Fantastic Review as always, Thomas. Great camera work by Cornelius. As usual, love the detail and the fun driving parts - and as always, you drive so well, on road and track, with great commentary. Oh, and the M5 seems nice: understated exterior, lovely bright interior! You conclude by advising: 'Driver Training'. Yes, driver training... excellent idea! Whatever vehicle we drive!

You know what BMW really need to do? Build an F90 M5 wagon. The much improved newer E63 AMG S has one, and it is fabulous.

Absolutely leave the CD player in! I have 5-10 CD's in my 550i at all times and I never listen to the radio. I will occasionally stream Spotify but I prefer the lossless quality of CD's so PLEASE keep that! Great review, great car, great fun! Maybe my next car will be the M5 but the F10 550i is still an amazing car and can be had at very reasonable prices pre-owned, at least here in the states.

I would never compare this beauty with american muscle cars, this is an amazing car, can't be compared with anything that they have across the Atlantic. I can imagine how much you enjoyed it in making this review Thomas, great job as always.

Nice job Thomas. I just leased a 2018 M550i and it’s way more than most can handle. I cannot stop driving this car. My next lease will probably be the M5, I’ll give them time to fine tune this new version and get one on the tail end of the generation, replete with all the updates.

Francisco Sousa Personally, I find the Model S to be a better looking car than this new M5. This car's overall shape still looks too squarish for my taste. And it basically looks like a bigger version of the M3 sedan. In my opinion, the M6 Gran Coupe is far better looking than this new M5. It is BMW's best-looking sedan, in my opinion.

BMW M IMPOSSIBLE!!! Only the 720S and hypercars will get pass the Tesla Model S P100D at 80mph. You must be out of your mind, dude. Not even a 911 Turbo S, Huracan, R8 V10 Plus, 488GTB, 675 LT, Aventador S, can overtake the P100D at 80mph. Keep dreaming!

Tyran Mathurin no the model S is about out of breath by by 80. Really once ICE cars shift into second they’re accelerating faster than the Tesla. Speaking from experience, got stuck behind a bunch of Teslas when a weirdly large number of them showed up to a track day once.

Thomas - Great review! Always enjoy listening to your observations about the details and enjoy the sense of 'riding along' through the great videography. Based on your review it looks as though BMW is making a great effort to catch up with Mercedes ; Audi and Porsche. Perhaps over the next couple of years, if they keep producing cars like the new 5 Series M Version, they'll make up the ground they lost. Best Joe

BMW ///M It don't find that this car looks sexy at all. Well, at least not so much so to even talk about. But I agree that the E39 M5 looked better (although I still prefered the regular E39 5 series). But, in my opinion, the M6 Gran Coupe is the sexiest sedan BMW has ever created.

I love your reviews - keep it coming. I just signed up to trade my 2015 X6M for a 2018 M550i. I have to agree with you it is an extremely enjoyable car to drive. I have driven the x6m from Canada to California and back through Arizona and Utah. Amazing drive, seats were very tiring and equipment failed in the high heat. So when I got the opportunity to say goodbye to the X6M I took it - but I agree with you - for everyday driving - with performance - this is a fabulous car. I love the power and handling and can't wait to get it next Saturday. I was in two minds with this or the E 63S. I think the BMW finish is a lot more appealing. One of things that you should take the time to comment on is tires. The car I am getting has the Michelin sport - and I think they dont give value for money. On the X6M after only 6000 Km, i had steering shake, unstable handling. Unfortunately they are the only manufacturer for the X6M. The Michelin Sport plus is rated at 25K km with a caveat - they need to be rotated. Given that the cars have mixed tires, they are only rated for 12,500 Km. Makes it expensive in the ownership level. I haven't checked yet - but i believe Nokians makes the 19" tires. Too bad you are in Germany - else I would have let you drive the X6M with 5 mm tread on the tires. Really poor handling. This is where buyers are stuck with shelling out big bucks for tires, that are not off the shelf. Keeping an eye out for other reviews and I will update you as I enjoy the M550i

The subtleness of how the car is set out is amazing. Its a shame that in Australia the first edition is $229k. I cannot find the part with the seat colors - are you able to get them in darker color?

Nice detailed observations. Nit-picky cons I can think of -- no ceramic controls, wasted real estate to have a CD player, lack of USBs in back seat, slide cover over cup holders, manual (not auto) side sun shades. Also would love to see a recording option for surround cameras in case of an accident.

Happy New Year Thomas. Thanks for the effort and detail you put into your videos. I am a long time BMW fan, and first time owner of a 1 Series M Coupe. Due to our growing family, we need a bigger car and four doors! What better vehicle to shop for than the M5? (Except E63, but I'll watch that video next) Your summary at the end is perfect. The vehicle is designed to go beyond average every day driving and extend to more spirited driving and track work. My wife is closely involved with this purchase (as opposed to the 1M), and I have expectations that the 4WD solution normalizes the car for her everyday use. Hopefully the added safety systems and technology will reduce risk of "incidents".

