BMW K1600GT: the ultimate luxury sports tourer? | MCN

As a previous owner of a K1600GT I can attest that the 1600 is an unbelievable sport touring motorcycle. What stopped me from ordering a 2022 (and 8 was waiting and waiting for its launch date) was the massive recall on the previous generation transmission of which my bike was part of. BMW had a known problem with the six speed transmissions in this bike that they finally had to address. My dealership when I brought in in for a 3000 mile oil change wanted to keep the bike, then order the parts for the transmission and then repair it under recall procedures. They said the repair would take 8 -10 weeks. The make thinks clear, I dropped my bike off for a 3000 mile oil change and they wanted to keep my bike for 10 weeks. When I refused, the dealership made documentation that I refused recall service on the transmission and I will not be covered for any transmission failure even while still under factory warranty. I told the dealership to just order the parts and when they come in I would bring the bike back in for the recall. I never heard back from the dealership and they refused to remove the notation of refusal to repair the recall on my owners notes. The dealership gets paid handsomely for this transmission recall and it’s about money. Once they have your bike tied up you are their customer and they get paid. For that reason I could buy a 2022 K1600. Also the bike had a very bad alignment problem in the front end (well documented by owners on the internet). If you took your hand off the bars even for a few seconds to adjust you clothing or gloves the bike would dramatically pull to the left, like really bad. Even just light pressure on the bars you would have to fight the bike to stay straight. BMW of course said this is normal or one time they could not duplicate the issue. Two sets of tires and the same persisted. Owners believe it had to do with the rotation of the huge motor that made it pull to one side. All in all, it could be an unbelievable bike, but some of the problems kept me from buying another one and dealing with the snobbish BMW service departments that don’t want to admit their bikes have problems is tiring. The 2022 K1600GT premium 719 option bike I had spec was $29,990 without a top case and I wasn’t going to take that risk again on a bike that I was happy to get rid of.

Sounds extremely like my experience with both the K1200GT and F650GS. The ergonomics of the R1200/1250GSA are a perfect match for me - the most comfortable, natural feel of any bike I've ever ridden - but I don't think I have the willpower to fight the dealers anymore.

I agree with you the 2022 is not as good as in my opinion as the 2015 model, which I ride. Sorry to hear that you got screwed over by the dealership. One bike I really love is the FJR 1300, plenty of grunt and good handling. Hope you are still riding and if so stay upright. I think that I might be going back to the FJR

The GTL sits more in Gold Wing territory, where this GT feels much more like a conventional sports tourer with its more upright riding position, poke and handling 👍

@@neevesybikes Fair enough - although of course the GTL would sit more with the Goldwing Tour if we're being picky ;0) I'm surprised to learn you feel the riding position is that much different from the Goldwing?? I'd also class the Goldwing as upright and conventional with good poke and handling (given its size). Anyway, I'm getting one of the big BMW's to ride soon, will do a comparison to satisfy myself....thanks for the video as ever, you are the best!

I had a 2012 K1600GT and toured on it extensively in Canada and the US. In that role it was fantastic. I could ride for hours in total comfort... like a 7-Series BMW on two wheels. That said, I found that, unless I was heading out on significant trip, it sat in my garage. It was definitely heavy to haul around as a commuter or for a Sunday ride. (I was fortunate enough to have more than one bike.) Secondly, living in Canada...it not unusual to find yourself on a rural road which suddenly turns from paved to unpaved. (I'd guess riders in the US and Australia experience the same.) On unpaved roads, even if nicely graded, I found the big GT a bit of a handful... perhaps a better rider would fare better! In the end, I traded for a GS which isn't a good as an all-out tourer (but is still very capable) but works for me across a broader range of riding. If you can afford a bike which will be used primarily for longer tours. go for the K1600GT... it's an amazing piece of kit.

I (still) have a 2014 BMW k1600 GTL Exclusive with 160 K KMS on it and thought I wanted a newer bike. Got a 2018 Goldwing and was never impressed with the ride. It NEVER excited me like my GTL. But after buying a new ‘23 GT I am so happy with this new bike. BTW, I am in the Texas hill country now punching up the miles.

Interesting comment about low-speed handling. I put 81000km on my 2008 K1200GT before consigning it to the "too expensive to fix" basket. Unsurprisingly I was keen when the 1600 first arrived and test rode one immediately. It was 50kg heavier than my bike - half a Honda Cub! - yet I found the 1600 easier to handle at low speed than the K1200GT I rode every day.

Weight distribution is much better on the K16. The big, heavy engine sits very low, and the ergonomics are also spot on. I find the K16 relatively easy to manouver at slow speeds, much-much easier than let's say the R18 Transcontinental, that bike is a chore to ride slowly.

