the price 😂

I just received the i5 edrive 40 and it is a great experience to drive! Had an i4 before and this definitely feels upscale and of course more spacious. If there’s any negative about it, it would be the cluttered and still confusing I-drive 8.5, yes it’s better then the 8, but has room to simplify.

Great review. However the whole BMW range as a value proposition is over. The costs of BMW cars is becoming ever more expensive, particularly when you look at the price of this car and the newly announced X2 which starts at €70,000. I currently own a 2023 BMW 330e and the cost cutting on that car is clearly evident. BMW charging for every extra as part of their "Packages" when compared with the likes of Tesla, Kia, Hyundai giving these extras as standard makes it more difficult to swallow the cost of all BMW models. The efficiency of the battery in this car is not particularly good either given its size. The cost of this car in Ireland with the base technology and comfort pack with sun protection glass is over €97,000! There a wide range of very good cars at half this price with all and more features that are on this BMW.

Sat Nav Auto zoom at junctions is there, you just need to activate it with a single tap on the bottom left of the screen. You can see on the video that it’s set to MAN (manual zoom) currently

As an i4 M50 owner, one of the first in the country, I was all excited about the i5 coming. I love the car but the price point is terrible. Understanding that there is a premium to be paid for electric over an ICE car I understand the i4 price logic. I would’ve expected the i5 to be a step change above that but not €25k. The M versions of the i4 v i5 being €30k. It should be half that at most. Pre taxes and VRT etc the i5 M60 in Germany is €8000 cheaper. Thats BEFORE taxes. We are being hoodwinked here. I was going to buy one until that. Similar power just bigger body and it’s €30k more-eh no….ill keep my i4. Get real with the pricing and we can talk. Good review as always thanks

I own an i4 M50 aswell. I drove the i5 (both variants), and it’s a considerable step up in quality and driving dynamics IMO. Straight line speed however I think the i4 M50 is a fraction quicker than the M60. Lots of added extras in the Irish M60 that have to be optioned in on the German spec. That said if I was spending +€125K on an EV I’d be going Porsche Taycan 4S instead of the i5 M60.

Price premium of an EV shouldn’t be a given, it’s due to legacy manufacturers being unable to produce at scale and efficiency. Ergo, look at Tesla and BYD on producing EVs at scale and price competitive to ICE cars

I think the car looks really well in that colour. I’d probably have oyster coloured leather to contrast against the dark exterior colour. There’s a reason they killed 520d nobby. How many i5’s would they sell if there was a diesel option in Ireland.

In this colour, it looks quite good. But the regular car in a light colour….looks like a Toyota Camry from the 90s. A crime, as the 5 was always BMWs best looking car.

Here in Denmark, we are lucky that EV cars are just as cheap as fossil cars. This is because there are no taxes on EV cars. So I am lucky enough to have just ordered a 40 edrive. I don't understand that PHev is highlighted as sweetspot. It is a totally outdated and expensive solution. I think it's a completely cool reinterpretation of the 5 series. I've had two 520ds myself, and this one is in a completely different class