Having owned several performance versions of BMW products, I am glad to see the next generation but think we may have reached a new phase in the industry now that vehicles can incorporate EV propulsion. While I have always liked the engineering BMW can bring to bear there is no denying in 2017 that BMWs are still more costly to repair and maintain outside of the warranty period. The technology is so complex that the car requires multiple trips to the dealership throughout the year to get software updates and patches for electronic faults. Not to mention the still recurring fuel pump failures -covered under warranty. I believe there is an opportunity for Tesla to do 'weight optimized' versions of their cars where more effort can be invested in handling. A track option package for a Tesla would be a game changer. When I hear all the noise and see the tire smoke now, I am less awe struck. A performance version track-oriented dual motor Model 3 could be a force to reckon with.

Oh come on Bimmer, do something with the sound! Muscle cars don't sound like this! The M550i and of course the Mercedes-AMG E63 S sound worlds better (the former does it for much less money - 34k in fact!)! Please proceed to the new 4.0 V8 of the M8 that's under development - that engine sounds great! But I have to say it sounds nice inside! Has it got intake tubes, maybe? As far as looks go, I like the looks inside and out and, also, nice engine cover! The M stripes look ace! Edit: Why do they call it the ''F''90? We're in the ''G'' generation now!

Tell you what 60 in this is 3.2 sec from BMW , and top speed 190 and e63 is 189 mph just answered your question , but you never know what the e63 would do after 90mph

I wonder if people ever stop to think if they actually need this much power. The answer is simply no because not everyone has access to the Autobahn, let alone possess the driving skills on track. You will never win the numbers game simply because there's always something faster around the corner.

Thomas, okay M5 or E63 S? I am leaning to the new M5 to replace my current M5 as I like it very much and had horrible luck with the S500 4Matic I had. I also like the M5 can out 100% torque to front or rear and my understanding is the MB can only send 50% to the front.

Wait for the aftermarket exhaust supplies - s62 sounds very mean with tuned exhaust, just listen to this and you'll see what I'm talking about: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mXOklZttlpqoZs0 Personally (with tuned exhaust ofc) I like the way it sounds more than any other turbo charged v8 , because it definitely sounds unique, a bit high pitched and totally different unlike others who sound like a muscle cars with a lot of growling (almost the same)

If this is 600 HP and the E63S 612 HP I know there will be a competition package bumping it up to 625 HP or more plus Dinan will get it up to at least 750 HP with a programming upgrade.

Hello Thomas... Thank you for the review on the M5 it seems to be generating a great deal of interest. I feel it’s showing signs of ageing in the body shape as I owned a BMW320D back in 2014 that has the same shape. I also know that a true comparison of performance is not HP to weight ratio but Torque to Weight ratio after all torque is what talks with the kick in the back acceleration. What do you think? Very comprehensive review as usual. I would love to buy a RS6 Audi but they need to make a Sedan. Best wishes. Gary - Australia

Very thorough and intelligent review as usual... I wonder, which is most fun on the road? M5, M3 or M2? This car is very big and almost too powerful to stretch on a country road! Maybe Thomas is right, sometimes less is more. in the UK 600hp will get you a prison sentence if you use all of it on the road! I would fear for my license if I was driving this car lol

Mercedes E63s ,AUDI R7,HAVE better cars now than this.Design outdated ,interior also. Only the engine is great.I think BMW has lost the game to Mercedes AMG and AUDI R/S cars.Only good BMW Left is M760LI .Anyway,still great review Thomas,keep it up!!!!!!

Yes really conservative design. If you don't know detail you can't understand this is M5 or not. In my country Türkiye there are many BMW M5 but only exterior M5. Engine 1.6 or 2.0....

Comment about the "ethical issue of using natural leather". The cows will die best to make use of everything. I will wait on the midlife refresh to replace my F10 M5 w/Comp Pkg.; seems the mid life is the sweet spot of the manufacturer has all the bugs of the original design corrected.