Very nice review as always! I’m not countering any argument here but for me the RT 1250 is the top of the line in terms of what I am able to explore from a touring bike. For a sport touring bike I prefer the KTM 1290 GT. Thank you for the well done video and professional opinion ✌️

I agree the 1250 RT would be just right. Most of the creature comforts of the 1600 with a lot less weight. Re the KTM 1290 SD GT, put 20,000 on my 2019, and loved it (other than the engine heat)!

But, overall, if you like the bike for its purpose (sport touring), see that from the bright side: - At least in winter time you don’t need to spend more money on getting an electric heated seat! 😂 ✌️✌️

I demo’d a 2021 GTL, but never tried the GT. For me, the GTL was fantastic and I liked it a lot. I was also able to try the bagger which I also liked alot. I own a 2020 R1250 GSA and of course am spoiled by that bike, but the K1600 is really soul stirring for me. Now I also tried the R1250RT which was nice, but I like the feel of my GSA better. Am looking forward to checking out the new K1600GT . The white, red and blue color is also sweet.

Hi, from South Africa 🇿🇦. Interesting comments on ACC. I tried it extensively (2 days) on all different road and traffic conditions, and I think it's the best tech on a motorcycle since slice cheese. It is a game changer with regard to safety. If for example, you cruising along, and you get very slightly distracted (I know you shouldn't, but we all do), and a car appears in front of you, it slows you down, gently and calmly. I am disappointed that BMW chose to leave it out on their flagship touring motorcycle. I think it has more use on the K bikes than the R18. I have a 21 K16GT, and if the new bike has ACC, I would be trading in without second thoughts. I will hold on to my 21 model year.....

The 2018 and newer Gold Wing definitely overlaps a bit with this bike. Not as sporty on the twisties but more stable and comfortable touring. Plus lower center of gravity makes the Wing feel lighter. Put the newer Wing in sport mode and it will fly. Likely more reliable than the BMW and will run well over 100K miles - typically issue free.

The only thing you missed out is that it's not actually possible for normal riders to get these bikes, ordered in October, promised in March, date changed to May. So trips at Easter and May Bank holiday ruined by BMW. Maybe you could ask BMW why they have delivered bikes to dealers and journalists but cannot deliver to customers who ordered 6 months ago.

From about 05:00 on about radar.... I had a KTM 1290S with radar cruise, and yes yes yes perfect description, you become complacent, droning along among car drivers looking at their phones and their kids and their makeup mirror and reading a book and everything else but the road. Im sure it has a use, but i turned it off never to be back on. I replaced the bike with a 1250GS Rallye. No radar. Perfect.

It’s a bear of a bike to handle the one issue I had was matching my eye blinks with with the shifts and not running off the road. I took it back thanked them and went home on my Triumph Trophy SE which is plenty fast but maybe not as refined as the K1600GT. But the sound of that in-line 6 is unreal at full throttle it sounds like a Ferrari on 2 wheels. I find you sit in the K1600 similar to my trophy but you sit on an say an FJR, the Connie feels like a cheap K16000. But all big bikes are big and heavy especially on a hot summers day. Even I curse my bike for roasting my balls. But man when the roads open up and off I go….I’m giggling like a little kid knowing I’ve got no bike payments and 134 hp and 3 cylinders that sound like a pissed of beehive 😁😁😁😁

The Kawasaki IS a cheap K1600 that does many things better (it's faster both in acceleration and top speed, it's lighter, and has a higher load capacity) and it only gives up a little comfort. It costs less to buy, run and repair, it's way more reliable and rewarding to drive. The "soundtrack" keeps being mentioned but a C14 sounds awesome. What is never mentioned is the delay at low speeds between the right grip and the engine due to the long intake. I had both, kept the C14. Still grab a friend's K16 now and then for fun (it IS a great bike) but don't miss it at all.

I question the build quality, had 2 and the 1st one nearly killed me with a rear axle failure and the 2nd one never worked properly, it was constantly at the dealers and went after just 15 months.

Most of BMW customers don't mention this, the truth is that they are very unteliable bikes in general, specially compared to Japanese.

@ Agreed but MCN never have a bad word to say about them. In a 10 year spell of owning at least 2 BMW's each and every one of them had to go back for one reason or another, including being repatriated due to a rear axle failure at 60 mph.

Had a BMW K1600 excellent engine power BUT top heavy and clumsy at low speeds. Got a 2021 Goldwing Tour DCT and it’s incredibly better and easy to maneuver with much lower center of gravity and smooth plus great handling on twisties. No contest, Goldwing is #1

Had a Gen1 and also a XR and SDGT. They are chalk and cheese with the XR being far too low geared for serious touring. The KTM is cool for rider only. For two up touring with full luggage the K16 shrugs off the load with undented performance and comfort. The BMW comms system with matched helmets is seemless. 14 countries in 14 days, a single hit London to Monaco run, to cruising at 130+ on the autobahn in relaxed buffet free silence, to hitting the Alp's twisties in confidence makes this THE hyper-tourer bar none IMHO.