We have researched this issue for many years now so please take your time to go through our extensive resources stated below as they answer every single question we have yet received concerning this matter. We believe that sustainable luxury is possible or at least we should do everything to support that. Those many thousand people confirming this trend, motivate us to give you the most authentic information and background on the product parts. It is not about what you bought in the past, and it is not about blaming anyone, it is about what you decide in the future and what you can decide and influence as a customer. So we want you to have all information that you need for a decision you later enjoy and like best yourself. In Summer 2017, Tesla motors has decided to be the first manufacturer to go all the way with sustainable seat materials, only offering fabric/cloth seats or leatherette seats in different colours. They have banned all real leather from the seating surface and at the steering wheel in the white trim or on demand. So Tesla shows where the industry will and must be heading, just like they went forward with electrification first. Check out our special video addressing car CEOs as a first summary and also see conditions of animal skin production: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gn-2hq2Qjd-jmsU List of practical reasons against animal skin seats: 1. animal skin seats are often sold as an expensive option, by going for base trim level seats you can save a lot of money and get a better price-performance-deal (often the manufacturers claim that animal leather is top of luxury because they can earn the best money with it) 2. animal skin seats get hot in summer and you stick to the seat, probably you need seat cooling 3. they get very cold in winter and you need seat heating 4. on cloth or microfibre surfaces, you basically don’t need seat heating nor cooling 5. animal skin seats wear out very fast and look like an old sofa 6. if you want leather look or need seats that can be wiped clean easier, the leatherette (faux leather) surfaces are meanwhile highly evolved and it is possible that it feels even softer and better than anything else (See our Tesla Model X review kzbin.info/www/bejne/r2Paf3p8gMZng5I) So Tesla shows a good example for that and as described, non-leather materials are now standard for ALL Tesla 7. More manufacturer names for their good alternatives: Mercedes MBTex/Artico for leatherette, Dinamica for microfibre. BMW Sensatec, Toyota Sof-Tex, Lexus Nu-Luxe (all faux leather) To the environmental reasons: 1. The way the cows and other intelligent and social animals are raised and held are not according to the basic values that we all share (also see videos below) 2. The factory farming industry can be accounted for at least 40 % of climate emissions and thus is (according to numerous sources you can look up) the number one reason for climate change and environmental destruction. It is the number one reason for deforestation, two thirds of all agricultural land on earth is used for growing animal food crops. If you would feed humans directly by using the agricultural land, you could produce much more food for everyone. It is not only cows who are suffering, but also the environment and to a big part also humans. Think of slavery-like working conditions in slaughterhouses (there are plenty of documentaries about this) or think of chemically altered drinking water in animal skin production villages as also seen in the video footage. 4. The discussion, for which body part the cow is killed first, is very patronizing. But if you really think it would be important why someone gets killed in first place: There are many productions where the cow is killed for the skin first, sometimes even while still being (part-)alive, the skin is the most profitable single part of the body. 5. So even if a cow gets theoretically killed for meat first, in every case you give additional money to an industry that relies on killing, pollutes the environment and harms people with chemicals. Let's say you are standing at the meat counter. And you ask for the leg of the cow. The butcher tells you: "You can eat that without worrying, the cow was slaughtered for the neck first". The next customer demands the neck. The butcher tells him: "It's not your fault, the cow was slaughtered for the belly". A the next customer demands the hide, what answer does he get? You see, that argument of "byproduct" comes from the meat and leather industry to cover up that you contribute to killing no matter which part of the body you buy. 6. To the often said argument, animal skin would just be a byproduct, please google/youtube "leather is not a byproduct" you will find plenty of information. A good overview on all those issues can also be found here: adaptt.org/ To “But leatherette is not sustainable due to petrochemical production” 1. Indeed some fabrics and micro fibres are oil based, however most oil is spent on energy production, heating and fuel. The share of oil used for artificial cloth etc. is very very small. 2. If you look at the whole production process, the leatherette is way more sustainable than the leather produce. Even if you leave the ethical aspect aside, here is the official calculation of the CO2-Output animal skin vs leatherette (different kinds of leatherette): Leather 17 kg CO2/m² PVC leatherette 10 kg CO2/m² Acella Eco natural leatherette 8,5 kg CO2/m² Benova (PUR leatherette): 8 kg CO2/m² So by using the latest high-tech leatherette, you even the CO2-emissions are cut in half! 3. The best to-come solution are indeed plant-based materials like Pinatex (based on pineapple leaves) or new materials based on mycelia (roots of mushrooms) or other innovative natural products. I partly know the creators of the video footage personally and they are all authentic. You don’t have to search long to find cruel production environments anyway. Manufacturers reactions: We started the very first inquiry years ago, with the result that car manufacturers do not reveal their sources of animal skin AT ALL. If it all would be clean and happening without harm, why don’t they show it to us whereas they are showing us every other detail of their products? They have good reason not to, because there is no such thing as a clean animal skin production without harming cows, humans and the environment. The only thing a manufacturer can do is increase their effort for a better future, and we are helping with in-depth talks and interviews by presenting the increasing customer demand for sustainable luxury. Tesla was the first one to react in a major way now. So meanwhile, we more often also get feedback that a lot of manufacturers are working on leather-free interiors and are aware of the situation. E.g. Bentley, Mini and Kia have started vegan car interior programmes. Besides Tesla, Mercedes already shows major choices for sustainable interiors, you always have to pay attention to the details when ordering, of course - and we are happy to give advice.