Love my k1600gt, not enough has improved for me to upgrade, not so sure on sat navigation, we have lost free roaming in Europe, so not having nav 6 inboard in dash a big loss, midrange no big deal, most euro 5 bikes oddly gained there. No blind spot mirror option, no adaptive cruise, no tester or dealer has yet to say will it take large smart phones in cubby hole and not wireless charging like RT, and it needs to loose 30kg very top heavy,BMW Lazy excuse for an update And good luck having a look at one now in dealers its been delayed and no date yet for demos. I have doubts it will come with adaptive Headlights, due to micro chip shortages, All 2022 GS,s this year coming with halogen bulbs and not L ED,S and no adaptive cruise for RT,s either due to world wide chip shortages

Once you get used to it, it seems "normal". Its just that nearly every other bike seems 'small' and a bit cramped. I've had mine for 4 years and love it. Around town, highway, backroad burns, I think it rocks in each situation. But then, I'm getting on a bit but still go right quick. Funny thing: While it has ABS, I've done 'handstands' on the bars and never once felt it kick in. I'm talking 70 to 20 mph in maybe 1.5 seconds or less.

If you have the key fob in your pocket, then the bike can sense that you're approaching or leaving. A dome light comes on. The follow me home is just like your car. The headlight stays on for a few seconds after you lock the bike.

BMW1000R look/perform about perfect for the street but I think ageing I will not buy another sport bike. Honda Monkey is on my wish list now.

Will never buy a K ever again. I had the Grand America in 18, new. I was very disappointed with the constant problems and running to the dealer every few months for F something else. Big recall they had, was a headache for me. Also, bad in high speeds, wobbles a lot. Dirty air, does not like this bike. Cold or Hot starts, always struggles to start, took twice to start it. Also, dealers are going away more and more and hard to find one close to you. Boy, I had enough and sold it. Went and got new 2020 Honda Goldwing DCT Tour. Damn, what an amazing machine. Like riding on air. And on top of that, ZEROOOOOO issues so far. I have 10k now and never once went to any dealer. Just an incredible machine. Not cheap, but worth it. You all go and buy the K….lol. Wait till you need repairs. Get ready with the credit cards lol.

Yes your goldwing flat 6 might sound like a porsche, but acceleration or pull like a 1600gt. They have a 3 year Warranty, they are well sorted now. Goldwing a different bike really, but still a great bike. Cars have been packed with tech for years, we just live with it now ,and would not be without

I would call it a luxury tourer but not a sports tourer. That title belongs to the S1000XR or similiar motorcycle like the KTM Superduke GT or Ducati Multistrada. Thank you anyway for a great review.

The K series engine is silky smooth. BMW, instead of adding more computer gizmos, should really focus on reducing its weight (350kg/771 lbs). There is many a time, you will have to push this bike around - for reverse parking, down a driveway etc. (not even considering the thought of picking it up if it falls over). Almost every reviewer has mentioned negatively about the 'weight' in their reviews. Active cruise control (not on this bike), is just a gimmick - as common sense should come into play to keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front. The weight issue is the only reason, I will never consider buying one of them.

Really? There are only two bikes in this category and I can see where they are very much the same now while each offering their own take on a selective elite luxury performance tourer. People looking for this kind of machine will not be making their decision based on weight or price. You either want a top of the line 6 cylinder tourer or you don’t.

The RT is absolutely more exciting. It leans more, it weighs less, and it has acc. The torque and hp are absolutely enough on the rt to keep the blood flowing.

@herman stokbrood no argument from me about how nice the GS is. But I think if one has no plans of doing anything more than a gravel road, the RT is the better tourer of the two. It's pretty insane that the k1600gt costs the same as the GS and RT.

@@lovelessissimo If excitement is what you are looking for and still want a shaftdriven BMW, the GS is probably the better choice. Otherwise go for the 1000 XR for excitement and a good touring capability.

If you go touring a lot - which I suppose owners of this bike do - then you know that involves a lot of riding through villages, towns and cities. A bike that is "a bit of a bus at low speeds" can in my opinion detract a lot from the general pleasure of touring. If you ride the Autobahn a lot, there is probably nothing that comes close to this bike.

You don't have to wait 10 to 15 years, look up a 2011 1600gt they don't loose value any greater than any other bike, it's problem free now, they have ironed out the problems they had. and best manufacturer warranty on the market by far.
